The venue is the Myer Music Bowl in Melbourne (Australia), next to the Yarra River and Royal Botanic Gardens. Great open air venue right in the middle of Melbourne. These guys were huge in the 60s, and as you could tell from the other farewell concert, dearly loved.

In 1967 Melbourne's population was about 2.2m. They estimate more than 200,000 people turned up, ie around 10% of the city. Goes to show how popular they were, and not much else to do on a Sunday in Melbourne back then.

I was in jr. high school when this came out, and I listened to it endlessly on my little transistor radio. In fact, all popular radio was AM then. Judith has an unmistakable voice; it's clarity is just timeless. The Seekers were part of the folk music trend of the 1960s, of which Peter Paul & Mary, The Kingston Trio, and Simon & Garfunkel were my favorites. Cheers from Oklahoma, USA!

Thank you for your beautiful reaction to one of my all time favourite songs from one of my all time favourite bands. I was born in 1970 but my parents played The Seekers in our house all throughout my childhood, so I grew up with them. To the lady in this reaction video - THANK YOU for acknowledging Judith's beauty, even to the end of her life. Not only was she still a beautiful woman but, from all of those people who knew her, apparently she was a very special, sweet and kind lady who only ever had good things to say about others and always greeted people with her beautiful big smile. She may be now physically gone but thanks to people such as yourself discovering this timeless music, artists like Judith Durham, The Seekers and MANY others will live FOREVER.

The concert at Myer music bowl in Melbourne was attended by about 200,000 people. At the time that was 10% of Melbourne’s population.

Thank you. This song has my heart. Georgy Girl is what we call our granddaughter. She was accidentally brain damaged by a hospital and they told us to put her in a home and forget she was born. She would never look at us, see us or eat food. We didn’t listen. Georgy will only ever be 3 years old but she eats and speaks. She is gentle and wonderful, even bossy if her little brother breaks the rules and he listens to her.
Georgy is everyone’s light and love. When they sing there’s another Georgy deep inside. We know this is true and she is amazing.

Never have I seen a movie with a more perfect theme song. From the opening titles to the end credits, this magical song tells the story. The lyrics for the end credits are slightly changed (not in the recorded hit version) to fit perfectly. Nominated for a Best Song Oscar (it should have won). The movie was wonderful, but this song is at a level of genius all its own.

This was at the Myer Music Bowl in Melbourne - an open-air concert venue used especially for the Carols By Candlelight Christmas concert. It’s an iconic venue - John Farnham performed there many times at the Carols. The song is about a girl named Georgi - a sort of coming of age song encouraging Georgi to be all that she can be, not be constrained. It was a world wide hit. Isn’t Judith just wonderful? And look at her in her long dress. This was live. How talented the singers and groups back then were - not need for technology, just raw music. Great reaction.

You’re right that The Meyer Music Bowl is a type of (in English) ‘amphitheater’. The origin of the word is Ancient Greek and means- both sides.
Georgy in this song is just a girl’s name and not a place name. Remembering that the song is an early sixties song and the sixties was an era of the peace and love movement which followed the more conservative fifties. I think the song is basically telling the girl from the fifties era to be a bit less conservative and to let her hair down and wear her heart on her sleeve a bit more.

I enjoy the back and forth between the couple and I believe they made some valid points. I remember standing outside my sister's bedroom door listening to her playing this song on her record player. She noticed me and invited me into her room to listen with her. She was 8 years older than I was, and I looked up to her. Whenever I hear the melody at the beginning of Georgy Girl it immediately takes me back in time, when my sister would share her love of music with me.

'The Carnival Is Over' has now now taken on a poignant meaning with the passing of Judith Durham. There'll never be another singer like Judith.

Georgy is short for Georgina. The song is taken from the film 'Georgy Girl', a very good film with a wonderful cast. Lynn Redgrave was such a good actress, as were the rest of the Redgraves.
