  • Exploring the Thornton Quarry in Chicago, Illinois, with DJI Mini 2 and added history.
The Thornton Quarry is a fascinating place that millions of people drive over but rarely get to see. I always wanted to see inside but getting on a tour is very difficult so I flew my drone over it and found out some really interesting information when I put the video together.
This video is a remake of one of my popular but early videos and I think the sound has been improved. It also has new historical information and is a bit shorter.
Join me as we take a short flight over the giant hole in the ground just outside of Chicago.

Haha! We already have nice beaches and Lake Michigan in Chicago! But they do use them for what you said; storm water management. The millions of gallons go here, among other places, from streets' storm drains, get stored, treated and released when the storm is over. It's a really good use for the unused parts of the quarry.

I found your quarry video. Totally different substances mined, of course. This one would probably have shut down on the first day if they tried to get chalk out it. I have another quarry video where they ran out of room and began mining under the neighborhood houses. Much of that quarry is now also used to store storm water and I believe that "supposedly" those tunnels under the homes were filled in.

Did you see those arches at the bottom? I think that's where the storm water from the city's storm drains comes from. While it isn't sewage, it would be water full of oil and whatever else you might find on the street. Now that that part of the quarry is closed, they use it to store, treat and release water that would otherwise flood basements. Chicago does have a wonderful lakefront and beaches that are much better suited for swimming! Thanks for the super visit!

Very cool Christian and no never heard of it or been by it. When I used to fly large scale 3D gas airplanes I always wanted to fly over a quarry so you could fly eye level yet have plenty of room below you (we call it being three mistakes high) but without having to be three mistakes high, hence flying on the deck where most 3d maneuvers are preformed. Lol! With that said awesome education vlog of the quarry! Very cool Christian, nice production! 🙏🏼
