WOW! Steve....I am 58 yrs old....used to play in shit bands in my youth..LOL..Never been a great player...know most of my chords, but gave it away over 20 yrs ago. This video has inspired me so much - I just went out and bought a brand new yamaha gig pack with a VOX amp. My very 1st NEW guitar I might add. This is goldmine. So essentially what is happening here is playing the partial sequence of pentatonic scale in first position corresponding to the chord the solo is played over. Suddenly it is all beginning to get unlocked in mind and make sense. Thank you Steve.

I'm self taught except for 4 months of lessons almost 13 years ago. I've practiced pentatonic scales forever but this is so simple with some instant results. After I get used to this solo I can throw in the number 1 and 2 strings as well. Thank you.
Should have learnt the guitar back in the 60's, yes - I was young then! Just decided to pick up the guitar now, with no music knowledge whatsoever. For new guitar players - he is essentially teaching the first shape of the MINOR PENTATONIC scale - a scale widely used by rock and blues musicians for soloing. He is leaving out notes but essentially it is teaching you how to use the notes from minor pentatonic to craft a simple solo, placing emphasis on the root note. Absolutely brilliant lesson!

Thank you for this lesson man! I’ve been learning pentatonic scales and this method is really going to help me remember where that root note lies within the scale. I’m new to soloing and want to feel the music a bit more so just using the six notes for now out of the pentatonic scales really simplifies it for me which will help me focus more on listening. CoolingTower - I'm reading a book called "Fretboard Logic" at the moment that teaches the CAGED system and scales that go with chords for riffing. It's changed my playing forever. Can't recommend it enough.

This works because the shape you are referring to (set of 6 notes) is part of the first pattern of the pentatonic scale that you explained in another video. I love how you brought it together into a consistent theme that goes along with soloing! THANKS!
WOW! Im an intermediate, trying to teach my son, but Im not a guitar teacher. I wish someone explained this to me 20 years ago, i would be way more advanced now. Expert instruction! Expert instructor! For a bedroom guitar player, this should turn on a light. You obviously know that your "audience" is not Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana, PHDs in music theory, etc. So, one of the best "beginning" guitar lessons that I've ever seen for soloing. Use the Force for good Steve! Rock on! Rip it up! lol (I also "like it" that you don't "sound" like you just smoked a pound of dope.)
I started playing in '89, started working on lead patters in '93, and in all these years, that's the best and most memorable chord-to-pattern correlation I have ever heard. Very nice job. Thanks for posting.

One of the best guitar lessons I have ever seen. This would be disliked by many theoretical and classical nylon-guitar-teachers who want to earn money in their lessons, talking about theory in 3 hours, making much money with talking and not with playing. Two teachers of this kind made me deleting my guitar lessons here on CZcams by bashing me because I had a similar way of teaching my lessons - so please ignore the dislikes and keep doing what you are doing. I deleted all my lessons to stop the bashing - my fault. I should have been stronger - strong like you! Of course I was not professional like you, but it was fun to do video lessons - I was one of the first german channels here on CZcams teaching guitar for beginners. Thanks for your lessons.

I've played rhythm guitar for twenty years and that is such a helpful little hint it makes me wonder how much easier the world of soloing May very well be 👍😎
The world of soloing is super easy once you put in the practice. Don't overthink it or think that you have to do everything right. Just explore the fretboard. Try to copy parts of your favorite solos or maybe try to play a vocal line. Or better yet, make up your own melody. Oops, the video just aid "explore"! I swear I didn't steal it from him. :) When you use this method he taught you here, when you go up onto the 2nd and 1st string go one fret higher for your top note (so that there are two frets between your notes instead of one, like in his "6 note" example).
Add to the fact that I'm a lefty and it compounds my confusion, but dang, you just helped me start to understand a bit of the fretboard. THANK YOU SO MUCH STEVE!!! I feel like I can move forward a bit now. 😁
best lesson yet. simple and to the point. too many instructors try to cram so much theory (which is very important) that they forget how to make it fun in the process. keep it up man!

I caught a video Monday the 11th 01 21 it was very inspiring . It was a live feed . The teacher I had been studying under for nearly 15 years I just got really very little from it. The video I watched that was 45 min. long I got more out of that than the last 15 years from the other guy. I have to start with beginners because I have found the just playing scales over and over is boring going no place . Getting only tiny pieces of info just does not work . Steve you do a super job explaining everything . I had a band but with this covid 19 well we do not jam anymore. We did play out and always welcomed to play again. I am the lead guitarist not great but know enough to get by . I do not want to be just getting by . I believe You can help me change that . THANK YOU !

I've been playing rhythm for over 25 years. Yes, I can play some riffs or some little bits within the chords, but this makes sense. Thank you for keeping it clear and simple and making beginning solo parts not so elusive and intimidating.

Thank you for this lesson man! I’ve been learning pentatonic scales and this method is really going to help me remember where that root note lies within the scale.
I’m new to soloing and want to feel the music a bit more so just using the six notes for now out of the pentatonic scales really simplifies it for me which will help me focus more on listening. Hopefully as I get better I’ll start feeling comfortable with the rest of the shape too.

I think I learned more on this video to actually enjoy playing than I ever have. Ive known chords for many years, but never knew how to throw in any riffs

CoolingTower - I'm reading a book called "Fretboard Logic" at the moment that teaches the CAGED system and scales that go with chords for riffing. It's changed my playing forever. Can't recommend it enough.

I have been playing for 30+ years, I am perplex why this very simple but awesome technique has not been tough to me in the hundred of lesson over the years. Super fun to have stumble across this.
This works because the shape you are referring to (set of 6 notes) is part of the first pattern of the pentatonic scale that you explained in another video. I love how you brought it together into a consistent theme that goes along with soloing! THANKS!

WOW! Im an intermediate, trying to teach my son, but Im not a guitar teacher. I wish someone explained this to me 20 years ago, i would be way more advanced now. Expert instruction! Expert instructor! For a bedroom guitar player, this should turn on a light. You obviously know that your "audience" is not Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana, PHDs in music theory, etc. So, one of the best "beginning" guitar lessons that I've ever seen for soloing. Use the Force for good Steve! Rock on! Rip it up! lol (I also "like it" that you don't "sound" like you just smoked a pound of dope.)
I started playing in '89, started working on lead patters in '93, and in all these years, that's the best and most memorable chord-to-pattern correlation I have ever heard. Very nice job. Thanks for posting.

One of the best guitar lessons I have ever seen.
This would be disliked by many theoretical and classical nylon-guitar-teachers who want to earn money in their lessons, talking about theory in 3 hours, making much money with talking and not with playing. Two teachers of this kind made me deleting my guitar lessons here on CZcams by bashing me because I had a similar way of teaching my lessons - so please ignore the dislikes and keep doing what you are doing. I deleted all my lessons to stop the bashing - my fault. I should have been stronger - strong like you!
Of course I was not professional like you, but it was fun to do video lessons - I was one of the first german channels here on CZcams teaching guitar for beginners.

The world of soloing is super easy once you put in the practice. Don't overthink it or think that you have to do everything right. Just explore the fretboard. Try to copy parts of your favorite solos or maybe try to play a vocal line. Or better yet, make up your own melody.
Oops, the video just aid "explore"! I swear I didn't steal it from him. :)
When you use this method he taught you here, when you go up onto the 2nd and 1st string go one fret higher for your top note (so that there are two frets between your notes instead of one, like in his "6 note" example).

I caught a video Monday the 11th 01 21 it was very inspiring . It was a live feed . The teacher I had been studying under for nearly 15 years I just got really very little from it. The video I watched that was 45 min. long I got more out of that than the last 15 years from the other guy. I have to start with beginners because I have found the just playing scales over and over is boring going no place . Getting only tiny pieces of info just does not work . Steve you do a super job explaining everything . I had a band but with this covid 19 well we do not jam anymore. We did play out and always welcomed to play again. I am the lead guitarist not great but know enough to get by . I do not want to be just getting by . I believe You can help me change that . THANK YOU !
