    I had a bad attitude with emulating mics and I hated the Slate that my friend had. I thought emulating mics don't have soul. After hearing everybody saying how freakin' amazing the Sphere is, I went and bought it. Now, it's one of the coolest things I've had. Just used it today in stereo mode for drum overheads and it's the best overhead sound I've ever recorded.

  • @bisibela
    @bisibela Před 3 lety +57

    to me its not about whether it sounds like the original mic.. its always about what sounds the best with a particular voice or sound source.. and being able to audition that many colors, make that change with a few mouse clicks and just move on with sound capture beats all the mic lockers in my world. Huge time saver!

    • @freethinksman4393
      @freethinksman4393 Před 2 lety +4

      Agreed! I have a few of the original large diaphragm mics and while the emulations are certainly close, I couldn't care less about how accurate they actually are. The emulations all sound good by themselves, but I would like the mic just as much if none of the originals were identified. They all sound great all by themselves. The ability to change the sound of the microphone in post without EQing and being able to change the polar patterns makes it a complete game changer for me. I do miss the discipline and forethought that came with having to commit to sounds to tape in the olden days (I've been a professional engineer for 32 years). It forced an engineer to really think about what was being captured, especially when multiple mics were bussed to single tape tracks. Limitations made engineers think about things that they don't consider any more until the mix. But sometimes it's amazing to have virtually unlimited tracks and unlimited processing. It lets the engineer take chances that he/ she might not have taken in the past. The Sphere lets you do that with mic positioning now. It's almost inconceivable! (and I do think that word means what I think it means) that you have that ability in post. It's like selecting what a photo should focus on after the fact. If I could swap all my large diaphragm mics for a closet full of L22s I can honestly say I would do it. In a heartbeat. Now I just hope they work on a small diaphragm version, a dynamic version, and a ribbon version! And if you're reading this Townsend- making all of the same models available for Pro Tools HDX that are available for UAD would really, really nice. I have actuallly considered purchasing a seat of UAD just so I could have more variation. Please!

  • @freethinksman4393
    @freethinksman4393 Před 5 měsíci +1

    Great review. The one thing to remember about modeling dynamic and ribbon mics is that the L22 is a condenser. It's not just different components that distinguish the mics. They operate using completely different acoustic principles. Head to head comparisons with other large diaphragm condenser mics is where the accuracy should really be judged. Full disclaimer: I have owned this mic for almost 3 years. I have a good mic locker with several other high-end mics it intends to emulate. I have been pleasantly surprised at how well it recreates some of them, but unless you're meaning to punch in over an existing track recorded with one of the mics it models, the accuracy is important only from the standpoint of marketing and proving it can sound like other mics. The fact is that regardless of how well it recreates another mic, the sounds available are simply amazing in and of themselves. The fact that I would use it to re-record parts of a take that was recorded on an an original isn't important. What is important is how good the mic sounds. What is even more important is what you can do with the recording in post. Being able to record in stereo, change the polar pattern to accommodate off axis sounds from other sources in the room makes this worth the asking price all by itself. I recorded a bluegrass band arranged in a large semi-cirle with the Sphere on a guitar next to a fiddle that was being recorded with a Royer 121. In post, the model of mic I had chosen for the guitar (the C-12 in cardioid) allowed some unpleasant honky sounding fiddle. With very little effort I changed the polar pattern to figure 8 and implement a low cut filter to diminish the proximity effect cased by that pattern. I still got to use the model I preferred, but was able to almost completely cut out the fiddle. I hadn't noticed it during tracking, and it saved my butt in the mix. I cannot recommend this mic highly enough.

    Best review yet. I replayed the mic comparisons while wearing headphones and could not tell much of a difference. If anything, some of the original Neumann mics had a slightly deeper tone than the L22 presets had.
    But WOW! This L22 is fantastic in the way it can emulate these original mics. Hell, it BECAME the mics and did it so convincingly. What a product! (that I can't afford, but still..)
    And the way that Bandrew was able to set the levels to match both mics was excellent. Great comparison and review!

      What I find with the 2 years of using the Sphere L22 is that adding little proximity (in software) helps get the generally more darker qualities out of recordings and perhaps even closer to the original mics. Also UAD Bill Putnam plugin has IMO even better mic emulations ... thoroughly impressed! Thanks Bandrew!!!!

    • @xaosnox
      @xaosnox Před 3 lety +9

      You can use only one of the diaphragms in the mic. However, it will not then work with the plugin, but it's just a great mic for the price-even if it only had one capsule. In order for it to accurately emulate all those microphones and not sound like that piece of crap from Slate, it has to pick up a 3D sound field. BTW, I think you're almost right about it being the best mic in the world right now. I'd say Soyuz 017 Tube is probably the best sounding mic in currently production if not ever. It is like a U47, ELA M 251, and C-800G had a threesome and the 017 Tube got all the best genes! The emulation on the L22 is pretty good, but so much of the character of that mic comes from the body design, and they can't quite capture that in a different housing. It's still one of my favorite emulations on the L22, though.

  • @BeauStephenson
    @BeauStephenson Před 2 lety +4

    I've watched this video a couple of times. When I'm in a treated studio space listening through mastering converters on really expensive monitors, I can hear the subtle, and not so subtle, differences between the L22 and the microphones it models. But sitting here on my apple airpods, I can't tell the difference at all on most of these. That's crazy to me. I really thought the differences were big enough that I'd really be able to tell on my airpod pros, but honestly I can't.
    A test I've done with the L22 in my studio is to run it through a matched pair of outboard preamps. To my ears, some of those little differences get a lot smaller going this route. You get a lot of life in the signal chain for the plugin to work with. The EQ and saturation seems to behave in a much more nuanced and subtle way.
    This is a fantastic mic.

  • @xaosnox
    @xaosnox Před 3 lety +7

    This is the review this mic deserves! Excellent job. I was surprised at how different the RE20 emulation sounded to the real dynamic mic. I would have thought they'd have obscured some of the detail and warmed it up a bit. I'm equally surprised at how well the L22 emulates the 416, considering the tremendous differences in build and style. They seem to have got that one spot on along with almost all the others. I love this mic! I don't see myself ever buying any other LDC. So far, I've had the L22 win out over a C12, a U47, and even a C800g in blind test during tracking. This thing is no joke. Erik, Chris, and Julian are doing as much to revolutionize modern recording than the entire team at UAD! Good on you, Spheroids!!
    [EDIT] In your Overall Thoughts section, you mention using it for VO. That's my primary use for this mic, and I've actually been able to bill a premium to send the raw stereo wav file from the L22 so they can use the plugin to get the sound that works best for the job. Hint: It's usually the Soyuz 017, which is probably the most amazing sounding mic of all the emulations available with the L22 and its best kept secret.

    I'm actually suitably impressed. I don't have $1500 for this mic but if I did, it's a no-brainer. First off thanks for doing this video! This mic is quite impressive. I once did a VO session and the studio used this microphone. It was quite impressive how closely it matches the original mics it tries to emulate.
    The only thing that I can noticeably and consistently hear when doing the side by side comparisons, is that the Townsend mic always seems to have a little high end or brightness punch when comparing side by side. But again, the software and some slight EQ can take care of that.
    Brilliant concept. Brilliant mic.

    One thing to note, even among the mics the L22 is emulating, it is very rare to find two that sound exactly the same. This is why pro recording engineers will tell you if you want to do true stereo miking or a Decca Tree with two or three mics of the same make and model, you really want to use mics that were all purchased at the same time. In short, the L22 might possibly sound exactly like at least some specimens out there. If you get a vintage mic that has been improperly modded, serviced, or had to be repaired, who knows what you are getting. And hey, they don't make vacuum tubes like they used to...Vintage mics are still cool, but the L22 is an ace up your sleeve.

      They aren't even in the same league. That's kind of like comparing a unicycle and an Humvee. The L22 holds its own in the best studios in the world and almost always get chosen over the “real” mic in blind tests when I take it to a tracking session. The L22 is worth 10 or 100 times the price. I’d pick a RØDE NT1 over the VMS in most cases. Seriously. It’s a better mic. Steven Slate’s business model is to steal lunch money from wannabes and he’ll openly joke about it off camera and I’m not afraid to say it. The team at Townsend Labs continue to work with the best companies, studios, and microphones in the industry to continue adding value to this already insanely valuable mic.

    its scary how close the L22 gets to the RE 20 sound, that goes for almost every mic you tested

    Cant wait till i can afford this beauty. In the end the consumer wouldnt say „hey he didnt use the original u87 on this track“. Biggest win also you can change the mic (tone characteristic color) instantly outside the booth without going in packing the first 5k mic away and smack the other 10k mic on. And so on. Its for much faster work and for more versatility in tone color and characteristic. This will be my first over 1k mic (sitting on the nt1a for recording and sometimes borowing the at2020 u87 or tlm103 from different friends when i can) great review thank you.

    Thank you so much for this! I am totally sold on this mic. Thanks to your review I don't have to sink all of my money into the U67 and will now be able to purchase more gear! At front address, the U67 is spot on. No set u67 sounds the same anyway and I got excited when I couldn't pinpoint a noticeable difference. at 90 degrees I heard a change but I will never record my vocals at 90. You are awesome. I definitely hit that Sub button!

  • @alan2a1l
    @alan2a1l Před 3 lety

    Wow. I’ve actually recorded on this mic for vocals in a studio. Not only do you get all this sexy emulation stuff, but, with its inline software compression, you can go from barely vocalizing to fff and it won’t clip. It’s a ridiculous “mic”. It can’t reject like a 416, but it does get the clean,
    clear sound. For music recording, I think it’s a no-brained. The engineer at studio I use for that purpose put the U-87 back in the case and uses the L22 exclusively. It’s just so much easier to use. He was riding gain, before, but now he lets the mic and its app do that work.
    If I were made out of money, I would cut off a limb or two for this mic. But hen I couldn’t hang it.

    This was a very informative and thorough review. The 57 sounded completely different in all addresses. The SM7B very similar dead on, but side and rear address no bueno. The U87ai also similar front on only, side and rear no bueno. The 67 doesnt sound very close to me. Everytime the L22 weirdness could be fixed with EQ. I wish I could hear the nicer mics like 251 or 800g. Thanks again for this excellent comparative analysis.

  • @Crivicus
    @Crivicus Před 3 lety

    I could see how this mic would be useful in a studio for overdubbing work allowing you to emulate the tone to match on-set mics without needing all of them to hand but to my ears the originals definitely do a better job at what they were designed for. The SM7B was much better at not picking up your voice from behind when you turned them for example which would make a difference in an interview podcast situation. I like the idea of the mic but I do agree with a couple of the other comments that on video it looks like a cheaper mic which is another downside and reason to only use it in a studio where it can be useful but not seen by an audience. Overall great video as ever Bandrew!

  • @BURTBROWN

    Very interesting comparison. What surprised me is the 416 and the Sphere. To my ears, they sounded extremely similar. I'm very familiar with and love the 416 as I worked with one for years during my time in L.A. radio. The U87 and the L22...... ZERO difference (to my ears) and that's a blind test tried several times over. Again NO DIFFERENCE from what I can hear. I'll add to that that I'm not comparing in a treated room with studio monitors or fine earphones - just a good desktop set of speakers. The similar sound quality could convince a number of people in getting the Sphere for half the price - PLUS a lot of other mikes to custom fit your voice! As for the $7000 Neumann compared to the L22, I BARELY heard (blind test) a very, very slight high end improvement with the L22 - almost insignificant! Would I buy the Sphere L22? You bet!!!! Like you said, the PROHIBITIVELY EXPENSIVE mikes are right there wrapped up into one compact bundle! I've always wanted to hear how good this mike was and now I know it's excellent. Anyone who is a pro and wants to compete with the big boys should consider this mike as opposed to the originals!!!!!!!!!! (They should also listen to your other tests of less expensive (well below the $1500 Sphere price) mikes in comparison to the big boys - some shocking bargin factors there!!!!) Thanks for the test!!!!!!

    • @Podcastage
      @Podcastage  Před rokem

      Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts. I agree that for the typical listener listening on speakers they will never notice the difference between this and the U87. They probably wouldn't even notice the difference between an AT2020 and the ELAM251. When we buy gear like this, it's to be a more effective tool for us to get our job done efficiently. That should lead to a better sounding recording that achieved quicker, and that's what we should be striving for, but expecting the average person to notice the difference when the majority of them listen through their phone speakers would be a waste of energy. I agree the budget mics out there can give people fantastic sound quality. Thanks again.

    This mic for recording, studio stuff is amazing!!! For podcast stuff it's overkill! You don't need more than an a SM7B+Cloudlifter or an EVRE20+Cloudlifter really! But for studio recording, this is an amazing piece of kit, and every studio should have one really! That's how good it is! It is THE BEST digital emulation mic out there! It's better than the Slate or Antelope mics for sure! Not by much mind you, for what it does, and the ability to use 2 mics makes it by far the better choice! And on top of that, overall, it sounds a little bit better than the other 2 for sound quality!

      It's not even worth the time, to be honest. They don't compare. Check this video out: czcams.com/video/7yMvjfIwKeU/video.html
      All three of the other mics are very close in detail, depth, character, etc., but the Slate sticks out like a sore thumb. It sounds cramped and awful. It was the only one I could easily say sounded massively different. They're not even in the same class. The Slate thingy is toy designed to steal lunch money from wannabe engineers. That's what Slate does. The L22 is not just twice the mic. It's hundreds of times more useful. The software is absolutely amazing, and they keep making it better. It's the best money I ever spent on kit. The couple of people I've known who've bought the VMS took a hit when they went to sell the junk. If you insist on buying one, there are usually lots of people wanting to get rid of them, so get it used! But I highly recommend saving/spending the extra money for the Sphere.

      I feel like you could say that about all the originals being compared against the L22 emulations. While the L22 did really good emulating the characteristics of all the different mics, it still had this weird mid thing going on, it was muddying the emulations kind of.

    • @LonelyBunker
      @LonelyBunker Před 3 lety +1

      @@somberone8259 This is exactly my experience when testing emulation mics. It doesn't seem like a big deal when just listening to shootouts, but once you start trying to mix a vocal recorded on one of these things, the mids just don't cut through. Any chance you can do a singing comparison of the townsend and classic mic's ? Thanks!

    Great video. I have a question about the dual function. When they record opera singers they usually use 2 to 3 mics. two of the same with a distant between them to give it a wider sound and often 1 small one in the middle for diction. Does this mic in dual give the same effect as it is used for opera singers? --- Normally when you double a voice it is a copy and that doesn't sound that well. With 2 mics there is always a delay from one to the other what sounds more natural. Just wondering if this mic does that

    Pretty darn good, and if you weren't flipping back and forth like that, you wouldn't be dissapointed in the sound. But theres an obvious difference in the top end always in the shootouts, with the emulations sounding a bit bright and spikey up on the silblance end. It's puzzling that with it being fairly audible, that the modelling process doesnt seem to pick up that difference and attenuate.
