- Inspired by Oddworld Inhabitants own Abe's Exoddus The Movie from 1998, I decided, out of curiosity, to see if I could cut together the cutscenes of the Oddworld games created by Lorne Lanning to create a concise story that makes sense by itself, standing on it's own, comprising the stories of Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee, Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus and Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee.
Though, the main reason I did it was due to me starting to 'restore', as I seemingly put it, some Odd World footage of cut scenes of the original games and Munches Odyssey to see how good quality I could get it. I was quite impressed how various methods can make the footage much clearer detail and smoother FPS rates than I'm used to watching them in and remember while watching the bit of the Mudokon drinking Soulstorm Brew from Director Phleg thinking 'man, you could create a film with this quality'. I mean, don't get me wrong, it's not like insane quality by any means but compared to what it used to look like on PS1 I'd say it's a pretty good improvement. I started putting it in my videos and a few people have had the suggestion that I upload the footage. So I decided to put this plan into play, as if I'm gonna release it all in one go I wanted to at least do it somewhat creatively!
That being said, it sounds like quite a simple task but in reality was a far bigger project then just splicing clips together. Took me like a month to do this, somehow. Altogether I wouldn't be surprised if I spent at least 40 hours rendering footage. Bare in mind though, that I've used as much of the original footage as I can, but there are a lot of scenes where I didn't have it in high quality and don't currently have a method of getting this. As a result, I used a lot of footage from Oddworld: New N' Tasty to fill in the gaps. But that's where a lot more of the time was spent making the film, as I somewhat heavily edited the footage of Oddworld New And Tasty in order to make it have a grittier and darker tone, both to match the original games and also just because a critcism of the New N' Tasty movies were that they were too bright and colourful, in comparison to Oddworld Abes Oddysey. That being said, the New N' Tasty films were really great and added a lot more that wasn't in Abe's Oddysee, like the extensive scenes of Paramonia and Scrabania which I really enjoyed a lot. I find it a shame that I didn't have much Oddworld Abes Exodus footage and as a result it plays a significantly smaller part of the story of this film.
Anyway, though, as I've previously said, I wanted Oddworld The Movie to stand on it's own. What I mean by that, is I wanted to, with this fanfilm, tell the story of Oddworld in a way that makes as much sense as it can to someone who's never played an Oddworld game. Not that the games don't make sense or anything but they are games and that's how the story was designed to be told with these cutscenes, meaning I had to be really careful how I cut it together to ensure there's as few blank spots in the story as possible, that are normally filled in via gameplay. As a result, I made tons of changes, even ones that are potentially easy to miss.
Well, the story as it's displayed in this Oddworld Movie (or at least how I tried to make it be based on how I cut it) is basically as follows: Oh wait, I just realised I forgot to mention the opening scene. Yeah, so basically I wanted this nice cinematic Computer Generated Imagery shot of the planet Oddworld to start off the film.... alas I am terrible at CGI and so you get that weird shot at the beginning. But as I knew it was gonna look terrible I made it more 'artistically interesting', as in whereas I originally planned to have like a generic 'pan and zoom into the planet' type shot, I decided to add more to it. There's symbolism there and it represents something, though I'm not going to say what because that kind of ruins the point of symbolism. Anyhow, I couldn't be bothered to make it look any better and just left it in mainly for audio reasons I think. So, anyway, the film starts off with the same story as Abe's Oddysee. Abe escapes. Then the opening of Munch's Oddysee. Munch gets captured. Then Abe sees the moon, falls, dies and is revived by Big Face who gives him visions. During these visions, while Abe's mind is open, many entities visit him. The Three Weirdos tell Abe about Necrum and what the Glukkons are doing with Soulstorm Brewery and the Mudokons. Then Abe gets a vision (maybe) of what's going on with Munch. Then Abe wakes up, has to do the trials, etc. Which, by the way, the indication with Munch is that Irwin is like 'I'm gonna get Munch's lungs', then later we see Munch being transported to Humphrey who puts the sonar in and Irwin is like 'wth I was gonna get his lungs'. Anyhow I'm running out of space so I'll wrap this up. Scenes show Abe entering each temple, then sees Sligs desecrating. Abe, Munch get power. Abe destroys Soulstorm Brewery. Then RF. Ok bye.

I decided to make a fan film, or fan cut rather, using footage of Oddworld that I've tried to make as high quality as I can, to see if I could put together a film that stands on it's own in terms of telling the story for Oddworld.
I go into more detail in the description, but a couple of things to note:
1. The opening shot looks terrible because that was my attempt at CGI lol.
2. I've tried to use as much of the footage from the original games as I could (without it not making sense in context). Any scenes that are missing (like a lot of Exoddus) or where I've used the New N' Tasty versions instead are where I didn't have the original footage in high quality.
3. Stranger isn't in it because, whereas Abe and Munch's stories meet at some point, Stranger's is completely separate and so it would be like an unrelated story told alongside it. I was thinking of putting him in as a cameo reacting to one of Lulu's 'NOOO's but I didn't find a shot of Stranger that felt right for that.
4. It's not remotely perfect and there's tons I'd have liked to do to improve it. But I'm quite pleased with it in it's current state and am quite 'burnt out' from spending so long on this project. I know a lot of it doesn't add up or feels sudden (tbf some of that is how it is in the games, like the Almighty Raisin's introduction) and there's tons of continuity mistakes, but it is what it is. I've done the best I feel I could with what I had to make a standalone film that hopefully somewhat makes sense on it's own. Hopefully someone may gain some enjoyment out of it. :)

I had originally intended to upload this on the 31st of December as I thought it'd be a nice video to end 2021 off. Unfortunately, I just didn't finish it in time. But, ultimately, I think that's a good thing because, in the time between then and when I uploaded this final version, I thought of and added so much stuff to it and made some of my favourite changes to it.

Was originally intended to be the final version, but luckily the Scrabania temple scene (which ironically is now my favourite scene in the final version) was out of sync, which prevented me from uploaded this original version. I made multiple improvements with the additional time that I had.
Do you remember that Lorne said: Abe basically kidnaps Munch in the beginning so Munch hates Abe in the early experience.
And of course, Vykkers Labs: "If we didn't test it on Fuzzles, we'll test it on you!" *laughs*

I always feel bad for Lulu. The dude basically got pulled into something he wanted no part in and was never involved in to begin with, and had his life destroyed in the process.
Yeah I feel the same way! We never really see him do anything particularly bad, yet it feels to me like he loses more than anyone lol.

Yeah it absolutely is! I was comparing the New N Tasty versions with the original a couple of days ago and am just amazed at how the original still somehow, in my opinion, looks so much better. I'm not even sure why exactly, it just somehow looks way more realistic even though it was done with technology that was over a decade older.
@@pupbenny I think due to the fact that the old oddworld games were gritty and a lot darker, portrayed a different feeling then new n tasty. It's way too lit up, the thing that separates the two games is the original portrayed how dark the story was by having dark graphics so you genuinely felt Abe's situation. In new n tasty it's just not the same.
You need to get your eyes checked.

I kinda like how it cuts back and forth from the slightly more serious tone of the AO/AE cutscenes to that of the comparably more humorous cut scenes of Munch’s Oddysee, as if the scenes with Munch are the comedic B-plot of the movie.
That's a really good point, it's interesting how Munch's Oddysee does seem to be a lot more lighthearted than the first two games. The tone of it definitely feels a lot different in many ways. I suppose it makes a hopefully good balance haha.

I think I know why The Raisin chose Lulu to be Abe and Munich’s key to Vyker’s labs. Or at least I got a plausible theory. Any other wealthy Glukkon is a gamble whether or not they would be invited to Vyker’s lab for the auction, and it would take way too long to look through any sort of guest list to find a wealthy Glukkon to use. But by using a poor Glukkon like Lulu, he’d get so much fame, popularity and recognition going from a poor schmuck to a big time Glockstar that the Vyker’s would have to invite him.
Does that make sense pupbenny?
What's awesome is how the fans are following exactly how Lorne Lanning wants this game to go. He wants to make a movie like game and this just draws more attention to that which is awesome

The way you chose to cluster and put scenes near each other so that they'd be relevant/continue a theme of what impact the Glukkons/Vykkers have on the other races of Oddworld is brilliant, like the segue from the Soulstorm depiction of a Mudoken being tortured by Vykers, and then shifting to Munch whose in the Glukkons lab. Brilliant, smart, well-done. And I love your use of the scenes where Abe narrates while using poetry.
Thank you so much, it's really nice to see that you picked up on that! :) Wasn't sure if people would notice, but I tried to do some deliberate paralleling. Like how Abe gets unlocks his Shrykull power, then in the next scene Munch realises his Sonar power. Even their poses were the same haha! That was just a nice coincidence though.

This is so good! And man. I always get chills at when Munch is being captured. Then the Glukkons forces come to get him. That tense music rising up, all the odd world life running and fleeing as lights approach. Than that beep just getting higher and HIGHER. The tension! The suspense is terrible! I hope it lasts
Is it me or is Munch the most sympathetic Oddworld protagonist, he is literally all alone and his kidnapped upon thinking he finally discovered somebody else, and literally had to go on this whole dangerous quest which is mostly out of the water or else be experimented on or be used for surgery!
To top it all off, he's a single dad of a hundred and fifty babies! On the plus side, at least his species is on the right track again.

So... Me and a couple of my mates decided to watch this for New Year as a Nostalgic Trip and oh my god I'm so glad we did 😭 I remember getting catapulted into an obsession for these 'Odd' games, and instantly loving them. Believe it or not, I started playing them when I was like 8 💀 i was a pretty hard kid so i didn't really get any nightmare or pick up any of the cuss words lmao. I also remember watching my Grandad play Abe's Oddysee + Exodus, Munch's Oddysee, New 'n Tasty and watching a trailer for Soulstorm before the full game publicly released. Now looking back, I literally can't see how my innocent ass didn't think any of the 'beheading', 'experimental surgery', 'guts' or 'slavery'! Thank you so much for making this Benny, it really took me back :)
Seeing Munch gave me so much nostalgia personally I can't- I hope he gets bought back into the games at somepoint, he was my favourite when I was a kid :'D

I also loved the fact that you invented YOUR version of events: you know Abe who first escapes from the Rupture farms, then he gets the vision of the weirdos, then he goes to the SoulStorm Brewery and THEN goes back to the Rupturefarms to stop them, as if you invented another quintology lol! Editing was great! It was like seeing a real movie, I always wanted to do something like you did, but I never found the ways and the time, I guess you did it for me lmao jk, You surpassed yourself, Uncle Lorne would be proud of you! Congratulations, because I've never seen such a thing! oh and ... in the end it would have been even more damn cool if you had also put in that unused scene where Munch is being cheered by all the Muds and Abe behind him farting! ( I don't know if you understand what scene I'm talking about :P )

If I recall correctly, watching that advert was the first ever time I heard Munch's voice haha. For some reason my first reaction was 'he sounds like a cowboy'. I'm not entirely sure why I thought that though. There's so many good suggestions I'm hearing, someone said I should've put Stranger in a post-credits scene, that would've been epic too. xD
Anyway, thank you again! :) Indeed, it was quite tricky trying to put it altogether in a way that flowed well and made (relatively) cohesive sense so I had to change a few things around. Like how in New N' Tasty I think it shows the 'I witnessed Paramonia' etc type scenes and THEN later shows the cutscene of him entering the respective temple (I think anyway, I could be mistaken) but I flipped it and instead made him enter the temple and then the witnessing of each place being representative of him doing the trials, which I didn't know how else to represent considering that's all normally gameplay haha.

Only issue that I have with it is that it feels a bit odd to me personally, because the scenes aren't in the same order as they appeared chronologically in games - it just feels odd to see Abe go to the Soulstorm Brewery before coming back to Rapture Farms, seeing Munch appear so early and etc.
But except for that it's amazing

This was an incredible project and you clearly have a talent for film making, so well done dude youre a superstar! Now i feel like im caught up to watch a playthrough of soulstorm thanks to you man, good job! Also the beginning cgi was so nice i thought it was part of the initial intro cutscene lol. A minor edit I’d make is at 24:57 - 26:42 is have it go from the the group leaving the raisin’s temple to the following scene w/ them all at the well, then right after the others bail on Abe once he jumps, THEN cut to Munch in the trash chute and dropping down, then cut back to Abe soaring up into the air and the scene follows how you edited it. It makes it clean and Munch’s fall matches up more cleanly w/ his collision w/ Abe in terms of timing. Y’know what else? I think the inclusion of the cut Guardian Angel teaser right after Abe’s capture at Rupture Farms would’ve definitely worked. Like, right after that scene, over a black screen some text says “hours later”. Or imposed on the screen as the scene plays out.
An RTS would be the perfect sequel to these games

Thank you very much Mr. G-sez! The munch footage is from the PC version, I just used some AI technology to upscale the footage and did some editing techniques to make it look (imo) better and also made the framerate higher to make it look way smoother hopefully! Thank you and be blessed as well. :)

Benny, I'm dying to know where you got the score of the cutscenes from in their original form (For example, the sombre music from the ending of Abe's Exoddus that doesn't get interrupted by the record scratch cutting to the M.O.M. news bulletin)
Haha, yes, I was very fortunate to find that! I knew I wanted to use a full version, assuming one existed. So, I checked Oddworld Inhabitants own Abe's Exoddus The Movie (it's on CZcams), that inspired me to make this film, to see if there was anything from that I could use, and that music was in the credits luckily! It's a bit poor quality though, (couldn't find a high quality version) so I kept the original from Exoddus but faded that out before the record scratch in an attempt to hide the poor quality. I didn't explain that very well. I just put it together basically, hopefully hiding some of the bad quality of the full version.
Oh yeah and I added somewhat of an echo effect to it to try to hide the poor quality.

I honestly wish New and Tasty kept the darker cloudy lighting for RuptureFarms since it looks better to me along with the interior of the plant itself.
Yeah I agree, it seemed way too bright and colourful to me. I tried to edit the footage of NNT to try to give a darker tone and reduce the bloom and that kind of thing to match somewhat better with the original footage.
I've got all four games on one Dvd from a magazine.
By accident I started with "Abe's exoddus".
I kinda like the glukons because they have cool tech. But they are quite cruel.
I have never played Oddworld on Playstation, PS4 or PS5 only on PC in the 90's which was Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee

yesterday i searched for infos about oddworld movie on yt and today you upload a video with the same title! really weird. i was looking for something that lorne lanning mentioned, about a oddworld series or movie. he did not confirm anything, i think he didn't want to mention it. it was an interview on their channel, where this girl plays soulstorm.
Another funny coincidence happened to me while I was uploading this. Someone sent me a tweet saying that, due to hollywood usually screwing up film adaptions of games, it's a good thing they never made an oddworld movie. xD I found it funny reading that while I was uploading a video literally called 'Oddworld The Movie' haha. Hopefully if they did do an actual oddworld movie which, as you said is something lorne has kind of mentioned before, I think it would be okay as it's always sort of been a plan to eventually do a film of the story. It sort of feels like as opposed to most video game adaptions where it's a film of a game, an oddworld movie would be more like a film of a story.
Oddworld really is peak fiction.

You did a good job, though the start is a bit confusing. It shows us Abe escaping and then escapes to Munch. To someone like me who knows nothing about Oddworld, it's a bit confusing, at first. Eventually, it does make sense.

xD Yeah and plus in the cutscenes you never actually see him rescue any so I find it kind of funny in this film when he says 'I rescued Mudokons but who's gonna rescue me.' It makes it look like he's lying lmao, a part of me says 'You rescued Mudokons!? When!?'

So it was true that the original version had a Mudokor head on a stick for a product. Honestly, I feel the popsicle fits better for the snack aesthetic the other products have, even though it is darker just to show the head on a stick, plus, it makes sense on an advertisement level
