- The Corpus Hermeticum are the texts and teachings ascribed to the legendary Egyptian sage, priest, and philosopher Hermes Trismegistus. When translated and published by Ficino in 1471 these texts were heralded as the very source of pure, perennial wisdom. In the subsequent years, these ideas went on to have a massive impact upon what is now called western esotericism. Just what are these teaching? What is the history of the text? It feels like some knowledge or proposed knowledge makes esotericism be twofold shrouded: once by its secret nature and twice by the people who want to insert themselves in these traditions, some probably not even being true believers themselves. Even as a non-true believer I see this
I feel the New Age movement should have been about embracing new fields of study, like esoteric history. Not about rationalizing why a soccer mom should spend 200$ on a specific type of rock that aligns her meridians.
Somewhere in its development, these ideas were perverted.

"Philosophy was a way of life in the ancient world". See that? That's what I mean. You put us in the 1rst century mindset. This fosters a greater understanding of themes you present. You're very good at conveying that world that gave rise to the gods of our ancestors. which is more meaningful than most realize.

If you happened to have mastered the Dutch language, the book is a perfect compendium in Hermetic philosophy.
The book includes translation of:
-The Corpus Hermeticum
-The Asclepius
-The Hermetic fragments of Stobaeus
-Fragments of Vienna, Berlin and Oxford
-Hermetic Testimonia of several Ancient writers (Zosimus, Tertullianus, Lactantius, ...)
And besides these translations, you also have a ton of references and commentaries from the authors concerning Hermetic texts and history.
My favorite part about Dr. Sledges videos; not only do I learn about the topic at hand, but the amount of 'proxy' knowledge divulged alongside is incredible.

I love what a nerd you are and I celebrate it. So few people actually read these texts. They are the bread and butter of Occult philosophy we are supposed to read them in my lineage, but there are a few true hermetics left, even among us who train in those lineages. and I love your scholarly approach. It’s magnificent.
Hermes only taught one student, His son. But that one son Asclepius (sic?) went on to teach pretty much every founding father of philosophy.

This is the best video to introduce someone with Corpus Hermeticum.It is short in lenghth than other and provides with full understanding like technical Hermeticism and philosophy Hermeticism.
Excellent video, have recently been reading the Nag Hammadi Hermetic texts. Have always thought there was a strong similarity between the Upanishads and the 'main' Corpus Hermeticum texts, especially in the discourse between teacher and student. I do think the Emerald Tablets are much older than estimated, and were thankfully preserved in Arabia.
It could be that their are earlier and it would be great to find a Greek or Egyptian version. The dunes still hold their secrets, I suspect!

Thanks, Eric! Yeah, it's a nice translation. The Copenhaver is a real technical work and I appreciate that he lays his focus there the WoH just reads more like scripture to me. It would be a neat thing to actually put some of the Hermetic hymns to music Wardruna / Heilung style, i.e., trying to recreate the sounds of ancient Alexandria. I think the translations in the Way of Hermes would be a great fit for that...I mean, until you do it proper in Greek or even Egyptian!

I'm paraphrasing but Dan Attrell makes the hypothesis that the Corpus Hermeticum was an attempt by the Macedonians to sincretize all different spiritual traditions across the empire into one. Hence the influences of Jewish, Egyptian, Greek, Gnostic, Persian, Hindu and by some accounts Buddhist teachings.

Excellent work on this, I was a bit confused about the structure of The Corpus Hermeticum. I did find that reading Plato's Republic and the Kybalion alongside it does help in making more connections and building off one another
