Iowa Derecho: Witness the power of Mother Nature

  • UPDATE: Wind Speeds have been updated to 140mph in my town!
    #derecho #iowaderecho #inlandhurricaine #derecho2020 #naturaldisaster
A derecho, from Spanish for "straight" is a widespread, long-lived, straight-line wind storm that is associated with a fast-moving group of severe thunderstorms known as a mesoscale convective system.
Derechos can cause hurricane-force winds, tornadoes, heavy rains, and flash floods. Derechos move rapidly in the direction of movement of their associated storms, with winds that may exceed hurricane-force.
When a derecho came through Iowa on a collision course with the town I live in, I couldn't just stand by and watch it destroy my house, I had to look it in the eye and film it.
I don't recommend putting yourself in the path of 100mph winds but somehow filming the storm as it roared through allowed me to see it through my camera's lens and lessened the impact if I had watched it all unfold with my own eyes.

It was certainly something I never want to experience again that’s for sure!
Spent 11 days without power and it took over a month to get internet back.
Driving through town this morning there are still homes with blue tarps on their roofs because there was so much damage in the city there’s not enough crews to get everything repaired.
Hopefully by end of summer most people will have their homes repaired

Oh, goodness. Just learning how to make nature photos/video (in Thailand), but your video strikes at one's heart, as I watch my hometown being destroyed from afar. My mom posted some other good (awful!) footage too. It's hard to watch the lands, the trees, the beauty of such a lovely land be swept away in the ferocious winds. If only it had last only 15 minutes, rather than nearly an hour. Watching and grieving from afar is all that I can do. Blessing on all the Iowans watching this. Glad you are safe. Everything was spur of the moment since I had no idea of the magnitude of the storm.
We were without power for 11 days.
Luckily I had a generator and that kept critical things going.
Everyone that had generators in the neighborhood ran drop cords to the people next to us so we could keep their refrigerators going.
Every morning I’d drive to a town that had power and fill up with gas to keep the generator going.
Eleven days without power wasn’t easy but pulling a tub of ice cream out of the freezer made it not so bad.😀
I’ve never worried about storms before but now when I see a report of a storm with strong winds, my heart beats a little faster now.

It's rather humorous to me, but as I watched the video, I actually thought, what a clever musical choice. Then I see how much controversy there was using music instead of the actual storm sounds. I can see both sides. But the almost somber, quiet, celestial-sounding music juxtaposed with the power and destruction of the storm seems almost poetic.
There are plenty of videos of this storm event with just the sounds of the storm. Nothing wrong with that. However, I praise you for being unique and taking a chance on something different.
One other option would have been to include the actual storm sounds and then using the music during the post-storm video showing the actual destruction. Sets a mood.

    • @NaturePhotoStudios

The people that like the music far outweigh those that don’t.
Thankfully everyone has different tastes or the world would be pretty boring.
I edit for myself and how I like to see my videos.
So many people edit for what they think will get the most likes or comments but then down the road they usually post a video about how they are going back to doing it the way that makes them happy.
I’m just putting my work out there and if people love it, that makes me happy. If they don’t, I’m perfectly ok with that.
I do chuckle how brave some people can be behind the keyboard but if it makes them feel better about themselves then I’m ok with that too.

Nature Photo Studios who are the fifty mutants who gave you a thumbs down? The vid was great. As I said, only wish it was longer. I wanted to see more of the storm in action. Not trying to be morbid or root for destruction... just understand that these events are rare. Derechos are not common. Catching them on video is spectacular. And your production value was excellent. You are also well spoken. As an English teacher (yes, I’m a scientist who is now an English teacher, LOL) words can’t describe how I feel about the level of stupidity in our society. To watch someone intelligent and well spoken is such a relief... merge that with good content and production? And... wow! One of the best vids I’ve seen to capture this derecho. The only reason it may not be THE best is, as I said, there’s not enough footage of the phenomenon in action. Anyway, despite my desire to see more, this was a great video. Well done... in all aspects. The scientist in me loved it (albeit leaving me wanting more); the English teacher in me loved it (such a relief seeing someone intelligent and well spoken here on CZcams). Add to that the good production. Very well done!

I agree that it would have been great to capture more of the storm. I think once the tree fell in the house my focus shifted to two of our cats that love to hang out in that room.
The ceiling was down, rain was pouring in and the floor was covered with at least a foot of blown in insulation.
I was frantically digging through the debris looking for them.
Luckily they were under the bed in the next bedroom down the hall.
They must have sensed the storm coming and dove for cover.
I had no ideas what was coming or believe me, I would have prepped for it and shot a lot more footage!
If I remember correctly, only five or six derechos have been recorded in this area.
So while the changes are slim that another one comes through, I’ll be ready for it. Course I’m perfectly fine if I’m never in another one!😀
Don’t know how I’ll follow up this video since my goal is to help people take better photographs so I’m sure I’ll lose a lot of new subscribers.

I don't think anyone was killed but the amount of damage was unreal.
There are still people looking for contractors that can fix their homes because insurance sometimes didn't cover everything so they're just getting around now to having the money to get it fixed on their own.
We were without electricity of 11 days which was very lucky for us since some people didn't have power for over a month.
We ran extension cords to our neighbors homes since we had a generator to keep their refrigerators going so they didn't lose everything like so many did,

Some people really appreciate the audio, because they can't see the video and really need to hear what it's like. I'm sure you do a great job capturing the raw power of nature through your lenses, but when you leave out the audio, you lose a lot of the power of nature, and for some, it's that sound. I can really testify to that, because I've lived through two tornadoes. What I've never experienced is what people see in certain tornadoes that makes them so beautiful when they're not destroying things. We own a 275 acre woods and lost several hundred trees larger than what you’re showing blown over. Now for many years the damage to trees is going to continue to drop whole trees already weakened. Disease will enter these cracks in them and cause disease and further falling and drop damage. If the wind blows you’ll hide. And I’m betting that you and your neighborhood won’t change and will all try to go on as you were with your old home repaired. 140mph winds don’t sound like a storm, it’s just noise.
If you were irritated by the music you’d be even more so by the recorded audio.
I had to mute it to even play the clips.

Nothing shows a storms fury better that at a marina.

Shows how powerful the winds were to take that tree over like it was nothing.
      Never seen anything like it

A category four hurricane has winds from 130 to 156

      Yep.
Winds were 140mph in my town.
When I made the video the only info I had on the winds were much less.
Once they did a damage assessment they determined that winds were 140mph which pits them squarely in Category 4 territory

Great video, looks like any neighborhood around the twin cities. Sadly story underreported, no national news reporters broadcasting asking for donations. Guess if it doesn't happen on either coast or a handful of major cities it doesn't happen. I do the same thing when I hear sirens, run outside to see what's happening. Hopes to the people of Iowa and you are getting the help you need.

The entire 75 square miles of Cedar Rapids sustained some kind of damage.
Some counties just got individual FEMA relief yesterday three weeks after the storm.
      Other counties are still waiting.
We had estimated 140mph winds so not too far from Laura’s wind speeds but we were just a footnote on the news. Took several days to even get a mention on national news.
Guess Iowa isn’t that news worthy unless it’s about the caucus

      Thank you!
Still can’t believe it happened and I was out there filming it all!
Had a scare that another storm was coming today but it split in half and went around us!
      Dodged that bullet at least!
