आपल्या देशातील सुमारे ६५ टक्के लोकांच्या दररोजच्या आहारात भाताचा समावेश होतो. मानवी शरीरास पोषक अशा बऱ्याच अन्नघटकांचा पुरवठा हा भातातून होत असतो. तसेच इतर पिकांच्या तुलनेत पशु-पक्ष्यांचे खाद्य व औद्योगिकदृष्ट्या देखील भाताचे अनेक उपयोग होतात. त्यामुळे भात हे बहुगुणी तृणधान्य पीक म्हणून ओळखले जाते. याशिवाय हलक्या, भारी, पाणथळ, खारवट अशा विविध प्रकारच्या जमिनीत यशस्वीपणे वाढणारे व उत्पन्न देणारे भात हे प्रमुख तृणधान्य पीक आहे. महाराष्ट्र राज्यातील लागवड करण्यात येणाऱ्या अन्नधान्य पिकांचा विचार करता ज्वारी-बाजरीनंतर भात पिकाचा क्रमांक लागतो. असे जरी असले तरी कोकण, विदर्भाचा नागपूर विभाग तसेच कोल्हापूर, पुणे, नासिक, विभागाच्या सह्याद्रीलगतच्या भागातील लोकांचे भात हे प्रमुख अन्नधान्य पीक आहे. महाराष्ट्रात भात हे पीक “साळ” आणि “धान” या नावाने देखील ओळखले जाते.
