Susan, I greatly appreciate this video, but applying acrylic (a water-based medium) over oil paint (an oil based medium) is not archival and the acrylic layer may crack or flake off over time. It would be better to use a thin wash of oil over the clear gesso and then use the pastels. I primarily use oils and just wanted to warn you about the potential issues of applying acrylic over oil. I love the idea of an oil based underpainting though.

Oh, thanks so much for that useful info. I have not used oil paints very often, especially combining them. I'll have to make mention of that in my next video where I describe this process. I'm thinking I'll do the same technique using acrylic paints. And perhaps try your suggestion of applying the oil wash over the clear gesso. Thanks again.... very helpful comment.

Just wanted to add some info for anyone interested in oils. Golden’s site has some guidance about when one could possibly use oils and acrylics together. As another person noted, acrylics cannot be applied over oils because they will ultimately peel off. I’m not sure how that would be different with an oil wash because, as i understand it, the acrylics won’t adhere to oils. I think a better option for texture would be using cold wax with oils and applying them with a speedball roller and palette knife. Also, the cold wax speeds the drying of the paint, which would be done in a couple days. In the meantime, one can work on something else. I usually have several going at once, so that there’s always something that’s dry. The dry time is also valuable because it allows you time to study or observe what you’ve done, which invariably informs whatever is done next.
Also, walnut oil is the slowest drying oil of the oils used. Linseed oil dries faster. Lavender Spike Oil (which is lavender oil) was used by the masters through today. It speeds drying, thins paint, and is a substitute for turpentine (it can be used to clean brushes). Invaluable information and products (including spike oil, which is use) can be found on naturalpigments.com (i have absolutely no association with the site beyond loving their products and the abundance of information they post about all mediums).
I would also note for beginners that it’s important to ensure the oils are applied to a primed surface so it will bind. It’s also best to use separate brushes for oils and acrylics.
Thank you for your videos. I’m enjoying them very much as i learn more about acrylics.

is always oil over acrylics, so you can do the underpainting in acrylics very well and pastels over this with no clear gesso needed, Pastels if they are soft you have to fix before further painting but oil pastels are ok.and if you wish to glaze in oil or paint in oil over is perfectly fine, but acrylics over oil will not stick together.

Unfortunately using acrylic bases over oil will cause problems in the long term. Oil overall tends to break down plastics over time, but more immediate than that you will almost certainly get cracking and delaminating occurring between the layers.
I've used pastels and oil together but avoided using them in the same area, the pastels are matte and reflect a lot of beautiful full colour around, and the oils have a glossy surface which can make a very neat combination. If you go over the pastel with an oil brush it will immediately transform the pastel into essentially oil paint, also if you do the opposite. You can wait for the oil layer to harden and go over it. I haven't tried but you could also go over with an oil glaze and maybe add some grit to it, and also haven''t tried to use oil pastels with it, but it seems like it would be an obvious combo to try.
Love your videos, thank you for sharing them with us.

I have switched to Watercolor and Oil painting since being here before. M.Graham does make an Alkyd Walnut Oil that dries even faster. I am currently only using M.Graham products since they are a great company. Be careful everyone, that if you use rags to clean up walnut oil and/or the paints to let the rags sit out, laying flat, for a week so that the rags dry out and do "not" combust. Safety first!

To protect my final painting for shipping or storing, I place them in a clear plastic bag I get from www.clearbags.com/bags/flat/flap-tape/crystal-clear. I buy the bags a bit larger than standard sizes so I will have room for the painting and a piece of foamcore board cut to the size of the painting. So you're using the oil as a thin underpainting? Interesting. I love your energy and sharings.
Following the rule of "fat on lean" .. I'd be a bit concerned about putting the gesso over the oil. I'm sure the pastel particles will move with the oil (as it never dries but just hardens). Perhaps a thin layer of something like damar varnish mixed with pumice or marble dust over the oil .. would add just enough texture to help hold the pastel. Further experience or thoughts? One safe easy way to mix oils and pastels is to mix the powder from pan pastels with Linseed or walnut oil. Kind of brewing up your own oil paints. Or If you can follow an old bob ross video and instead of laying down the magic white or liquid clear over your gesso'd canvas, Spread your walnut oil over your toothy pastel paper. Take a white paper towel and thouroughly wipe as much oil off as you can. Next apply your pan pastel or even crushed up pastels with rigid make up brushes on to your lightly oiled paper. In addition, you can use pastel pencils, oil paints, or even powdered charcoal. Or, . . . You can also lay down your pastels first, cover with clear gesso or acrylic paint and paint directly with your oil paints on top. You can even put paint thinner and oil paints in an airbrush for gorgeous results!

I believe the fat over lean principle is for wet mediums because of the drying times (oil taking longer to dry than acrylic). Soft pastels are dry and I also never use a thick application of oil with this technique. I’ve never had any issues with any of my paintings using this technique.
