    Congrats on 9 years! Here's a question: is there a character from a classic novel you'd like to write a sequel or prequel about?

  • @LedgerAndLace
    @LedgerAndLace Před 2 měsíci +5

    P.S. On the Patreon: I think people who don't do videos have no idea how much time, energy and effort go into recording and maintaining a channel. They see the finished video that is 20 minutes and don't consider the research, the prep, the recording, the editing, the uploading and any graphics that go along with it. It's fun but it's work!

    • @katiejlumsden
      @katiejlumsden  Před 2 měsíci +3

      Editing is definitely the very time consuming thing for me! Sometimes, for a longer video like my reflections on Dickens book, editing and proof-watching takes me about 3-4 hours.

    Congratulations!!! I've always wondered what a day in your life looks like and if they're all structured and organized or if you do follow your vibes through a day. And in parallel to that question when you write a novel or a story do you know the outline and structure first or do you write as you go and see what happens.

    Congratulations! Question: How do you always deliver your video content so precisely and accurately without umms, uhs, and pauses? Do you make notes or read them from a screen or prompter? As a BookTube creator I’m always in awe of how articulate and interesting and flawless you are! 😊

    I think that was really well explained about how Patreon could help you do more with your CZcams videos. I have heard other people say things like “my patrons pay so that you can watch this for free”. That sounds like nonsense to me, but probably they mean the same as what you said. As for the Q&A, I’m interested to hear more about the specifics of your free lance editing. (I know that is not actually a question haha)

    Question: what are some of your favourite Edwardian books?
    What is a book you read a long time ago, barely talk about, but love?

    Congratulations on 9 years! I found your channel a few months ago and I wish I had discovered booktube sooner! I love your videos and have been participating in the Dickensalong as well. I will definitely support you on Patreon. I'm not a very big reader of historical fiction, but I'm open to trying it. Thank you for all your hard work!

    I think what you're doing with patreon is great! CZcams takes up alot of time, I cant wait to see what videos you are able to create as a result of patreon.
    Q - what historical fiction book would you recommend to someone just getting into the genre

    I apperciate that you care so much to balance what you put behind a paywall. I have also thought that way, I make videos for people to watch and interact and give their thoughts to.
    I am really excited for this to give you less stress and more time to dedicate to videos.

    Are there characters from one story that you would like to have seen in another story or you think would add so much to another story?

    Q: When you are writing your novels, do you write longhand ✒ or on the computer 💻 and what programme do you use? Are you on pc or Mac?
    When you edit someone else's novel, is it printed or on the computer?
    Thanks and best of luck with your Patreon. ❤

    Congratulations on your 9 year anniversary. You were my introduction to BookTube and I think many other creators here, started by watching your content. I started watching your videos because of Dickens, I have a long term goal to read all of Dickens' novels, there now remains just three for me to read: Barnaby Rudge, Nicholas Nickleby and The Mystery of Edwin Drood... my favorite so far is David Copperfield, I know yours is Our Mutual Friend, which is also great.

    • @katiejlumsden

    YAY for 9 years! Here's my question: Have you ever thought of taking a classic novel and translating the characters and plot into a modern setting? And if so, which one(s)?

    • @katiejlumsden

    You are too sweet. You don't need to feel bad or apologetic for anything non-patreon members are missing. I completely understand why you feel that way, but Tristan and the Classics and Benjamin McEvoy are proudly saying all the benefits their book club members get in every video. So go for it! ❤
    Q&A question: Which classics have you not read yet do you most want to read?

    • @katiejlumsden

    For the Q and A: I haven't read a lot of Gaskell but I was a bit taken aback to see you place her above Hardy in your favorites list (though it was by only a single rung, I believe). I've read Hardy's 14 novels, as well as all the stories and much of his poetry. I'd heard Gaskell 's Ruth compared to Hardy's Tess and read Ruth for that reason. While I much liked Gaskell's writing in that book, found her especially strong in the last part of the book, and the ending quite powerful, I didn't consider Ruth to be in the same league as Tess overall, Tess being superior in the most important ways. I then read a good portion of North and South but immensely preferred Ruth to that and in the context of those two books found Hardy to be clearly the better artist and writer. That's saying a lot in favor of Hardy because I really liked the last part of Ruth. My question is, what were your criteria for placing Gaskell above Hardy... Thanks for making this channel. It's a good one.

  • @harmonyln7
    @harmonyln7 Před 2 měsíci

    A couple of questions really. How did you get into editing and proofreading? Also what enspired you to write your own books? I could ask lots more, but then no one else will get to ask. In terms of youtube channels, I find I spend more time making notes and editing than I do on the filming and replying to comments. Then again I have much smaller channels, with 88 subscribers on this one and 17 subscribers on my book/reading channel.

    • @katiejlumsden
      @katiejlumsden  Před 2 měsíci

      Thanks for the questions! Editing is definitely very time-consuming for me, especially as I'm not very eloquent, so I have to do a lot of editing! Some videos take a long time to plan for me, and some don't - that depends a lot on the video.

  • @ronciego9249

    Can you do an Editing vlog? It’s interesting how editors do their jobs

    • @katiejlumsden
      @katiejlumsden  Před 2 měsíci +1

      I'll have a think if there's a way I could do this - it would be tricky to do an editing vlog without talking specifically about the book I was editing, and I'm not sure that's entirely fair on the author/if they or the publisher would be comfortable with that. But I could make a video talking about how I edit in a lot more detail, so let me have a think!

    Hey Kate - I hope you're not becoming a work-a-holic. I knew this chess guy a bunch of years ago - John - eventually he earned the title of GM with a brilliant tournament win in Philadelphia. It was grueling event - two weeks without a single day off. Anyway, after he won a mutual friend gave him a lift back to Manhattan. When they got there what was the first thing he did? He took out the board and pieces and started studying chess. Watch out for work-a-holicism. I enjoy your channel, so thank you but I don't think there's a question in here right now : )
