- EPIC DAY | Benny Ortiz | Slow Pitch Jigging Monster Groupers | Offshore Fishing
Pete and I (Johnny) headed across the state to Madeira Beach Florida. We met up with Capt. Anthony Belmonte, Benny Ortiz, and Rick around 4 a.m. for an offshore slow pitch jigging trip. This was truly one of the greatest most epic trips of slow pitch jigging I have ever experienced. The gulf coast of Florida is known for its grouper fishing slow pitch jigging is absolutely deadly for this particular species. We spent a full day offshore reeling up monster groupers from the deep. We dig into some great information on Jigging gear and tactics for deep water jigging.
I almost don't want to give you guys his info, but here you go............

Man I love these guys- big fan of the SPJ. Just bought me some Johnny Jigs, headed to Alaska mid-May to see what I can do on halibut and rockfish with ‘em. Won’t be as deep as these grouper, but gonna chase ‘em hard! Great video. 😲
Thanks Dave...That sounds like a blast...Good luck and Tight lines...Johnny
Benny is the best of jigging technique peoples . Congrat men ! You finished shool.
I play slow jigging like you, i fight 1/2 pitch, 3/4 pitch, 1 pitch of handle turn.
I also fight slow jigging like mr. yamato too.
Let me get those numbers tho?!? Great vid. Love all the info, super informative! Keep doing your thing and tight lines!

Great video guys u get some cool looking fish over there! Would love to see yas fishing in aus one day🤙🎣 our fish don't mind a jig either haha 🐟
Maybe one day!
I’m going deep with him this year, I’ve gotta do it
To many days between shows. That's right its the Johnny jigs show! Can we get regular weekly episode? Some of us don't get to SPJ as much as others. I need your vids to keep the shakes away Lol great vid as usual!
John!!!!!!!
I'm going to pump out some videos in May go time😜
@@JohnnyJigsTV To quote the great Jets linebacker Bart Scott, "CANT WAIT!"
You boys had an epic day out there! The custom jig sure is interesting, can you post a link if the gentleman has gone live?
It was a special day for sure. Yes I will post a link....
Lol dude has a two conchs hat on lol
Those gps spots come from long time commercial grouper/red snapper Captains or their sons that fished out of Mad Bch, I'm sure.
Awesome video! Great Day on the Water! Question for Benny - I have a Shimano Game Type H SPJ rod and OceaJig 2K that I'm breaking in this year. I've caught a few Bluefin Tuna while SPJ last season in the 75 - 125 lb range on a spin setup, but was wondering if you would feel comfortable using the Game Type H and OJ2K battling this class BFT?
As long as your fight the fish properly it should handle them. Remember, point at the fish and crank rather than lift and pump.
That's our normal ride out in NC. haha
Lol...A long ride for us out of Pompano is 20 min..Then your in 1000' of water.
@@JohnnyJigsTV I wish! Out of Wrightsville Beach NC we usually make like a 65 mile run.
Can you explain that monster 5lb jig at Icast this year......trying to figure that one out.
Absolutely incredible trip! What lbs test were you guys using? Do you notice a big difference when using the PG over the HG reels?
Hey Eric, Thank you. I was using 15 & 30# test. I believe Benny was using 20# test. I can't speak for the pg but Benny seamed to really like the power of it for pulling the grouper off the bottom as well as it being easier to retrieve the jig...
Whats the advantage of using those style of rods vs. standard highspeed spinning outfits? Is it tiring constantly jigging those 1lb jigs?
Yo’ another great video! What’s up with the catch and cooks?
What up Sweet Dreamz..We should. Maybe in one of our upcoming videos.
Can’t wait!
Did I miss it or did you say what reels you were using?
I just have 2 quick questions:
1- What is the ideal weight of a metal jig in the Red Sea for a depth of around 100-150 meters?
2- What do you recommend for the depth of 100-150 meters targeting groupers fish in rocks and corals in the bottom a single or double hooks and in the front or both sides of the jig?
Thanks and waiting for your replay soon
Not Benny Ortiz, but somewhat knowledgeable.
1- Generally, you should should measure the weight of your jig to correlate with your target depth. Since I'm American, I usually start with 1 gram for every 1 foot of water, give or take a few. Since Meters are a bit different, I would generally measure 3-4 grams for every meter. So at 100-150 meters, I would start off using a 300-500 gram jig respectively. Depending on how strong the current is, how hard the wind is moving your boat, and how many people are on the boat, you may go lighter or heavier. Generally you want the line from the tip of your rod to maintain as close to perfect verticality as possible (read as straight up and down).
2- Grouper, and other ambush predators that live in rocks, generally try to swallow their prey whole, or attempt to attack the head. If you want to be safe, put 1 assist hook at the top, and 1 at the bottom of your jig. While you catch them, take note of which hook tends to have a fish hooked up to it. The fish in your part of the world may behave different, so take notes and pay attention. Once you figure out whether or not you get more hits on the top or bottom, then you should put two assist hooks on that side.

Will do Robert...👊
Great ! Where can i buy this nice Sport Fishing long sleeve (white) ?
johnnyjigs.com/collections/apparel
PE 3 or PE 2 line at the deep spot? was it very snaggy there?
Not shaggy at all. PE 2 all day
No wonder I can't get a 400g gold and glow torpedo. i've been checking almost daily for weeks now lol
SG03 bad news.. it's going to be a about 4 weeks before they are back in stock....but we are manufacturing a wider selection..👍
@@JohnnyJigsTV 4 weeks isn't bad just want to get some for when the dead calm summer weather kicks in. Everything you guys make is killer so I'm sure it will be worth the wait
What kind of rod Benny was using? Any links for it? Thanks!
Shimano Game Type Slow J, in MH and H.
@@bennyortiz2770 Benny, how deep were you fishing the Heavy rod? The action and recoil of the rod looks amazing!
@@DownloaderVideo I was using the H model in close to 800ft with a 500g jig. Also in the video is the MH model, close to 500ft, using 350g and 400g jigs.
@@bennyortiz2770 Thanks Benny, at the 8:14 minutes mark on the video is that 800 ft deep?
What braded is benny use? Is that PE. 2 diameter 0.23 mm ?
PowerPro 30lb under 450ft, PowerPro 20lb deeper than that
😊Thanks Benny
WHAT CHARTER WAS THAT?
Hey Oscar, There is a link in the video description
How many miles did y’all go out ?
Scotty to be honest with you I'm not 100% sure. I do know it took us close to 3 hours to get to the deeper water.
@@JohnnyJigsTV so prob like 100-175 miles out?if you had to guess
That sounds about right..
Who is the captain in the video?
Captain Anthony is the guy in the white hooded UV shirt flipping the fish onto the boat, and throwing them in the cooler.
Why did Benny switch to Shimano?
Mostly to bring SPJ to a much larger audience and to help develop an integrated system of gear - rods/reels/line - that will offer multiple classes of tackle from beginners to pro level fishermen.
@@bennyortiz2770 How you like Shimano Slow J MH and H.
@@TheZamlaz There are two different offerings from Shimano currently. They are the Grappler Type Slow J and the Game Type Slow J. The Grappler is a good introductory rod that has a better price point than the Game. The Game Type Slow J is an upper intermediate to advanced rod, that I like quite a bit. It's a very very good deep water rod - one of the best I've fished. The MH is my go-to with 300-450g jigs and the H for 400-550g jigs, depending on the action I want.
@@bennyortiz2770 Thank you for your time Benny!!!
Whether it be grappler or game, if you were using jigs around 200g usually would you go with the Medium or Medium heavy? (Potentially up to 300g jigs on occasion.)
Whos the guy in the back he looks so sad
Great job guys! I think it is better to kill the fishes with a knife instead of letting them suffer and die in the fridge. But you know better...
We have been trying Ikjime. I am not very confident in doing it yet on film. But I agree with you Panos.
no one can afford the crap you’re advertising
