  • I've finally gotten round to fitting a lovely set of twin HS4 carburettors to my classic Mini, and spent a day with a friend getting them tuned and balanced to get some decent performance out of the 1330 engine. Here's a quick start up with some exhaust noise and a bit of waffle thrown in!

    Always loved the mini and always made me proud to be British.
    I cried when the Italian Job wrote them off.
    Love your mini MiniCarJack.

      Cheers mate, it'll probably pale in comparison to the other cars on display (especially yours!), but I'm excited to come along and have the car on show - this'll be its first big event since Beaulieu last year when it still had its old wheezy engine fitted!

    Had an S years ago, got a MG metro engined mini now and doesent feel the same somehow.
    I think the lack of responsiveness is prob lack of the twins.
    How do you find the induction roar while on road ?
    and could you tell me what air cleaner that is ?

    • @bodgewell
      @bodgewell  Před 6 měsíci

      The induction noise is fantastic, one of my other videos might give you a bit of an idea, but the car also has straight cut drop gears which add to the noise even more. czcams.com/video/a72ZgIfOsTk/video.html
      It's running a RAMAIR foam filter with K&N stub stacks inside the filter.
      If you're running a HIF44 you should be able to get a decent level of responsiveness from a Metro engine, as long as everything is in good condition and the fuelling & ignition is dialed in (perhaps a tune from someone like AC Dodd could help). Twins can give a *slightly* sharper throttle response, but I doubt a pair of HS4s would offer any benefit over a HIF44 on a standard MG Metro-based setup.

    It looks great, can I ask what difference its made over the single carb?

    • @bodgewell
      @bodgewell  Před rokem

      It's made quite an immense difference in my case. Previously I was only running a single HS4 1.5" carb, which is very undersized for the spec of the engine - most big bore Minis run on 1.75" carbs. Going to twin 1.5s has unleashed its potential, throttle response is now fantastic, and the engine has really come to life. I'd probably get similar raw numbers from a single 1.75" like a HIF44, but the look (and sound!) of twins is great.

      @@bodgewell Thanks for taking the time... mine is running an Avonbar 1310 with a single carb. It feels starved to me and underpowered so based upon your reply I will look for a sensibly priced set of twins.

    • @bodgewell
      @bodgewell  Před rokem +1

      @@richardstamper5630 Do you know which model of carb you're currently running? It could be that, like with my old setup, you're running a single 1.5", but would massively benefit from upgrading even to a single 1.75" like a HIF44 if that is the case. That'd be simpler and cheaper than finding a good set of twins - I was lucky with mine, but they still needed some work. A "fast road" 1310 should get more than adequate fuelling from a single HIF44 so that's worth considering as another option to get more from your motor, it certainly shouldn't feel starved and underpowered as HIF44s are plenty adequate for engines up to (and somewhat beyond) 100hp. On the flip side, if it turns out you're already running a 44 and it still feels flat, your best investment would be in getting a professional tune from someone like AC Dodd as it'd transform the car with no need for any part upgrades (unless he finds something wrong with your setup and an item needs replacing to make it work to its full potential!). Of course I say all this despite running twin HS4s myself, but if I hadn't come across this particular set of twins for sale when I did, I'd have probably gone down the single HIF44 route.

    pistons? rods? crankshaft?

    • @bodgewell
      @bodgewell  Před 2 lety +1

      This engine is running Omega pistons (+60) with standard 1275gt conrods and reground crank - it's been built up with ARP fixings along with a reinforced center main strap and other upgrades like lightweight cam followers and MED pushrods

    • @bodgewell
      @bodgewell  Před 2 lety

      @@TheoXydias_PerlaCoffeeTrailer I think ultimately it depends on what you want to use the engine for, eg is it going into a daily driver or a full-blown race car? Regardless of that there are some upgraded bits which are probably always worth fitting such as a central oil pickup in the gearbox, but you won't necessarily need a multiple thousand-pound toughened crank in an engine which isn't making mega power

      @@bodgewell just road use i think with a 276 cam it will be ok i bought a straight cut gearbox 10 minutes ago from a friend on a very good price (new in box)

    • @bodgewell
      @bodgewell  Před 2 lety +1

      @@TheoXydias_PerlaCoffeeTrailer Sounds good - this engine has an SW8 cam in it, which I think is designed for a similar sort of 'usage' as the 276 profile you're looking at (ie, "fast" road). I find it starts to come to life properly above 3000rpm, which suits my driving style well as I tend to take the car out for spirited weekend drives on B-roads, so it doesn't see a lot of stop-start traffic. That said, on the odd occasion I have been stuck in a traffic jam, it's not undrivable by any means - I have the idle set around 1100-1200rpm now to make it a little easier.
