Last tea round at TV Centre - an audio journey

- On my last full day at BBC TV Centre, where I've worked since 1983, I went to get the tea round. Leaving my desk on the fourth floor, I headed along the endless corridors, down to the newsroom on the first floor, and back up to the Filling Station (immortalised as @killingstation) for the tea. Along the way I was accompanied by the ghosts of news programmes past - see if you can spot the theme tunes. By the way there's the odd glitch and rogue black frame in this video - that's a deliberate tribute to the early days of TV News....:-)
RIP Peter Sissons, such a sad loss of a talented and professional newsreader.
The BBC spent millions kitting out their News Centre in 1998, converted all the TVC studios to HD in the noughties, then decided to spend a billion moving everything to BH by 2013. Then, surprise, surprise, they needed some studio space and decided to lease part of TVC back and needed office space for BBC Worldwide. Also the former offices around the courtyard now sell for a nice £ 2.7 million each as apartments. Something has gone badly wrong.
No that was a feature of the scheme, loads of consultants got really rich and the license payer got screwed.
I mean you have to trust consultants particularly the expensive ones they must be good.
Here's a little video I made on my last full day at BBC TV Centre - it's a quick tour of the news operation accompanies by the ghosts of news bulletins past....
The end of an era. It's a bit of a rabbit warren though.
Also I'm now wondering what ever happened to "Europe's Rapid Reaction Force"?
Thanks, Rory. Rather interesting :)
Great to hear all those soundbites for the memory
What a maze...!
succes
I remember seeing the BBC television centre way back in October 2003 and we got a tour around the TV centre by than and it was good
Nice video.
I remember visiting TV Centre & the newsrooms on a group tour in the mid 80s, and seeing Moira Stewart rehearsing the Saturday evening news.
Thanks for this upload Rory
Thanks for posting. End of an era. So much history made in that building in such a short time.
Hi there..these is my first time to encounter these kind of building and it is really amazing..your one of a kind...keep it up...
Fab video, brings back memories
Ahh "Animate Quantel" - magic :)
From 4th floor of Spur, to 1st floor of Stage 6, to 1st floor of Stage 5 (home to Studio N6, News Suites 1-11) to 2nd floor of Spur to The Filling Station
Very sad to see it go.
Awesome video well shot. That building never ceases to amaze me.i'm a bit worried by pictures surfacing online of whats left left inside tvc ie all the computers and other (life left in ) e scrap inc big flat screen tvs dumped in corridors 3 deep in each box that if i could get access to tvc i would happily recon and wipe the computers hard disks and donate the whole load to kids homes and kids at home that don't have pc's. Rory if you could help is there any one you can approach
Sounds like the old theme from the first breakfast news bulletin.
Yes...and edited in Final Cut Pro
Did you see any BBC Employees acting odd, around children mainly?
The BBC are insane for loosing this premises. It will certainly cost more than 200 mil to build anything near as good. I bet figures in excess of 1bl. Why when there are more licence payers in the UK than there were in the 60's does it have to close. Madness!! ;)
Roary u had final cut pro btw its philip
Rory, it's driving me nuts, but from which version of the news is the music from 0.25 to 0.45.
geoffnotjeff BBC Breakfast News from 1989 to 1993
It's the newsnight theme.
The themes in order were as follows
One o'clock News
BBC Breakfast News
Newsnight
Nine o'clock News
Six o'clock news
Modern day BBC News
BBC World News
Looks like anthony mcparltin on the left side.

I Think At 1:08 I Saw One Of The People In Review 2015!
The new building didn't cost license fee payers money
Wow - you found a GoPro that works? :O
The results look great, but after reading 10 pages of 1 star reviews and terrible experiences on Amazon's 'HD Hero 3' product page ( code B009TCD8V8 ) I decided to hold off a bit!
