How to bathe a Shih Tzu or a Brachycephalic Breed

- Bathing a Shih Tzu can be challenging especially the face.
Because Shih Tzu's are a Brachycephalic breed, meaning they are a short nosed dog, washing the face can be difficult.
Be careful not to get water in the nostrils.
Using a cup or a cloth may be safer for face washing or better yet use a water less shampoo on the face.
When using a shower hose to wash a face, put it on low pressure and use your thumb and fingers to spread the water on the face. Never blast the water hose into the face, the dog can choke and possibly drown or get a lung infection.

My mother was a groomer. She always protected the eyes with mineral oil and put cotton in the ears before bathing the dog.
This is my first Shih Tzu and your videos are very helpful. I appreciate the patience you show with the dogs. I hate seeing groomers in the retail stores where speed seems to be the priority and not the comfort of the dog.

These dogs are well behaved while being bathed. I lived with two Shih Tzu dogs (brother and sister) and used to bath them with me in the shower. I used Johnson's Baby Shampoo on them. I didn't have a detachable shower head, but, used to hold them up to the shower head for rinsing. They loved being towel dried...then dried using my blow drier...they were like "little models being pampered." After...they smelled so good...and they knew it! Great dogs!

i come from an entire family of groomers (im the 4th generation) and have been doing it since i was a child. you seem to have alot of patience and didnt half ass the bath like some people tend to do when doing a difficult dog. ive found that by putting my hand on the top of the head, right above the eyes like a visor when rinsing it, seems to help alot to keep them from freaking out. i do the sides and chin the same as you did here, i just try to cover the nose. I also always rinse the eyes with eye wash after rinsing soap off just to be safe. but you seem to really care about these poochies and you do very nice work. however if i was you, i would definitely get one of those suction cup with the ring to clip a noose to lol!
Wow! That is a great idea! I don't like bending over a bathtub, so I had the deepest sink I could find (14") installed in one of my bathrooms. I chose a faucet with a pull down sprayer - (Costco) . . . and I got a noose, but didn't yet figure out how to 'mount it'. Your suggestion of a suction cup with a hook is a GREAT one! Thanks so much!

The most cutest pet one can think of.
One drop of mineral oil in each eye protects from chlorine water or shampoo. It also softens the dried gunk and helps the shampoo wash it away. Johnsonâs baby shampoo is my choice for face.

I do the body first, thoroughly shampoo & scrub the legs, paws, underbelly, chest and mane. And you can do that twice for a thorough clean fur. The head is last so it doesn't get uncomfortable and frisky. They like warm water too

I usually hold the ears down over the canal so as to not get water in the ears when applying water. Very gentle with the puppy which is vey nice and considerate to the dog.

if u clean their eyes daily, there is no hard stuff on their faces. i clean my baby w/pads specially created for "eye boogers". hence, no problems on bath day.
The struggle is real when it comes to their faces!! One of my girls loves baths and the other one does not!! But i love them and i love giving them baths

We have 2 Shih Tzu dogs and they react exactly like this at bath time. I talk to them all the way through bath time just like you do, lots of reassurance because they really hate having the face washed. Mostly I have to use a face washer. Thanks for all the tips on how to hold the face in the video, I will try that out maybe using a cup or small plastic watering can ( improvised shower head!) to control water pressure as I donât have a nifty hand held tap attachment you have in this video.

Yes, I mix my shampoo with water. I pour the shampoo in first and then add warm water and shake it up.

Mine are used to getting a bath and every quarterly i send them to the grooming shop to get properly groomed but sometimes they wanted to get away too when i bathe them, just the face that is a challenge but either way it gets done. Love my two shih tzu Casper and Happy! đ¶â€ïžđ¶â€ïž
If they do get water up their nose will it hurt them or give them any health issues?
The water will cause sneezing or coughing. It will bother them for a few minutes but should be fine after. If you get too much water in the nose, they can possibly drown, so be careful.
For the face I just use a washcloth. My shihtzu is small enough to fit in my kitchen sink and that helps to keep him still. To dry, a hairdryer in the cool setting is ideal but avoid using it on the face because it can be suffocating, again, do to that pushed in face. I highly recommend using cotton balls in the ears because shihtzu's are prone to ear infections. After washing your pup use a good ear cleaner, let your dog shake it off and swipe the ear with another two clean cotton balls. Afterwards, you can use the hairdryer on the cool air setting to help dry the inside of the ear. Another very handy item is swimmers drops, if you dog loves playing in the rain or getting in the mud, swimming, etc. these drops help the ears stay dry.

I pick off the crusty stuff around her eyes before the bath, so it will not be so hard during the bath. But their faces get stinky and need some tear free shampoo on it. I have never gotten any in her eyes. You just have to be careful.Though she doesn't try to get away , so it's not as hard.

I did not blast water in his face, at least I hope I didn't. It may look like that in the video but I assure you I don't blast, I only wet the hair there. I have seen groomers actually blast the face and the dog will swallow the water, it goes up the nose and in the mouth, they start choking and vomiting, so that's what I meant, đ
I usually use baby shampoo on the eye area, it rinses super easy and if it does get in the eyes, it doesn't hurt. But rinses really quickly.

A good groomer. Be very careful in selecting a groomer for your Tzu. Get refs from at least 5 Tzu people having been with the groomer for at least one year. My groomer is excellent as is this groomer but there are bad Tzu groomers out there having caused aspiration pneumonia. You don't want any bathers -helpers - either as a good groomer in my area does the bathing. A groomer does it all not her teen daughter as bather to save time to make more money.

When my mom had one and her vet bathe her when she needed intensive bathing. Otherwise I'd bathe her, she didn't have a problem with the face or water.
I refuse to take a pet to the groomer because I have heard too many horror stories over the years.

Yes you can use dog conditioner.
how do you dry him? also how often do you bathe him?
Most shih tzus should be bathed at least monthly or every 2 to 3 weeks. Drying is done with a high velocity dryer. Check out my other videos, I have one on drying.
Blow drying is a good way but NEVER put it on hot.
My dog is very picky if there is no water in the tub he won't go in if the candles are not lit he will win if his toys are not there then you better off just put him in a lake
Taking good, proper care of a shih tzu, the ONLY way to take care of shih tzu or any pet, requires a lot of work. I can only speak from my own experience, the love and entertainment my Shih Tzu gave me made caring for him a labor of love that I was happy to do..

I use a wet washcloth around the eyes first. I do use a washcloth on the body to help get the dirt and or fleas off. Using a light color cloth you can see the debris. I also use a conditioner to help with tangles when you blow dry .
