  • The little Rio S. Back for 2023 and at least one more model year. A fun little car with a surprising amount of interior space. Thank you to Ciocca Kia for allowing the channel access to this vehicle for review.

    I ordered a 2022 hatchy and it took 5 months to arrive. Definitely worth the wait for the MSRP price. 40-45 mpg on the highway easy. Simple with some tech. Drove 800 miles for a trip and spent less than 100$ in gas. Oil changes are simple too.

    Nice thorough review! Rio seems like a very appealing budget car. I like the European-inspired exterior (looks a bit like a Golf) and the roomy interior for how small it is. It sounds like it's a competent performing vehicle and very practical. Just what I need.

    As a big fan of small cars, it's very disappointing to see how affordable subcompact vehicles are disappearing from the US auto market. I was upset when Honda discontinued the Fit as I was planning to upgrade my 2013 Fit with a newer model one day. Aside from the fact that it's absurd to spend $40k+ on a vehicle even if you can afford to (most people who do can't), cars nowadays are overly computerized, way bigger than most people need on a daily basis, take up too much space, and as a result of their size and weight are more dangerous than ever to pedestrians and cyclists.
    I will say I do not care for subcompact sedans nearly as much as their hatchback counterparts which feel not only more upscale to me, but also way more practical. I like the Rio hatch, but to anyone considering buying one I would point out that the 2023 Chevy Bolt EV has an MSRP of $26.5k and for now qualifies for the $7500 tax credit, which seems to make it a more attractive choice unless for some reason an EV isn't a good option for you. Or, if you can afford to spend just a little bit more and don't mind the unconventional styling, the Kia Soul has much better specs & tech and is still a very affordable and practical hatchback.

    • @palebeachbum
      @palebeachbum Před rokem +4

      I couldn't have said it better myself! Though I will say I looked into the Bolt EV, since I'm an urban/suburban dweller and it's a no-go situation. I live in a city of over 1mil and the charging network is terrible. A lot of unhappy EV owners who say it's very inconvenient and time consuming due to all chargers being located at private business who may or may not allow non-patrons to use them. They are also often out of order and some businesses charge a $10/hr parking fee to use the charger. It's mess. Stick with a Rio.

    I got the 2023 Rio S Hatchback Silver with Technology package about a month ago. Driven about 600 miles so far, really like it! Smooth ride, nice features, push button start, alloy wheels, LED headlights, etc. Great gas mileage too, my freeway mileage for shorter city trips is averaging 45-50mpg! Haven't taken a longer road trip yet, but I bet the gas mileage would be well over 50mpg. Pretty good for an all gas vehicle! Someday I want a hybrid or electric, but for now this is a great car! I recommend the Rio!

    0:42 News Flash! Those are NOT Projector Beam Headlights! They're just simple old school halogens and they're actually pretty pathetic when driving in the country, but O.K. when driving in the city with street lights. I applaud Kia for ALWAYS having the headlights AND taillights come on in low light conditions as soon as you put the vehicle in gear, EVEN if the light switch is set to the OFF position. Bravo Kia. I see so many people driving around at night with only daytime running lights up front and no lights out back. I can't actually blame them because their dashboard is fully lit, BUT this is now true in the daytime on modern cars.
    Perhaps you were also unaware that these "Low Trim" level Rios have rear drum brakes, which is actually great for those who live in Salt Laden winter road conditions. Rear disc brakes corrode away VERY quickly in the Rust Belt.
    It is INTERESTING to see the differences between U.S. and Canadian Models. I have a 2023 Canadian Rio base model, called the LX here and mine is even equipped with a 6 speed manual transmission rather than the CVT, which was a shock to my dealer as they hadn't seen one so equipped in over two years. My Rio is on a 4 YEAR LEASE so leasing is still in effect, at least here in Canada although the leasing company is Hyundai.
    Something I have been unable to discern totally is whether or not this newer 1.6 liter engine has Direct Injection or not. I KNOW for sure that it has Multi-Port Injection BUT if you look at the engine closely you will see that there are actually TWO injectors per cylinder. Toyota uses "Dual Injection" technology to eliminate the horrendous issues caused by stand alone Direct Injection, related to carbon fouling on the intake valves. Bravo to Kia if they've followed suit.
    The Rio appears to be a VERY solid offering at this price point but a couple of minor upgrades would be appreciated. That light which you pointed out in the trunk is useless at night in that totally Black environment. It really needs a 6,000 Kelvin LED lamp back there. Such lamps would also be appreciated in the dome lights.
    I've found ride quality in the Rio to be surprisingly good for such a short wheelbase vehicle. The standard entry level sound system is also really decent.
    Overall, I'm really pleased with my decision to choose this Rio as a "2nd vehicle" which I treat as a simple Run-A-Bout when my wife needs our other vehicle, a 2022 Kia Niro PHEV, which we both absolutely love!
