Hello everybody!
As promised, here's the video on how to blend with markers! I hope this tutorial is easy to understand and follow and gives helpful tips on how to blend with your copics or any other alcohol based markers. In the video, I used several different brands, and for much of the blending, I actually used a chisel tip! I wanted to show that it was possible and you don't NEED a brush tip or copic marker to achieve a smooth blend.
Let me know what other tutorials you want to see in the future!
All the best,
Nicole 🥝

You're welcome!
This video is great! I love the tips!
Thank you! Glad you think so!
I love these thank you so much
And thank you too!
Super helpful. I always do a super detailed gray scale and then after it drys do a quick one coat color which is easy to mess up
Glad it was helpful!
fun fact: you can also create hair using the feathering method, just pick a dark color stroke half of it and pick a lighter color and stroke leave some space to put the same dark color you recently used or put a darker color, this is optional but for better results make sure to line art it with your darkest color and done!
another method: you need three markers for this one use the darkest color, follow the line art of the hair using the marker. get your medium color and do the same and use the lightest to color the white spaces if you want an accurate one make sure to identify your light and shadow first, you can also blend the darkest and medium or all the colors or just that way
I think there's many different ways to color and shade hair - thanks for sharing yours!
I can't wait to try these tips! Thank you so much!!

Thanks for the amazing tips my only problem before was that on some parts of the drawing it was dark and on the others it was light so this helped me a lot. And also I love your drawings I also try to make them.

@@SketchingwithRabbits I'd really like to check other maker tutorials too!
Thank you for this video. It was very helpful. This morning, I was waiting in the lobby at the doctor's office and noticed there were adult coloring books and cheap Cra-Z-Art washable markers, which if I'm not mistaken basically translates to water-based. I decided to give them a try to stave off boredom while waiting and really didn't expect much being that the brand is so cheap and well...waterbased onto of cheap quality. I used the feathering/flicking technique and was actually quite pleased with the results. Not to mention quite surprised. The paper didn't peel and it wasn't much thicker than standard printer paper and I actually got some decent, even pretty, blends. Kinda made my day. Of course, some of the markers were nearly dried out and/or the nibs were quite worn, but I was actually quite surprised and impressed by the performance. I'm even considering buying a set of those cheapest just to play with. I actually had fun with them. 😁 I'm always very happy and pleased when my artistic endeavors turn out better than expected, and believe me, the bar was low with those.
Wow! That's great that you were able to get some blending with water-based markers! Glad to hear you had fun as well!
@@SketchingwithRabbits thanks 🙂 I was really surprised.

I'm having issues with paper I cant seem to find the correct GSM my blender pen makes the paper too wet then it tares and rolls up....wrong paper yes but which paper is best😄
Thank you awesome video and your blend is on point👌🏼💯
What paper do you use? For this video, I used Strathmore Bristol Paper which is 270gsm. I like it because it's super thick and can withhold lots of ink. In my video reviewing the Spectrum Noir markers, I used the Strathmore Marker Paper which is 190gsm. I think that paper holds up well, but it is a little thinner than bristol paper. It is also made for markers, so it holds up well to lots of layering and blends well.
Here's some links to the products, if you're interested! Hope this helps!

Beautiful work. I especially loved the gold lighting effect here.
Thank you!
What was that white pen you used at the end please? Also thanks for his video, helpful information.
The white pen was the "Uniball Signo White Gel Pen". You can find the link to the item at the bottom of the "materials" section. Hope that helped!
What type of marker are you using at the end to make the white dots?! I would love to know!
The pen I'm using is the Uni-ball Signo white gel pen - you should be able to find the link to it in the description under the "materials" section! It's great because it goes on opaque really well!
I'm having a problem with coloring large portrait pages. I bought a few on etsy, and no matter how I try they streak. IE Mariola Budek, and Grazia Salvo. Could you show how to do a big skin area without streaking? Thanks
I totally understand what you mean. I can definitely do a video on it in the future!
I am new to alcohol markers and this is absolutely a great review. Blending has always been my issue esp if I only have Ltd colors available (more bold than lighter colors). I got the Arteza ones, which may not be the best (but affordable) compared to Copic you are using. Have you tested Arteza?
Glad it was helpful! Yes - I've reviewed many of the Arteza Everblend markers in past videos!
where do you get the colouring pages that you used?
These aren't coloring pages - they're drawings I've made ahead of time 😊 If you like the style, I actually do have coloring pages on my etsy shop which you can find here: www.etsy.com/shop/iiKiui
Does this technique also work with Caliart markers? (They are alcoholic markers but I’m worried that it won’t work) thank you!
Yes, they should! If they're labeled as alcohol art markers, these techniques should be applicable. 😊
what are you using at the end to add the white dots?
In this video, I'm using the Signo Uniball white gel pen (link in the description). It generally rotates between that one, Sakura Gelly Roll & Ohuhu white gel pen. :)
I just purchased some alcohol markers. Where would you suggest I begin in learning how to use these markers? I have very little practice doing art of any kind but I've always wanted to be able to draw or paint. I have no idea where to begin. I'm also interested in using them for graffiti type art.
I personally like to make a color card/chart of my markers because it helps to know what they would look like on paper compared to the cap color. Sometimes they're very deceiving! Afterwards, I like to do some exercises like in the video where I blend colors I like together. For the most part, alcohol markers work like normal markers with the exception of the ability to blend. Hopefully this video was able to help you! I also have another video on how to color smoothly with alcohol markers that might help too. Best of luck!
Does touch makers give blend markers too?
Yes, I have a few touch five markers and they blend well too 😊
Can you make a video how to blend with none alcohol markers? I am kinda sad that my faber castell/ connecting markers don't blend
I'll make sure to do some research and try to come up with a video on that subject :)
I just got a brand new pack of fine tip and chisel tip markers and now I have to ask my mom for brush tip markers too😅
Good luck! Fine & chisel markers works as well (I only used those in this video along with my "How to blend skin & blush" video), so don't feel like you are limited without brush tips!
Is knowone talking abt her drawing skills??? Ur so tallented!
Thank you so much! 😊
Hey, what markers are you using in this video? Are these copic markers? Im really curious
The materials I used are listed and linked in the description, but for the main coloring portion (blue dress), I used the Arteza Everblend markers to show you can blend without a brush tip since they're chisel & bullet tipped!
When you color why your overlap lines dont make the weird stripes with darker tones?? I mean whenever i try to color it would look like a 2nd layer with darker tone :(( Is it bcause my color base is too dark?? Pls let me know senpai ~
When I blend the two colors, I make sure the paper is still "wet" from the previous layer of marker. If your paper is still damp, then the marker has an easier time blending and not leaving streaks. I explain a bit more in my "How to Blend with Alcohol Markers (Pt.2)" video if you want to check it out!
And as you mentioned before, if you're trying to blend significantly different colors (ex. black and light blue) it will be more difficult to get a smooth blend without a middle tone color. Hope this helps!
The good thing about the markers is that the colour doesn't over lap and it's easy to blend
Yes, definitely!
A question for you. How long does it take for markers to dry out? I have some Winsor Newton Promarkers and they don't seem particularly juicy, for want of a better word. Are Copics just naturally wetter? Thank you, and l love your work. :o)
Thank you! Copics, in my opinion, don't feel very juicy either, however, perform better with layers. I've been using the artify markers a lot lately, and I believe I reviewed them last year. None of them have dried out yet and they don't come with refills. The one benefit to Copics though is that they have the refill option available, and if I feel like a marker is feeling particularly dry, I'll add some more ink to the marker. Hope this helps a bit!
@@SketchingwithRabbits It does indeed - thank you. :o)
Do you wet paper with alcohol or water?
By "keep the page wet" I mean keep the paper saturated with marker 😊 I explain this better in my "How to Blend with Alcohol Markers (Pt.2)" with examples. Hopefully that video will help you out!
when you say keep the page wet do you mean like what you would do for a water color piece?
When I say keep the page wet, I don't mean use water to keep it wet. For alcohol markers, the easiest way to blend it is to keep the page soaked in marker. In order to do this, I go over a section several times so there's lots of product. Then, if I want to blend another color, I will add it in. If you wait until the page dries, then it won't blend as easily and will create a hard line.
@@SketchingwithRabbits Thankyou! Great video by the way!
@@RowKSky You're welcome! Thank you!
@@SketchingwithRabbits Hello! great video. When you replied Row K. Sky you said to load the area with a lot of product to keep the area wet to allow easier blending, I can not get soft graduations of two colors. I just bought my first set of Alcohol Pens, Master Touch 24 pc set. I am using the Strathmore MARKER paper too. They have a chisel tip and a Bullet tip, not a brush as I see your has a brush tip. How can I get soft blends with my harder tipped pens? Thank you!
could you please tell me for grayscale what card stock I should use obviously gray but
The paper I'm using in this video is the Strathmore Bristol paper, but I'm not entirely sure what you're asking? Strathmore also has a toned gray paper, if that's what you're looking for. Sorry I couldn't be more help!
@@SketchingwithRabbits my husband was saying something about the pound as far as how dark
@@mkaiser9639 Ah, the pound for the paper describes the weight/how thick it is. The paper I use is 100lb, which is my personal preference for thickness. It holds marker ink well and doesn't bleed through, in my experience 😊
Ok so first my paper should be wet it goes like lighter to darker tone first a base colour den colour above tht again base color den final colour den base colour repeat this until it get blend ?? But in general how many times should i repeat???
It really depends on the markers, paper and how many colors you're blending to determine how many times you want to repeat. For example, in this drawing, I would say I went over the skirt 4 times in total, after applying all the colors. However, I was using a chisel tipped marker and this tends to require more layers to get a smoother blend. If I were using a brush tipped marker, it would take less layers to blend the colors more seamlessly.
@@SketchingwithRabbits thanks thts great information i have subscribed ur channel and hit the bell icon plz make more videos on alcohol based markers 🤗
You're very welcome! Thank you for subscribing and turning on notifications! I really appreciate it! I will absolutely make more videos with alcohol based markers! Please let me know if you have any suggestions for future tutorials!
Wait, by keep the paper wet do you mean like, with water?
In my following video, "How to Blend with Alcohol Markers Pt.2", I explain what I mean by "keep the paper wet". To briefly explain it, I mean keep the paper saturated with marker. Hope this helps!
Just wondering.... do you have any tips on reviving dried out markers that don’t have refills? Ta!!!
I've heard some people using regular alcohol to refill their markers. It will re-hydrate it, but it will also dilute the color since it's like adding a colorless blender to the marker. Hope that helps!
Thanks for your advice regarding “rejoicing” dried markers.
Sorry. I meant “rejuicing” dried markers!!!
You're welcome!
How about some mix media marker and color pencil
I use marker and colored pencils in some of my artwork! It works great on bristol paper or mixed media paper. I usually blend my markers first, then add colored pencils over as embellishments. If I add colored pencils before marker, the waxy texture doesn't let the marker soak into the paper.
@@SketchingwithRabbits in general does mixing those two media's does it cut down the time it takes to do a straight color pencil piece color pencil takes for ever . Your channel is way cool thanks for sharing your content
I'm new to these markers. Do they ever stain and transfer?
I've found that they will transfer onto another piece of paper if anything is laid on top/stacked. I tend to put a piece of scrap paper in-between my art pieces to prevent any staining. I have found red tones to be the most problematic as they leave a yellow stain on any page pressed on top.
As for transferring, I use these markers on bristol paper so it's really thick and I find it doesn't bleed through. I haven't had any issues with the marker transferring onto the next page when coloring, but again, I am using very thick paper. On sketch paper or thin paper, it will definitely bleed through, especially with a lot of layers. I hope this helped!
@@SketchingwithRabbits thank you, so much!! I'm very excited and your videos are definitely going to be a staple in my journey. ❤
Thank you so much! I hope my videos can be helpful to you and I wish you all the best on your marker journey! They're so fun to work with 😊
My daughter wants new markers for Christmas. She is 8. She is an artist. What would be the best marker for her. are ALCOHOL MARKERS too advanced or old for her? What marker would you suggest or recommend for a child her age who is used to creating paintings and things with all the various mediums, except ALCOHOL MARKERS
Hmm, I think alcohol markers can be great for kids. It'd be hard for me to judge if they're too advanced for her since children learn at different speeds! There are some really affordable sets out there. I'd suggest getting a set that has a chisel/fine tip since they're more affordable. Brush tips tend to be more expensive and if not taken care of or used properly, can fray or easily ruin the marker. I'd suggest the Parkoo Marker set of 80 to start off with. That should give her lots of colors to choose from and to see if she likes the medium! Here's a review I did of it if you'd like to see my honest review: bit.ly/3HO6uPf
I'm not sure what you're asking in your last question. Did you want suggestions on other mediums besides markers, or other marker types? The only other marker type I can think of is water-based, and those would be similar to Crayola and those types of brands. I hope this helps!
What should we use to wet the paper? Water?
What I mean by "wet the paper" is to keep the page saturated with marker. In order to "wet" it, just make sure your marker didn't dry before applying your next color. It should feel soft to the touch if it's "wet". Hope that helped!
@@SketchingwithRabbits Thanks😃
You're very welcome! :)
She is like the girl version of zhc thx for the tips... keep up the good woork
Thanks!
The feather stroke doesn't work with sharpies. Will try the other methods
I intended these tips to work more for alcohol markers similar to Copics, Spectrum Noir etc, so I didn't really consider sharpies as one. In my experience, I haven't had much luck blending Sharpies because of their fine tip and how quickly they dry, however, there seems to be other tutorial videos on CZcams that cover the topic.
I know I’m late, but I would like to know how you wet the page before coloring?
Hi there! I made a second "How to Blend with Alcohol Markers" video - it should be the video shown at the end. I explain it better in that video with an example, but to quickly put it - "wet the page" means to keep the page saturated with marker. Hope this helps! If it doesn't, feel free to check part two for a better explanation. 😊
@@SketchingwithRabbits thank you! This helps, but I’ll still check out the vid just so I get a good idea. Thank you again.
You're welcome! Happy to help!
Can make a vedio of how to ........ colour without wet paper??please.😇
In the video, I said to "keep the page wet" but it doesn't actually mean to use wet paper! In the second "How to Blend with Alcohol Markers (Pt.2)" video, I explain how to blend and color on regular paper. Hope this helps!
Which copics do you think are the bset
Copics or alcohol markers? For Copics, I like the Copic Sketch markers, but the Ciao come in second place! For alcohol markers in general, I still like Copics overall, but I also enjoy using the Spectrum Noir markers. As for a more affordable option, I like the Arteza Everblend markers as well.
@@SketchingwithRabbits I was thinking about artzea but i just wanted to know if i ever want to buy them
@@SketchingwithRabbits Oh and where would u find the Spectrum noir i cant find a legitamate website where they sell them
The spectrum noir markers should be linked in description of the spectrum noir review video, but their main website is "Crafter's Companion". If you go to the Spectrum Noir website, they have a button at the bottom titled "where to buy" that should direct you to where you need to go.
As I mentioned earlier, I like the Arteza markers as a more affordable option. They don't have a brush tip yet, but in this video I used the bullet and chisel tip to blend and I think they work fine. 😊 I end up using the everblend markers often because of their range of colors.
Wet paper?
I'm assuming you're referring to when I say "keep the paper wet". This doesn't mean actually wet it with water, but instead means keep the surface of the paper covered in marker. This allows for easier blending.
Could you make a tutorial on colouring skin with watercolour???
Absolutely! I'll be sure to cover it with the best of my abilities!
@@SketchingwithRabbits OH MY GOD ThANK YOU!!! Your channel ia amazing; you've helped me so much!
Thank you! I'm so happy to hear that!
@@SketchingwithRabbits No problem!
What about sketch book paper
Sketch book paper is a little tricky. It will definitely bleed because that paper was made for pencils and maybe pen, but not markers. I have a sketchbook and I _can_ blend markers on it, but it always goes outside the lines and it bleeds A LOT. I have at least 3 pieces of scrap paper underneath so it doesn't bleed onto the next page.
DUMB question-but how do you wet the paper?
If you watch my next "How to Blend with Alcohol Markers Pt.2", I explain it a little more clearly. Basically it means to keep the paper saturated with marker, which I show examples of in the next video. Hope that helps!
:D
Stop lying to me CZcams I know this already has views
Edit: apparently I'm the first comment haha
Maybe you were the first! 😊
I found this account while looking for Orange Peanut🤨
That's really random haha!
Does this work with any marker?
These tips work for alcohol based markers, so brands like Copic, Ohuhu, Arteza, Spectrum Noir, Winsor & Newton, Touch Five etc. Water based markers work differently and the same tips won't directly apply. Hope this helps!
Ok thanks
I was wondering because I don’t have Copic markers
No worries! Many people don't have Copics, and I have a very limited supply, so any alcohol marker works with these tips. :)
Ill watch a full video cuz my markers are alcohol markets called touch fighting
I've never heard of that brand before, but I hope the video was helpful!
Nobody:
Me: omg it’s Cinderella
Haha I was thinking that when I chose the colors for this piece! 😆
I put the colorless blender after the colors🤦♂️
There's no issue with that! I think it really just depends on the colors - I find using the colorless blender on darker colors make them look blotchy, but on lighter colors, it works really well!
It always looks like the colorless blender makes the colors blotchy. It completely ruins the look to me.
I agree, which is why nowadays, I tend to stay away from the colorless blender unless I'm trying to fade into the blank bage :)
My markers don't blend they just layer
If you're using alcohol markers and you're applying it when the marker is still wet, they should blend! However, if you're trying to blend two colors that are difficult to merge (for example, bright red and dark green), then they won't blend easily and will only layer. Hope this helps!
Thank you!!❤️
So you sat make sure the paper is wet. With what? Alcohol? Water? My pens are not at all wet
Hi Judy, please refer to my comment and the next video in this series: "How to Blend with Alcohol Markers Pt.2". I explain this more in detail since many people were confused. :) Hope that helps.
Bruh, it was that easy?
Hopefully it made it easier to understand! 😅
