    Very nicely filmed and described. I haven't tied a fly in decades, so it delights me to see the makers now offer barbless hooks. Mashing barbs flat was always my first step in tying a fly. I wonder how many times I did that.

    His underbody looks better than my finished flies 🤣 actually I'm really happy with where I'm at. Learned about 25 years ago when I was 13 and was obsessed with it for 5 years. Joined the military and forgot about it. Recently picked it up again and it's like I never quit. Thank God for these youtube videos though. Makes tying so much easier than when I first learned from books😂 so many little tips and tricks that would take years of practice to figure out on your own.

    Awesome fly! I'm hesitant to give suggestions to a master like Charlie, but am going to do it anyway. I totally hear you about losing patience waiting for things to dry. I recently discovered (thanks to my wife) the world of UV cure finger nail polishes. The black one is phenomenal for perdigon wing cases. I especially like that it is thick and creates a nice bulbous, ready to burst, wing case. An $8 dollar bottle from the local "W" store will do hundreds of perdigons.

    Compton is full of good tricks and tips. I’m glad he is only 20 mins from my house. Typically when I tie quill bodies I just stick the quill in my mouth for a min and then tie in and go.

    I've noticed so many of the perdigon flies out there that, to me, seem like they have a disproportionately large bead. Is it me, or is there a wave of using large beads? It doesn't look quite balanced, to me. Your fly bucks what I see out there, and your bead is proportioned perfectly. Of course, that's what I would expect from a Charlie Craven tied fly... :-)

    • @icedaft
      @icedaft Před 4 lety +1

      The big bead is made to fish in very deep pools with small flies. Its useful on warters with hig fishing pressure. In this kind of waters, some Trouts or Graylings will refuse any big Nymph...
      For size 14, i tie from 2,5 to 3,8 mm.

    Have you tried running a permanent marker along the edge of the peacock herl before tying?

    • @icedaft

      I noticed that some well known companies sell Chinese Hooks with their own Label, so it buy my Hooks directly from China. The quality is good...

    • @chuckstranahan5600
      @chuckstranahan5600 Před 4 lety +3

      @@icedaft Maybe... or maybe not. You'd think the quality is good until a big fish pretzels one of them. Pay what they cost and fish with the best hooks you can find - and they ain't Chinese!
