this show is so fun and fresh because the director and screenwriter is a gay man doing the most with retelling history, making it camp and making mary, a mainly historically erased character, a true MOTHER.

When Elizabeth died, James inherited England because the next Tudor descendant in line. Henry VIII's legitimate heirs were all dead, so the next in line were the descendants of his sister Margaret who first married James IV of Scotland giving birth to James V. She then married Scottish noble Archibald Douglas, the Earl of Angus, giving birth to Margaret Douglas. James V fathered Mary, Queen of Scots and Margaret Douglas married Matthew Stewart, Earl of Lennox and gave birth to his son Henry Stewart, Lord Darnley. Henry married Mary (yes a half 1st cousin marriage) producing James VI of Scotland, who as Elizabeth I's double 1st cousin twice removed was the next closest heir by primogeniture.

That bit where Somerset says to George, "i never wanted to keep you from the king", i was hoping for Samuel L Jackson from Pulp Fiction to be inserted saying, "Yes you did! YES. YOU. DID!" 🤣🤣🤣

Somerset doesn't get hanged because James is still a bit soft on him - he and the missus are however in the tower for 7 years and lose all influence.
I absolutely love how they're going full bitchy shade on the court where everyone's battling to do the cattiest comments possible to get noticed. (we can't all wear transparent shirts and dance divinely like George) I'm now wondering if Mary dressed up like that on purpose to make an entrance and then threw hands at least partly to get George noticed. Mary and Bacon team-up to advance George ftw!

Mary has been very strategic up to this point, so her attire and behaviour seemd out of caracter. Sure, even the best chess player can make a mistake. But concidering how she would have presented herself to the king in her own house and the fact that she had met the queen before this, I do think she went about her appearance in court deliberately. Also, she had about one cup of wine...

it's like 'seriously, Robert? You didn't keep him dangling and George didn't try to seduce him to get closer to the king?' Hate fucking is a thing, boys. Do better.

Perhaps someone has noted this already, but the Somersets weren't hanged, they were just thrown into the Tiwer, from which they were released eventually _Everybody else_ involved in the murder got the death penalty.

Honestly, I felt sorry for Sumerset. Cause, you know, everybody would do that to has King's attention for themselves! To be and stay King's favourite! George and his mother are just as bad as Sumerset!

He killed his best friend, or he allowed his death 'cause he was so dumb and so in love with Frances that he believed her.
He deserved to lose everything, his title, his position, his wife and his daughter

About James and Elizabeth: Elizabeth's grandad and James's greatmother were brother&sister.
About the Overbury affari there is a lovely novel called The Dangerous Kingdom of Love, with Bacon ( Silver Fox ) narrator and Bacon/George... such a lovely novel
Robbie and Frances, his wife, were never hanged but they spent 8 and 10 in the Tower and they were banished from court and he refused to see her when he was released, Overbury was not only his friend, he was "his friend".
Open wikipedia, it's 100 times better when you knows 😎

@craigk.gowens7534 did a much more in depth comment on how James 1 and Elizabeth are related but if you like it simple, Mary Queen of Scots was Elizabeth's cousin, and Mary's son James became James 6th of Scotland when she died, and when Elizabeth died became James 1st of England. But check out the other person's comment for a proper history lesson.
Also fun fact: George Villiers and his actions were a huge push to the Round Heads, lead by Olivier Cromwell who took down Charles 1st (James's son) and got rid of Kings for a while!

I know the show is about Mary and George (duh) but with King James in the mix, I would have liked MORE witchcraft.

At time he had stopped to blindly believe in witchcraft, it's a slow debunking but it worked, in the 20s he was still a misoginistic but he accepted that his mother was innocent and not every woman was a witch
