- Sasuke Uchiha is one of the most important characters in Naruto. He awakens the Rinnegan in the Naruto Shippuden War Arc, but his strongest and most important Rinnegan abity is hot garbage. In fact, it's the most poorly written jutsu in Naruto.
Amenotejikara is an inconsistent jutsu that half of the time functions as a glorified substitution jutsu, and is completely broken the other half. Sasuke vs Naruto, Sasuke and Naruto vs Madara, Sasuke and Naruto vs Kaguya, these are the main fights Sasuke uses Amenotejikara, and the manga doesn't make a good job with the jutsu.
Even in Naruto vs Sasuke, which is a fight everyone like, the jutsu wasn't written very well.

I would've said Chibaku Tensei but after being reminded of Limbo it has to be that. Hard counter to Limbo has to be given by God

Limbo is a physical clone without chakra but we also saw that there were affected by naruto six paths rods when madara with one rennegan fought naruto and sasuke
So in the end there are naruto six paths shadow clones level
I mean even if these clones can use the perfect susanoo naruto did almost the same he performed the kurama six paths mode shadow clones against sasuke during the last fight
This is off topic but how does the Uchiha even have large chakra pools? Kakashi supposed to have large chakra pool but his sharingan is taxing, I guess. So is the sharingan taxing on chakra as a whole or just to Kakashi? Danzo had like 50 sharingan attached to him so does that mean he had an extremely large amount of chakra to bear them all or is it just a problem for Kakashi? It's not consistent a Ross the board, let alone Sasuke bearing both a sharingan which is his own but that rinnegan isn't. 🙄
90% of sasuke's abilities become op if he was just smart. For example : amenotijikara makes amatarasu unavoidable and instant, he can use amatarasu on a random object and then swap it for the target's clothes.

He is smart, it's just that he's not the main character, Boruto or Naruto is. Because he's not the main character, he won't be able to kill the enemies that are meant for Naruto or Boruto to defeat.

@@kijanajenkins2546 the thing is Vegeta, while strong, often overestimates his abilities or let his arrogance and pride get in the way of achieving any meaningful victory. He doesnt win because of his character flaws. Sasuke is a strong character as well, but hes also shown to be smart and lack the character flaws Vegeta has.

This is not just a problem with that ability, this is a problem with kishimoto's writing of his core magic system. It's insanely convoluted and contradictory, and it's kishimoto's own fault and it goes beyond this one hideous example.

There is no bigger example than the gentle fist tbh, it is very broken, the mechanics change quite rapidly as fast as part 1 and really the fandom completely overlooks how broken the Hyuga was until Boruto. But a lot of the e rank jutsu being broken, the ability to mold chakra into a ball and launching it at an opponent is preferable to attacks like the chidori or the three lightning fingers, etc.

I love the comparison of Kakashi substituting Naruto with himself in the bell test and Sasuke moving Madara into his attack. Little did we know, Kakashi in the bell test is one of the most powerful characters in the series.
Substitution relies on speed, so if the enemy is faster than the user then the the substitution is useless.
Amenotejikara is instant.

if you look at the way substitution jutsu works, it’s actually supposed to be the user using chakra to amp their speed (like body flicker) so they can grab something in the nearby area and replace their body with it. It’s stupid asf but the justification for kakashi doing it to Naruto is that Naruto is too slow to be able to comprehend that he was essentially picked up by kakashi and brought to the attack at super fast speed. This could only be done because Naruto was so weak in comparison to kakashi. Sasuke’s jutsu literally Switches the targets in space by warping their locations so it’s a different mechanism all together, and is able to be done to anyone

the base technique itself hasnt been properly explained either so while it is pretty much a high speed movement technique its also entirely possible that it might just work like a set of preprogramed actions that is imputed before its execution using hand signs else ninjas using the body flickering technique would be able to whatever during the high speed movement so it probably soemthing that works similar to negi’s raiten taisō’s mobility in negima where he sets a coordinates and turns himself into lightning to move himself to the designated location resembling a teleportation of sorts but cannot change direction or is even conscious during the movement itself so the substitution jutsu being a derivative of the body flickering jutsu would probably work similarity cept with additional instruction and the ninjas probably arent even able to do anything during the action too since their body would be moving too fast for them to comprehend

Not here to act like a Sasuke fanboy, just stating the truth. The Rinnegan is a narrative mess that is undefeatable in a mechanical sense. Amaterasu is even worse, it's this verse most broken ability, even more than Kamui, but the only way to not make it an op instawin button is to make it completely useless. This dude can fulminate people with hellfire by looking at them, and even before the Sage boost or even the eternal MS, his normal mangekyo could fulminate BIJUUS by looking at them. I want you to grasp how terryfing this is. Its just too cool to be useful in any sense and it becomes a way to clean fodder.

I think the real issue is how under valued the substitution jutsu is. Being able to change your position is extremely valuable, and making sure the most vulnerable learn should be a priority. Being taught at entry level doesn't mean it's weak, but that Konoha deemed it essential that children learn to avoid taking damage before the most hype and flashy jutsu like a water dragon.
Tbh i love how Dygo completly took out the susbstitution jutsu in his rewrite because of those exact reasons, it's absolutly broken and extremely easy to use.
Kishimoto's foresight was absolutely atrocious making both the Body Flicker and Substitution Jutsus and because of that he makes characters look like idiots for conveniently forgetting they can just use Substitution and Body Flicker in any given situation and save themselves. Just. Like. That.

Kakashi could've caught up to Naruto and Sasuke in a heartbeat had he used the Body Flicker Jutsu.
Also, there's really no reason why anyone wouldn't use Substitution Jutsu whenever Amaterasu is fired. No reason. Kishimoto realized himself how broken these two techinques were, hence why he never mentioned the two in part 2.
Heck, Rin, Kakashi and Obito all could've sped out of that death trap that "killed" Obito had they body flickered away, too.

There are a few things that I agree with how inconsistent the jutsu is but I actually think it's mechanically stronger than substitution, it's implied that substtion requires the opponent to be not too fast to be used or effective, while Amenotejikara is theoretically able to switch an enemy with a small rock or anything, the problem is for some reason sasuke becomes insanely dumb when he could have used this broken ability like an actual broken ability
It also allows him to teleport things without switching. He did this to Kaguya. But in Boruto they nerfed it

He also used twice in his fight aganist naruto(before hits a chidori in his back and before use kirin in sussano). We could also imagine he was swaping air particules with madara, kaguya or himself. Once he has sharingan he should be able to see them(just like in the fight with deidara) and then swap it.
Substitution requiring the opponent to be slower was never stated. It's a nice headcanon, but Kishimoto never bothered to make anyone say it. Moreover Sakura spammed substitution against the Sound genins and they couldn't stop her. Even though the Sound genins should be faster.
All his abilities are broken that's why the Boruto writers used bad plot to take way his Rinnegan 😂
Amenotejikara is basically an instant kill on anyone who can't tank a chidori+amaterasu to the head... so basically everyone.
Problem is, Sasuke always use it in the most idiotic ways possible. His first move in every fight should be teleporting the enemy right in front of his best attack.
Its not an awful jutsu. If Sasuke just invented it by himself I would think it was cool and shows that hes a genius for inventing like 3 jutsu by himself, but its his personal RINNEGAN ABILITY. Hagaromo had Creation, Madara had Limbo, and Sasuke basically has a Overwatch ability like what the hell

The creation was a Yin-Yang ninjutsu, it wasn’t Hagoromo’s Rinnegan ability.

I think this just shows that Kishimoto knows how broken the substitution jutsu is lol.
People underplay this ability though. I mean, yes it's a glorified substitution. But, you can also substitute the enemy in a position where you can attack them off guard, without their consent, which a normal substitution cannot do. Sasuke just spawned Madara in his and Naruto's attack. It's basically an altered version of flying raijin. Not nearly as good as a rinnegan awakening ability should be, but also not nearly as shitty as some people make it out to be.
the thing is that substitution itself could have been used to swap people with other people, as shown in the bell training that team 7 did where kakashi used kawarimi with one of naruto’s clones. i agree that it’s a strong ability, but given that there’s a basic jutsu that can basically do a similar thing makes it a bit underwhelming.

It's not just a switching ability, it also allows Sasuke to teleport or teleport others without needing to switch anything.
He did this in the Kaguya arc, Boruto seems to have nerfed the ability so it only swaps things instead.

Also the fact that substitutes only seem to work against lower level Shinobi or when there is a large level in skill between the caster and the attacker, otherwise people would have spammed that shit in the war. How was it nerfed? He instantly teleported Momoshiki in chains for example, and the jutsu does not seem like it can be stopped.
Kishimoto has this tendency of coming up with all this “one shot” type of abilities, like Amaterasu and then for plot reasons he is OBLIGATED to either nerf them or make them work in different ways than the ones that would be the most effective😂 he’s a good author, but there are so many things forced in the plot and it’s understandable, I guess, when your goal is to create these powerful character with all sorta of abilities😅😂
Amaterasu ain't a good example here. It was stated to only go out when it burned it's target to ash. The target being what it touches. So no Amaterasu always worked the same and never changed. In Naruto's case he just used his Kurema chakra to substitute the flames for it instead of himself.

If a jutsu burns hot enough to melt through a fire breathing toad's insides in under a second, then it should be hot enough to kill a human instantly. When Sasuke gets hit with it by Itachi, he has enough time to drop to the ground, weave multiple handsigns, and then slip into the building before it burns through him. Last I checked, Sasuke's skin isn't fireproof. So he should burn way faster than the fire toad's stomach.

Sasuke and orochimaru not getting sage mode was a mess. I mean we could have had kishi say the curse mark was the starting steps to sage mode for snakes and Kabuto mastered it that way while orochimaru could use it but his arms kept him from activating it until the last war. So many wasted potential

@@aceclover758 logically, it's correct that Sasuke have that much chakra since he inherited the eyes and chakra of the sage while Naruto only inherited the body of the sage, Naruto has the body to hold the power of the Tailed Beasts but Sasuke must also have the body to hold the power he has within himself too, otherwise he'd collapse under the pressure of the energy contains and he outputs. That's Newtons 3rd Law at work for you. How he got that much power? Well, in the 3 year time skip training under Orochimaru he got so powerful that he can suppress Kurama's chakra without the MS too, later on, Obito explains that the source of Sasuke power is Hatred. He's like the Hulk in a sense; the madder he gets, the stronger he gets. But instead of anger, hatred is his power source. Evident in his Susano'o.
How Sasuke vs Naruto should have gone:
Step 1: Sasuke uses Chidori stream
Step 2: Sasuke uses Amenotejikara to bring Naruto inside the Chidori stream
Step 3: Fight is over
Version 2:
Sasuke lifts his sword forward->Sasuke use amenotejikara to teleport the sword inside Naruto's head -> Fight is over
This is how Rinnegan Sasuke could have defeated or come close to defeating every single opponent. Use Ameno to bring every opponent into the strongest possible effective attack and instantly bonk them.
This is why I always said Sasuke should have been a Seinen protagonist. Because if he was he wouldn't get nerfed into the ground & there wouldn't be an unnecessary sequel (Bort).
You say it yourself: the only time we see people use substitution like that is with kakashi during the bell test. We even see the panel explaining it, they have to actually go touch the thing they are using for the substitution. The only reason Kakashi was able to use Naruto's clone as a substitution was beacuse he was that much faster then him at that time.
Amenotejikara on the other hand is done instantaneously and independent of the users movements.

It's not that big of a deal but it fits Sasuke's fighting style, he was always about speed and rushing people, Tobi even says that his shunshin is faster than his and Deidara's. This is why i've always say that him losing his rinnegan wasn't that big of a deal, he just had to improve his shunshin and substitution jutsu and that's it, want to make it faster? Make him learn Hiraishin and there you go, he is back to his old rinnegan fighting ways, it would even probably make him stronger since he wouldn't have the chakra consumption of the rinnegan anymore.

Oda did something like this in One Piece with Law. Law can switch places with anything that is inside of the Room he creates. It has a visible range (the Room, which can be bigger while costing more stamina), and we always see what Law replaces himself with, which is usually a pebble he throws. His powers are quite broken so characters with stronger haki like Kaido or Big Mom can avoid being directly affected.

It allows him to switch 2 things with no limitations so even without switching people with things he could straight up split people apart switching their bodies away, he could even switch someone's BRAIN with a chidori. Sasuke's Rinnegan swap ability is a nerfed version of the Flying Raijin.
Minato and Tobirama were frequently shown to have the ability to swap with anything they tagged using the Flying Raijin Seal. They used this teleport swapping technique to land a powerful combo on Ten Tails Obito.
Sasuke's Rinnegan swap ability functions similarly, but he doesn't need to tag his enemies beforehand, which should make it better used in close range encounters. However, Sasuke's teleport jutsu has limited range compared to Minato and Tobirama, who seemingly have infinite range and can teleport without the need to swap with objects, plus Minato has mastered the Flying Raijin to require little to no chakra, so he can constantly spam it. Sasuke seems to consume more chakra as an adult when casting his teleport compared to his 17 year old self.
Sasuke often utilises his teleporting to confuse his enemies by swapping with his sword, but that's essentially a watered-down version of Minato's Flying Raijin kunai combo. Minato earned the moniker "The Yellow Flash" because of his signature move, where he would throw multiple tagged kunai at his foes and rapidly teleport between them, striking multiple times. People would only see a yellow blur in motion.
Minato accomplished all of this without the aid of the Rinnegan or any genetic enhancements; he was simply that formidable.
Tobirama is totally kicking back in the afterlife, sipping ghostly tea, and chuckling at the sight of Sasuke struggling with his teleporting. I mean, come on, Sasuke, can't even hold a candle to the legendary Flying Raijin! Poor Sasuke, his teleportation skills are about as impressive as a snail on a sugar rush. Tobirama must be having a ghostly blast up there, rolling on the fluffy clouds with laughter at the skills of "last Uchiha".
Then he'd most likely flip his lid if found out my OC(Sarada's twin brother) uses Flying Thundergod, and much better and much more versatility than he and Minato combined
Sasuke can also teleport without switching anything. He has shown that in the Kaguya fight.
Amenotejikara is better for close ranged battles since there is no need for a tag, and Sasuke can swap other objects with other things just as easily.
Minato and Tobirama need to apply tags and throw Kunai, whilst all Sasuke needs to do is use his eye and it's done. Both Minato and Tobirama were required to deal with Juubito, but if Sasuke had Amenotejikara he could have just done all their FTG attacks with much more efficiency and ease.
The only thing the FTG has over the Amenotejikara is range.

Not sure how it goes in the manga but at least in the anime. Kakashi using subs on Naruto is shown as him having to go and grab naruto first(with a clone if i remember correctly) and then use the subs. Implying that you would have to get hold of ur enemy first (with a clone) and then using the subs. Clone or not, it is implied that you have to speed blitz your opponent to pull that kind of move. Comparing kid naruto and adult kakashi at that point is like a comparison between a turtle and a bullet.

In the fight with juubidara Sasuke switched Juudara with one of his limbo clones after he had just swapped himself with to dodge the attack. While the ability and it's revealing are definitely very flawed it isn't as loosely defined as you make it out to be. He can either switch himself with any object or switch any 2 objects with similar mass. The rest of the flaws are all very true, and are mainly a result of kishimoto biting more than he's willing to chew so thus he chokes sometimes when writing fights with the obscene amounts of abilities with their own pros and cons.
It's quite baffling trying to think up an in-universe explanation for why Sasuke doesn't swap/teleport his opponents around more often.

It's never stated. More importantly, the mechanism isn't clear on how stronger people can resist substitution.
I am for the switching with air or dust or anything else... there are tons of stuff where we consider to be "empty space" and Sasuke could switch with visible and discrete objects most of the time for:
a) maybe is simpler/less stressful... But your example of the out of sight switched object turn this unlikely
b) to hide this possibility to the enemies, because if you can switch with something visible and achieve your result, after a couple of usage your enemies or simple the intel gathered around you may link this to a limitation in your jutsu. And in the end you are feeding false informations about your skills to the enemies to surprise them when you really needed.
Those are possible explaination but seeing how those kind of Jutsu are portraited in the story at all, problably it's just plot convenience and plot holes. In the end the jutsu IS a slight different substitution jutsu in a time when the base jutsu was deleted from the story because broken.
So, the author wrote the sostitution jutsu and then shadow deleted from the story because it is broken... to then re-introducte it in a slight different form as a "ultimate jutsu".
In the end Sasuke's ability and sostitution jutsu really don't coexist due to narrative diktats
My main problem with Sasuke and how Kishimoto wrote him overall is that, why would u give him so much shit, for him to never used it at all? And the times he used the jutsus he's supposed to use he doesn't do it in a intelligent way, and the inconsistencies like one time a jutsu it's godlike the 3rd time is completely useless even against weaker opponents

The jutsu's range depends on how far plot needs it to be. Madara escaped Sasuke's range easily when Sasuke tried to use it on him the second time.

Maybe ame no tajikara works like you can swap with anything, but you can only teleport to any place after you have done it once previously.

My problem with the Rinnegan is the random abilities.
The Sharingan and Byakugan have abilities that are believable for what an eye could do, before the timeskip anyway.
It seems the issue stems less from the core strength of Amenotejikara, and more from how little sense the base Substitution Jutsu makes, combined with Kishimoto not actually using Amenotejikara correctly and/or in interesting ways, instead allowing the technique to stagnate into a basic teleportation jutsu.
It's like Sasuske got flash from League of legends when everyone already got Blink Daggers from Dota 2.
Long comment just fyi broken into sections: 1) how Amenotejikara works and how it is different and better than the Substitution Jutsu, 2) why he didn't use it against Naruto, 3) the amount of time he used it in the Kaguya fight vs the Madara fight.
Amenotejikara is far better than the Substitution Jutsu. The Substitution Jutsu has you physically replace yourself with something and move out of the way, meaning you need to be fast enough to replace and escape and is used to either attack or flee vs Ameno that just swaps places with anything within a short to mid range distance, whether it be you swap places or two things that aren't you swap places (seen on screen at 6:14 where Sasuke swaps a Chidori and Kunai). Any instance where Sasuke seemingly just teleported himself or someone could just be swapping with something very small, like a rock. Ameno is short to mid range, so anything that looks long range to us could simply be mid range according to the jutsu. And yes, it can work on things behind the user as Sasuke does this in the CANON sequel of Boruto in both the manga and anime which is consistent with how in Naruto he casts a 360 degree genjutsu on the Bijuu. meaning his Rinnegan can work on things that are behind him. As for its cool down: what if it he only has so many uses before it needs to recharge, like a gun having limited shots before needing to reload.
Why didn't Sasuke use it against Naruto: as you even say he used it against Naruto to get behind him and after that, he goes straight into his Susanoo, Indra's Arrow causes his Rinnegan to not work for a few hours until he uses the Preta Path to steal Naruto's chakra but even then he can't even maintain his base sharingan as it deactivates as he tries to kill Naruto. He uses Amterasu and Kagetsuchi, maybe they just require less chakra then Ameno does. Also, you can just say the Asura Avatar is out of his range or that he wanted to kill Naruto so he charged Indra's Arrow, which again made his Rinnegan unusable for some time.
Sasuke used it more times against Kaguya than Madara at 4 to 3 uses. Madara: dodge the lightning, swap with the sword, teleports Madara to him and Naruto, 3 times. Kaguya: teleports to Naruto after Kaguay destroys his Susanoo and he is falling into the lava, he actually does teleports Kaguya to him and Naruto with the intent of sealing her but she summons her ice dimension to freeze them all, he does use it in the gravity dimension after he says his Rinnegan needs to recharge as once it does he teleports to Kaguya to stab her but she dimension hops again, and finally he swaps with a clone to seal Kaguya, 4 times. That is not including when he uses it to swap with Sakura's jacket and the anime scene DgyoKnight brought up of him switching with his Susanoo Arrow for a total of 6 times.

I think it'd be better if he could just teleport something outright, but at the cost of double the cooldown, while using a *physical object* reduces it and makes it easier or something.

I think a key element is speed. Substitution jutsu is a lower level speed and that doesn't work on higher level fights. And when you see Sasuke teleporting without switching with an object you have to grant that he does but you don't see the object.
You guys analyze everything in detail but you need to grant some suspension of disbelief.
I don't know if this was ever brought up, but another issue with Amenotejikara is that it is supposed to be SO OP and broken, that all other average Rinnegan abilities pale in comparison.... Sasuke only ever uses Banshō Tein and Chakra absorption in the battle of the Final Valley with Naruto. Can you imagine what Sasuke, the most powerful and unique user, how much the common Rinnegan techniques could achieve? Maybe all the other ones would have more abilities or power. Maybe the summoning path of the Rinnegan could summon legendary beasts, or he could manipulate life and death like Nagato could....but no. The plot says amenotejikara is so OP is all that Sasuke needs ....

Sasuke is an Uchiha (they have potent chakra & more than normal humans), he's Indra's transmigrant, his chakra was growing throughout Part 2, he got Hashirama cells from Kabuto in the war & Sasuke fused with half of Hagoromo chakra. At least the novel & video game Sasuke isn't nerfed.

i feel like the sub jutsu really got casted aside. Tbh its perfect. it fits with the ninja theme and the world of Naruto, and it was interesting seeing it be explained by Kakashi in the anime for the first time, sucks it kinda got faded out overtime because it is a pretty good idea for a technique. I didnt realize Sasuke's move was this jank in terms of consistency. Chakra has always been confusing to me as a power system and this just makes it even worse

It can also teleport you for short distances without switching you with a object or a person and the same Sasuke can do it with another person or object(as long it's in the range of amenotejikara). I remember the times when the rinnegan was first introduced, we thought it was an uzumaki dojutsu because at the time the rinnegan was shown to utilize pure chakra as a weapon and was shown that an uzumaki (nagato) awakened it after a traumatic event, which makes sense as chakra stuff are an uzumaki thing. 3 arcs later it was retconned.
Fun times, we could’ve gotten a more interesting story out of it instead of the story being a sell out to the fans.

I think it feels so weak when it's compared with the other abilities we have
like Limbo even if we assumed that the person who had it was average just due to it's nature where you need six paths sage mode/abilities to even sense/see it and even then it's hard to interact with as it seems to be able to pick and choose what to interact with EX: Sasuke's sword and Sakura's punch
And the other (which is only fan thought of) is creation of anything as long as you have the chakra for it and without the knowledge of the conversation it may be a "situational" ability and is less of a combat ability so I could see it being weaker on paper
And the ability has many weaknesses aside from the cooldown which is chakra cost since even adult Sasuke can't use it that often and jokes aside he should be much better with the ability and have a greater chakra pools. But I do want to say the exchange part of the ability is probably the weaker part of it as it can open portals to another dimension is far stronger IMO since as Kaguya showed just sending someone to another dimension it a pretty easy way to get rid of someone who can't do it on command
Substitution is limited by your speed and generally requires prep time if you're not fighting people like tiers below you

I don't know if this happened in the manga too, but in the anime sasuke teleport kaguya between him and naruto. This was after naruto used the reverse harem jutsu and was exactly the same he did to madara previously, he didn't switch her with something, he just teleported her.

In Jujutsu Kaizen they did it very good with Todou's sorcery skill to switch places with someone or swap other people when he claps his hands. But it's needed that he claps his hands and he can spam the shit out of that. But then the twist comes when he tricks the enemy into thinking that there will be a swap when he claps his hands but there Is nothing. Because he conditioned his enemy to expect something to change upon hearing Todou clapping his hands. But he explains how it works which on that series. A sorcerer explaining their technique makes the technique more powerfull which helps to make the explanation to the viewer. And there as far as i remember, we see him switching places with other people or making others switch places between them or objects. Never like you mentioned here ln the video, switching with nothing/air.
I feel like this jutsu is basically how subsitution is SUPOSSED TO WORK (with some limits) and the fact that its insanely high tier doesnt make it bad functionally but its shit from a power scale stand point

Honestly I look at it more akin tovthe Ope-Ope no Mi/ Law's Devil Fruit, that gives Sasuke perfect control of any object's positiin within a certain area of distance.
The reason he can swap himself with anything is because it's easier to do and consume less chakra, and the reason he uses it like the Substitution Jutsu is because, said jutsu became kind of irrelevant as the series went on and it was because he is familiar with the jutsu.
But overall, it is a stronger variation of the Substitution Jutsu but probably has much more potential. Imagine Sasuke replacing someone's heart with a rock, effectively killing them, or something like swapping someone's soul with another, like an Edo Tensei switching places with a livong person, thus being free from the control in another body and leaving the original person within the Edo Tensei.
