with expensive supplies there is an expensive expectation with it that the art must turn out "good" else you wasted the money. i love when art feels more playful and approachable

    • @Littlewings1211
      @Littlewings1211 Před 2 lety +16

I think that is a good point. It's also something that makes a lot of people (myself included) almost hoard the more expensive or better quality supplies they have and continue to use the old, cheaper stuff so you don't "ruin" that nice canvas/canvas board/piece of wood/expensive sketchbook etc and you don't use up the expensive art mediums you spent ages saving up for and get left with nothing to show for it because you don't have any "finished" pieces, just a lot of "practice" pieces and experimentation etc.
For me I do it most often with supplies I am not comfortable with/new at regardless of the price because I have an idea in my head, get the stuff to do it with and then am too scared of messing it up to start! 😂 I love the whole 'customising shoes' thing on CZcams so I decided to treat myself to a set of fabric paints and a cheap pair of white canvas shoes/trainers 👟. They have now been sitting in my room for several months because I am too scared of messing them up by choosing a design I'm not good enough to reproduce on shoes or in paint or just being unfamiliar with the materials. Every time I see a new shoe customisation video I get all excited by the end and think "yeah I'm going to do mine, they'll be amazing!" but I will go to get the paints and basically think myself out of it with all the ways I could easily f**k it up! 😂 😂

I am literally married to Block Crayons, specifically Stockmar (Pronunced Shtockmar) beeswax crayons, also known as Waldorf Crayons. They are my favorite drawing medium in the whole world at this moment of time. I will give anything to have unlimited supply of Lemon Yellow, Golden Yellow, Carmine, Red Violet, Cobalt and Ultra Marine, in fact those are the only ones that I use regularly. They layer so well, their color transparency is epic, the choices of use are unlimited , and you can literally draw with them from the inside out. I am willing to talk about them enthusiastically for a whole conversation, they are so good and satisfying to work with.

You can just work at them for a long time and get great details, shades and tones, or swipe a few swipes and get a beautiful abstract picture with a sense of movement, you can layer and layer and layer and get a masterpiece made. I think the benefit of these and the Neocolor 1 are lightfast and can be used in a professional artist setting. I think that only 12 out of 126 pastels are considered fugitive. It's probably why they cost so much more than normal crayons. That being said, they're quite pricey if you plan on getting more than a few colors! I think you can get them individually open stock though :)

I love my Caran d'Ache crayons! I purchased the large set and, for my trial run, I drew/painted a Monet inspired pond with lily pads, flowers, and a bridge in the background. It's a small piece, roughly 4"x5", and my husband keeps it attached to the sun visor in his truck. I thought it was okay for my first attempt but he thinks it's a masterpiece. I guess that explains why we've been together for 25 years. :-)

I do occasionally use a bit of water to smooth out the color, especially when for example using lights against a dark paper, and I don't want the grain of the paper coming through. But 95% of the time I use them dry. And if I do wet them, I often go over them again dry, because I do like that crayon texture. I just ADORE them! If you really take a hard look at the dark night sky, you can see that it isn't perfectly black, it really does have a bit of color to it!

I once read that charan de ache sorted the Neocolor wax crayons as a student / hobby because they enable more expressive art techniques
and somehow they also thought that wax crayons = chrafting and hobby.
But there were other thicker watercolor sticks, the NeoArt: Aquarell, which are more highly pigmented and are count as an Art medium by Caran de Ache.
At some point they thought that it would be technically better to expand the neocolor colors from 84 to 126 and also wanted to increase the quality in order to include it as an artist media,
because they saw that many artists also use it.
But then the NeoArt Sticks was thrown out because it was harder to sell,
maybe some thought that they are the same thing and are only thicker and more expensive.

Please try Oil pastels. They're like crayons but more pigmented. You can get result like a painting and also the texture looks great.

Can these be layered on top of non-water soluble crayons? I’d love to see a combo of the two if you get the other carandache set!

I love these crayons. I have the Neocolor I and the II. I like the non-soluble ones better, I think the soluble ones are not as pretty once activated. They also come in metallic colors... and I'm kind of crazy about those.

They are expensive but in my opinion they are totally worth it. BTW if anybody needs an entry-level set at a lower price point the faber-castell ones are good. They are technically for children but you wouldn't know it based on how they perform. I don't know about lightfastness though

somehow it’s weird hearing those crayons are high quality and not childlike, because in Switzerland they’re like the kindergarten crayons every school uses them, I have so many memories from kindergarten using them and trying to get the paper of when i used to much crayon and had to sharpen it.
