Just an FYI: the first use of the MetroCard cost the rider $5.00 and the second time cost $2.75 so you need to have at least $7.75 on the card before you use it. If you put at least $5.50 on the card (i.e., a round-trip fare using local bus or subway), you get an 11% added to the card's value. Therefore, when you put $7.00 on a card, the extra 11% adds $0.77 for a value of $7.77--enough to exit AirTrain and board a subway with $0.02 left on the card. MetroCards remain valid for a while so if you know you'll be returning, keep the card so you don't have to pay $1.00 for a new one--you can just add more money onto the old one. Also, you can't add any time-based value onto a card you buy at JFK. Once I got to Manhattan, I tried to add a 7-day unlimited use onto the card I bought at JFK, and I got an error. I tried another machine--same error. I bought a new card and asked MTA why this didn't work--they said it was because the cards at JFK are issued via the Port Authority of NY and NJ, which oversees the airports, bridges and tunnels, and is not associated in any way with the Metropolitan Transit Authority of NYC. You can add cash value to the card you buy at JFK. A 7-day unlimited costs $31.00 and lets you use subways and local buses (but not the AirTrain) as many times as you want/need for 7 days. At $2.75 a ride, that same $31.00 only gets you 11 rides. I didn't try this myself, but if you want to use a 7-day unlimited card around NYC, try buying THAT kind of card at JFK, and when you get the card, immediately add the $5.00 for exiting AirTrain (you won't get the additional 11%, but you won't need it). The first swipe will deduct that $5.00, and the second swipe won't deduct anything because you paid for unlimited use over 7 days.
I'll have to try that sometime. I always use the 7 day unlimited ride Metrocard when I go to NY. Even on a 4-6 day visit, I tend to swipe a card over 12 times. I usually fly into LaGuardia Airport & buy my Metrocard there before boarding a Q72 bus to get to Junction Blvd on the 7.

David Thaler is there another option? Im going nyc for 3 days. London to jfk then newark international back to london. So air train will be required on both occasions....plus the option to use metro card on busses trains subways ferrries etc.
I plan on using this when I'm older since I live 3 hours away from NY but JFK is the only local airport that does international flying everywhere. I'm from Delaware, I would use the Wilmington train station.
It is much safer and much faster to take the Airtrain to Jamaica Station and switch to the LIRR (Long Island Railroad). And it only costs a few dollars more.
That was very cool to see what the JFK Airtram does. Next time do it for the LIRR and if you can show that old LIRR station looks like from within. That would be awesome.
Yes, they do charge $5 to enter or exit at Jamaica station and Howard Beach station. Moving around terminals are free. We have access to the MTA bus from terminal 5, if you don't want to pay $5 for airtrain.
I’ve been traveling back and forth from Charlotte, NC to Brooklyn Heights fairly regularly, and I’ve been doing a similar trip, slight change though. Terminal 8, AirTran, but to Howard Beach, then the A train to Metro Tech or High Street.
I DO NOT recommend going via Howard Beach cuz there are less routes + not every A goes to Howard Beach. I waited 25 mins for the train cuz I missed one when I was making it down to the platform. But 4 trains on another side drove through.
As of November 1, 2019 the Air Train fare is $7.75. No more bonus on Metrocards. $1.00 fee added to purchase of new Metrocards. Only four riders can use a regular Metrocard even if more money is on a card due to the bus transfer limit of four users.
Did this last year. Jamaica was partly shut due to works so we were bused to another station on regular buses. It was hell with the luggage. Poorly signed and the most fragmented train system from airport to a major city I’ve ever seen.
Very helpful. I'm guessing that you wore some manner of helmet cam, and if so, you might consider a neck brace for your next video. ;-) Also, an on-screen narration of where you are going (and what signs to look for) would make it more clear. The airport is quite a labyrinth!

Love New York City its easy to get around that Jamaica station area it's save I have lived there and it's pretty save and its not the hood, the hood is a couple of blocks south. Just don't hang around alone looking like a tourist in the middle of the night and be with somebody.

You only need one Metrocard for everything in NY. If you load $7.75 onto one card that will cover one $5 Airtrain fare and one $2.75 subway fare. No need for multiple cards.

+ irishfever1 You can take the Q-10 bus from JFK Terminal 5. The bus connects to the A, J and E/F lines. If you purchase a MetroCard before boarding the bus, your fare will be $2.75 including the subway transfer. Be sure to check a subway map to see which subway line brings you to your destination.
The J train stop at 121 St is one short block from the Q10 stop at Lefferts Bl and Jamaica Av. The J/Z line map shows the 121 St stop as a transfer point for airport service.
Very late response, but… The E train from Jamaica is usually express in Queens and crosses into midtown Manhattan from east to west, before turning south. The A from Howard Beach is local in Queens, express in Brooklyn, and crosses into Manhattan’s southern tip. If you’re staying in midtown Manhattan, the E may be the faster ride. If you’re staying in downtown Brooklyn or downtown Manhattan, the A may be the faster ride. Amtrak doesn’t stop at either AirTrain station. However, the LIRR does serve Jamaica and will get you to midtown Manhattan a bit faster, and at higher cost, than the subway.

The only reason we have a high crime rate is because of tourists. In fact, if you look on the NYPD crime map, I think something like 75% of all crime happens in Times Square. Why is that? If you walk around with a map and a camera, it's literally the same as walking around telling people that your wallet is in your back left pocket and they can have it. Use a little common sense and absolutely nothing will happen to you. Don't keep your wallet in your back left pocket. Don't leave your backpack/luggage lying around out of sight.
I would , particularly if I were a woman, ride in the first carriage where the motorman is or the middle carriage where the conductor is. Stay in a well lit part of the station where there are many people. There should be plenty of people around at most stations at that hour of the evening. Don't flash your jeweler or money. Do be aware of your surroundings but don't stare. If something worrisome goes on you can get out onto the platform at the next stop and walk down a carriage or two and reboard the train or even wait for the next train.
MrYounggunxxx I would approximate your ride to take anywhere from 1-2 hours, depending on traffic and other delays; hopefully you will have a safe journey and may God bless you ! 😉😀
Don't listen to that first reply, they were stupid and decided to take a cab into midtown. If you take a cab, yes, it can take up to three hours. Never take a cab unless you have a ton of luggage. Airtrain + LIRR would be about 35-40 minutes. Airtrain + E train would be about 40-50 minutes.

If I need a new metrocard to use the subway, do I need to buy a metrocard for the airtrain ticket and another for the subway or can I use just one card for both?
You only need one Metrocard for everything in NY. If you load $7.75 onto one card that will cover one $5 Airtrain fare and one $2.75 subway fare. No need for multiple cards.
I love NYC but the subway station shown in the last part of this video looks freaky and creepy with those thugs and hoodlum looking men in heavy jackets. I notice that the security system is so untight.

+ irishfever1 You can take the Q-10 bus from JFK Terminal 5. The bus connects to the A, J and E/F lines. If you purchase a MetroCard before boarding the bus, your fare will be $2.75 including the subway transfer. Be sure to check a subway map to see which subway line brings you to your destination.

The J train stop at 121 St is one short block from the Q10 stop at Lefferts Bl and Jamaica Av. The J/Z line map shows the 121 St stop as a transfer point for airport service.
Has anyone here done the Airtrain to the Howard Beach subway station to Manhattan? Is it any faster than Airtrain to Jamaica to the subway or Amtrak?.

The E train from Jamaica is usually express in Queens and crosses into midtown Manhattan from east to west, before turning south. The A from Howard Beach is local in Queens, express in Brooklyn, and crosses into Manhattan’s southern tip. If you’re staying in midtown Manhattan, the E may be the faster ride. If you’re staying in downtown Brooklyn or downtown Manhattan, the A may be the faster ride.
Amtrak doesn’t stop at either AirTrain station. However, the LIRR does serve Jamaica and will get you to midtown Manhattan a bit faster, and at higher cost, than the subway.

I enjoyed this look at how you should get to Manhattan from JFK. I liked it very much, especially traveling on the Airtrain. Are any of these videos available on DVD? I know I can't download CZcams videos onto a blank DVD because of copyright issues. I wish CZcams would start a new service in the near future, in which you pay to download videos onto DVD.

The only reason we have a high crime rate is because of tourists. In fact, if you look on the NYPD crime map, I think something like 75% of all crime happens in Times Square.
Why is that? If you walk around with a map and a camera, it's literally the same as walking around telling people that your wallet is in your back left pocket and they can have it.
Use a little common sense and absolutely nothing will happen to you. Don't keep your wallet in your back left pocket. Don't leave your backpack/luggage lying around out of sight.

I would , particularly if I were a woman, ride in the first carriage where the motorman is or the middle carriage where the conductor is. Stay in a well lit part of the station where there are many people. There should be plenty of people around at most stations at that hour of the evening. Don't flash your jeweler or money. Do be aware of your surroundings but don't stare. If something worrisome goes on you can get out onto the platform at the next stop and walk down a carriage or two and reboard the train or even wait for the next train.

During non-rush hour, I have made the trip in 42 minutes or so.
Don't listen to that first reply, they were stupid and decided to take a cab into midtown.
If you take a cab, yes, it can take up to three hours. Never take a cab unless you have a ton of luggage.
Airtrain + LIRR would be about 35-40 minutes.
Airtrain + E train would be about 40-50 minutes.
