  • Low Rider ST. I get to ride the Harley Davidson Low Rider ST with the 117 engine for the very first time and give my impressions of it.
The Low Rider ST has been a bike that has been recommended to me on numerous occasions as it is on the Softail chassis, it has saddlebags.
And in many way is the natural step up from the Sport Glide which I already ride.
So will the Low Rider ST from Harley Davidson with the 117 cubic inch engine be the step up in power that I hope it would be or different enough from what I already ride?

I have a stage 2 on my SG and it goes as hard as the low rider sts I have ridden. I currently looking at fitting the same fairing to my Sporty. I think you are better off upgrading the 107 to a stage 2 or stage 3. The sportglide is a great bike.

Your comparison to the Sport Glide is spot-on. You had all of the reasons why I chose the Sport Glide over the Low Rider. I also preferred the forward controls and the rake that came with the Sport Glide. And I also did the stage two and changed the fairing, it's a perfect bike for me.

  • @chrislecouteur2360
    @chrislecouteur2360 Před 11 měsíci +3

It needs forward control's and a v&h exhaust it opens up the power there's a MASSIVE difference, the fairing does make it feel slow fall, stiff up the suspension its to soft ... I got a low rider s because of the faring and got a set of soft panniers at 1k as they are bigger than the box ones plus 2k cheaper lol ... Alf great video 👍

The Low Rider ST has great aerodynamics, and handling. That fairing is fabulous. What sucks about the Low Rider ST is the dash; looks like a cheap calculator display from the early 1980s... unacceptable.

@Dzinbhudist , once you've had a full TFT color touch display (like my Pan America Special, RA1250S) a clean 1980s cheap a$$ calculator display just doesn't cut it. The Low Rider ST is a great motorcycle... but for a premium bike produced in the 21st century, it's tech is whoa-fully lacking.

Yip....agree with about all of what you said.

I haven't ridden one yet. Every time I get on one I feel like I fell in a toilet with the seat up. Bars are also ridiculously tall for me. I'm not clear why "of course" one should have to $25k for a bike and then pay extra to carry a pillion somewhere, but if this is how they've managed to change the expectations of their customers, I'm probably not going to be a future customer.
I could really care less if people want to spend and extra $7k or so for the bragging rights of going 2 tenths of a second faster in the quarter mile, but give me the 107 with all the stuff on it I need to use it and proper riding position for $7k less. And spare me the silly Billy Badass ergonomics. I draw the line at having to rebuild the SOB just to make it mildly useful for more than stoplight banditry and scowling.

Alf, you’ve tried out many a bikes, my suggestion is: your bike is awesome!! keep it just upgrade a few things such as: put a stage two in it, upgrade the suspension front and rear, I agree with you the clam shell bags suck, look into advant black, they have some awesome bags, you might have to go into a two into a one exhaust tho, but there bagger bags look awesome. Anyway my .02 worth, why start all over with another bike when you love the one you have just do a few more mods and change it up some.

Another great non-review of the bike, Alf. 😂😂 I test rode a stage 2 LRS with a 2into 1 Bossani pipe… bloody awesome. Pulled like a train, but I had the same problem with the agility and the riding position. Different story with my Heritage, which is nimbler and more comfortable than the RKS… for me…. And that’s why we all love different aspects of Harleys. Great vid again, Alf.

Trade it! It's perfect for you! Don't leave Harley Davidson. I've owned 25 new motorcycles and I always come back to Harley. Yes, they're not perfect or the best and I believe that simplicity keeps them reliable. The torque is also so hard to replace. I agree with you the Sportglide has a unique ride. Keep your bike and keep upgrading your bike. Great review and you're right it isn't a huge difference in performance........

Fair call Alf. The LR ST like you mentioned is a similar concept to your current SG and the M8 in any guise I think from 107 through to 117 is good regardless of cc's... Any well tuned stage 2 is ridiculously strong... The best modification I made to my Street Bob was one of the cheapest. I had the dealer fit a 2 inch spacer made by Kodlin, to the factory shock (from memory it fits almost all the current softails). It has sharpened the handling significantly, given the bike more ground clearance, improved the ergonomics and made it a whole lot more fun and easier to manoeuvre at any pace. Interestingyou mentioned how the LR felt like it transitions from side to side slower than the SG 🤔Im assuming that could be attributed to the narrower and higher handlebar higher found on LR. How about you try a Road Glide next ? 😉😁😁... I'm a bit swooned by the looks of that model. Love the shark nose fairing and the fact it's the model used in the "King Of the Bagger" race series. Just throw on some Ohlins height adjustable shocks and fork internals 👌

I'm enjoying watching you test a wide variety of bikes. However, you seem to really like your "heroic" Sport Glide. Unless it has over 50K on the odo (miles OR km), you'll be better off financially AND get more "seat-of-your-pants" satisfaction from some performance upgrades. As I've commented before, my 2019 FLDE Softail Deluxe with a Stage II and suspension upgrades front and rear is a rolling rocket. Moreover, I believe you'd generate a lot more interesting content by documenting upgrades than by trading into a new ride. Either way, enjoy the journey!

I prefer the Road King... I have a 107 SG, which I love. I think these engines are getting way too big. Bigger displacement on a HD equals excessive heat. If I were going for a softail, I would go with the Heritage Classic. A nimble bike with great power to weight ratio. It sounds like you will be upgrading your current ride. If you are looking for cheap power, a good tuned stage 1 will do the job. If you are looking for even more torque and/or horsepower, a good cam with a good aftermarket tuner would be the trick. It can get very expensive increasing the power, especially if you have to pay someone to do it. And sometimes, finding an experienced and good mechanic can be difficult. It can also be difficult finding a good dyno technician. I have seen poorly tuned engines from dyno dudes who think they know what they are doing. Best of luck :-)

IF... $$$ was no object, I would buy a Low Rider ST Fast Johnny model as I love the look and paint scheme yet I know I would double regret getting rid of my SportGlide.... Last winter I had an upgrade done to my 2018 Sport Glide. I had a 114 with a stage 3 done. so yup I think I would pick it over the LRST now. The bags just suite the Sport Glide better creating a better look, forward controls are perfect (so that would need to be changed on the LRST) and when I think of all the little things I have done to my SportGlide over the past three years of ownership, I just can't justify the $$$ to start from scratch again with a bike that is as you suggest kind of too close to the Sport Glide yet its not a Sport Glide. so I'm sticking with my Zwarte Kers for now, she treats me right and I love every ride I have with her.

How strange ... I rode this actual bike today and the steering is still pissed plus the clutch bite point is way too close to the handlebar.
I didn't care for the riding position (I currently own a 107 RKS ) and the engine was pinking really badly. Yes I know it was hot today (30 plus degrees) but pinking is something that my own bike didn't and doesn't do in the same heat.
I remember riding a 117 Low Rider S about 16 months ago and being quite impressed with the performance of the stock bike. At this time I was Harleyless but I now own a Stage 2 RKS (all Screamin Eagle upgrades) and I have to say that my motor feels smoother and not lacking in power against the stock 117
I reckon doing a Stage 2 on a 107 is the way to go 👍
