  • Taken during a quarter of doubles on the 5 at Foots Cray.
These are a delightful little 5, partly for the novelty of ringing them from the pews in the middle of church and the fact the belfry consists of what looks like a wooden shed above the church on the roof - which does sway a bit. This doesn't affect ringability though.
They are a scaled down, apparently almost bodge job in the mid / late 1900s when money was scarce, version of a modern, 'properly hung' ring such as Farnborough, Kent (now an 8) or South Ockenden. The belfry is accessed by a vertical step ladder going up the inside of the church then a beam followed by another rather precarious step ladder to a wooden hatch inside the church roof, leading to a cavity, then the bells. By all accounts it is tiny.
No pictures / videos of the bells sadly for safety reasons and absence of a key (it is on the list once an official person in charge is appointed though).
In terms of go, they take some working. Ringing at a steady speed however helps maintain control avoiding major trips to obtain decent ringing, being on on scaled down little bell fittings.
