The struggle of being an FE user is sometimes THINKING I'm happy when I'm actually not due to not knowing how I'm really feeling at times. So I may appear very happy and project that outwards but don't actually know that I'm really unhappy on the inside.

This! My husband is an Fe user of some sort so he looks for (almost needs) outwardly expressed "tells" for a person's mood. He will look at me in quiet moments and NEED me to "show" him I am happy or in a good mood or that I am ok. We have been together for 35 years so I am kinda mostly used to this, but sometimes it still drives me bonkers, lol! I have often made the comment, "what do you want me to do to prove to you I am happy, jump up and down and have a celebration? I can't be jovial all of the time." Then it makes me wonder how my demeanor comes across that he thinks I am sad or unhappy... And then beyond that what must other onlookers think of me? I actually am pretty happy most of the time, other than when I am struggling with anxiety - but he needs me to be expressive and to me that can be exhausting, lol. Also, I have this habit of laughing in the middle of being really mad and it makes even me question my sanity! Like, I know I am angry, where is this laughter coming from (when I was younger it was crying, I would ball when I was mad)...

I cry sometimes when I'm angry but am an Fe user. I think that culture plays a huge part in how comfortable we are to express & accept the fact that we have emotions. Modern times, ever since somebody decided we're dominant in our left or right brain.. Along with the establishment o patriarchy or at least the British & the WW2 after effects of "keep calm, carry on".. We're all crazier for it, we're all constipated & don't know how to act.. This is my mass over generalisation.. Based on zero research.

That's such an Fe concern - caring for something bigger than themselves. Fi users can "pretend" they do, but it is intrinsic in Fe users.
Though, I'm mostly stoic - I couldn't care less whatever anyone thinks of me, or said of me, but when I hear anybody (even I don't know them), gets disrepected of any sort, Ahh, it'll make my blood boil. And I'll get very vocal, with fast, sharp, venomous and carefully selected language to make the biggest impact.

It's like I feel the impact before it hits. I almost never cry because I'm just sad. I was going to say this started to change in the last couple years, but as I was writing, realized that wasn't sadness. It was frustration and overwhelm about the condition of the world, seeing potential ways of addressing issues and people doing the exact opposite, and feeling powerless to actually make a real impact

One thing I’ve noticed about Fi is easier to understand when you think about Ti.
Ti love logic for logic’s sake, and challenges other’s logical frameworks to check its own integrity.
Fi finds beauty in emotion, even emotions that are not considered positive culturally. It also likes to challenge other’s values and decisions in order to be sure of its own integrity, much like Ti. It is interested in distinguishing between similar yet specific emotions in order to express itself in more interesting and specific ways.

@CasualCognition, Sometimes the Fi struggles to be taken seriously by others when they’re annoyed. So the Fi says things, yet unless the audience knows them well, the audience might not really think the Fi really is that fussed by the issue. I say this because sometimes there is a need to act out and let people know that you’re annoyed, pushing the Fi into Fe. When this happens I’m annoyed about having to show I’m annoyed (on top of the initial trigger for being annoyed). It’s a bit like anger squared!

INTP here. I find that this and other vid’s from this CZcamsr are excellent in describing and dealing with certain aspects of cognitive functions. For ex her vid on the similarities of all 4 introverted functions is second to none, IMO.
However, as to the most likely underlying reason for why sometimes Fi dom’s don’t emote their actual feelings, in addition to the points here, I believe this other thing is perhaps more pertinent:
Fi users are known for normally expressing their feelings accurately without much apparent thought to the external environment, giving them their infamous reputation of seeming oh so comfortable with hanging on to negative emotions for a long time (you go INFP/ISFPs!) However, at certain specific moments with, usually, more intense, negative emotions, they will make this 180 degree switch to emote markedly different feelings to what is actually going on inside of them. Why? I believe it is primarily because Fi is a highly personalized and in a way potentially ‘sensitive’ function, as notions driven by Fi can to the Fi dom be among those things they hold the closest to their ‘heart/soul’.
Now, normally, since the Fi dom usually is not looking for/ needing anybody to validate or ‘approve’ their emotions and thoughts, they will have no issue expressing or talking out their positions freely. That is, until they no longer feel emotionally safe doing so, based on what they perceive, accurately or not, how the particular audience they are interacting with at that specific moment NOT being understanding to their points. In this particular case, when the Fi dom believes that their emotion will likely be questioned, maybe ridiculed, and/or they haven’t ruminated enough / come to full terms with their feelings on the particular issue at hand and be ready to explain it, if, and that could be only in theory, they will be challenged, they will then become overly protective about this position / emotion and it will feel so incredibly personal to them, so the final effect is that they will react in a way that protects them from any outsiders / audience’ input altogether by putting up a wall of false emotions, in order to keep ‘the intruders’ away and not even give them a chance to question or challenge the Fi dom’s feelings. To be sure, this scenario would typically only occur for issues of deep importance to the Fi dom (and to their Fi).
Thing is, as an INTP I experience this EXACT phenomenon, only with thought-assessments: I normally will talk very freely and openly, even brazenly, about my positions. Until, that is, the moment I think that the audience likely will NOT at all understand my logic (often while their eager attempts at doing so leaves lots to be desired), and the issue is highly important to me and close to my heart. In that case I will simply abruptly shut up or very deliberately and awkwardly change the subject, usually to the audience’s incessant protests.
I believe I have this from Antonia Dodge at Personality Hacker: at that point my Ti sort of ‘takes over’ my behavior because it intensely does not TRUST the audience with the personal content matter.

I'm definitely a typical Fi user in this regard, as my emotional display is often really flat when I talk about times when I've felt happy or sad. Because of that, I've been told by a couple of people that I come across as very stoic and even emotionless. I also get random spikes of emotion that occur spontaneously, and after I've felt a certain way, I literally can't bring that emotion back into my mind to communicate it with others. I just can't "make" myself feel a way that I am not currently feeling.

But if someone talks to me I'm back in Fe mode and have to switch my sadness off again. its unhealthy because people always come to me with problems which is fine and I'm happy to help and support people. This is a good general explanation.
Though in terms of consistency of message communicated- exact/overt/matching emotional response I can sometimes as a fe user go the other way and appear More "invested"/vaguely dramatic than I actually am which people like to make assumptions about (sometimes this is because depending whom I am talking to I experience some level of stress or consternation that I am even communciating in efficient/holistic/relevant enough way/due to a sense of exposure)
So therefore I admit that there is some level of inconsistency here
Partially as well as a infj I have to also mention that we use somewhat emotionally tinted language at times I think because we try to adopt or mirror the language patterns of those around us, and also because our emotions and thoughts are so closely linked by emotional intellectualisations that they may seem to blend together
So I'd say that it probably isn't easy to observe and identify exactly what we are doing when doing this
(Ironically we attempt all of this for complete consistency)

Should I be tricky then? As an infp I’m more often actually expressive with what I say and how I feel than being incongruent with that. It’s always easy to tell how I feel just looking at me, or when I reply to someone. It’s the worst when I’m having this energy loss, I really want not to let my energy pass on someone else but I just can’t fake it, but it is kinda truth about mixing the emotions, I always feel very paradoxical, so when I think about the content it makes me want to laugh 😆 and here is the explanation for my weird behavior when I’m stressed, mostly in social interactions I just start laughing and everyone asks why and I just can’t explain because it is stupid 😂
My strategy for example when someone asks me at a party or whatever similar thing “are you having fun?” When I’m a little down or quiet I’m more likely to catch something that I actually like and point expressively how I found it interesting what someone said or done, or just concentrate on the feeling part and simply say that something is so warm and comfortable or beautiful/intriguing if I really like that. Or just say what is on my mind 🤷🏼‍♀️ If I’m feeling comfortable enough (or more like I actually see that someone in interested in my answer not just asking to start a conversation) to talk with this person so openly in my goofy and abstractional way

I not only once perceived that Fi users can be extremely expressive, and I think that may have to do with their often times high moral standards. Fi users tend to deeply believe in something, and don't shy away from standing up for that, resulting in them expressing their wants, needs and goals. look at fictional characters like eren jäger, who is an Fi dom. he always expressed himself. also kurapika, tertiary Fi user, highly expressive especially when in his Ni-Fi loop.
High fe users on the other hand often lack self identity, and therefore seem more stoic in their speaking patterns. look at chrollo lucilfer, an infj. I chose these characters because their mbti is easy to spot and generally agreed on by the community. of course you can find that in real people as well

Actually, I'm a ESFP, that means I'm Se Fi Te Ni, and I can tell you the difference between Fe and Fi is that we take into account our feelings rather than others' feelings. We show our emotions (people say I shouldn't be so mad all the time) but we get emotional because of what we feel, not what others' feel. Sometimes we could be seen as non-empathetic because of that. I don't show other emotions than anger and seriousness in public, but that doesn't mean we don't feel anything else or other Fi users don't show other emotions.

This seems true. I have self-typed myself as an Fi-user. *INFP to be exact. I sometimes tell people I’m fine and they’ll (at least initially) not believe me because I sound tired or uncertain or whatever. Other times I’m really upset but I try not to show it, yet my tone of voice or facial expressions give it away. In those cases, I’m just glad that I remain in control over my emotions and have not snapped and started to cry or yell. One of the last times I had done that I was bullied for it and called a “princess” and they never bothered to listen to me. Yesterday it almost happened again but I was able to remain in control of my emotions and they eventually left me alone. Either way the way how I express myself constantly betrays my feelings.

You must remember that low Fx users can imitate Fi via other methods. As an INTP usually I'm completely detached from my emotions in my default, I also am Ti dom and Fe comes naturally only when comfortable. So I'm using Ti with help from Si to imitate Fi constantly. I think about how I would feel based on past experiences and sensory but not emotional input, and the things that happened in the relevant previous timespan. I'm more likely to feel pleasure, discomfort or boredom than a tangible emotion if my body is telling me something

However I'm still confused as this could also mean I'm FE as I feel bad when I can’t express properly how I feel and I want the other person to know how much I appreciate whatever it is that they did, I just can’t always properly express it in the moment and when I try it feels fake.

    Hi I need help.
So I'm not very good at writing out my thoughts at all so please bare with me, this is going to be a chaotic mess that I'll try to organize (Might organize it too much LOL)
I'm struggling between every cognitive function, and I have for 5 years but I will keep to the topic. Fe vs fi. Okay. So I think I'm a fi user, I mean I focus on trying to be as genuine as I can be, I try to be myself at all times. When people judged me for being a girl and liking video games and skateboarding, I thought it was stupid. When people doubt my opinions that I strongly believe in, then I don't just change my mind for them. And I always question "Was I being ingenuine just then..." I'm constantly worried that I'm not being myself. Which I heard was fi. I also can't handle critcism at all, and get very very emotional and angry over anything. I take so many things personal and lets say if someone let me on read, I would panic thinking they hate me. Even when my logic is like "No they don't hate you" I'm still like. Nope, they 100% do and heres why. I focus on making myself happy, I just want to be happy. (But if someone expected me to be serious then I will be serious) While still being spiteful because I don't want to be serious right now, can't people just let me be myself? I also got really personal about my favourite shows probably because I projected onto a character that reminded me of me which I guess is also introverted feeling lol. I also really love being childish (because its a break from my overthinking) and I watch kids cartoons like MLP and stuff and people that call me childish over it, I would just freak out lmao and I would also get mad that they don't let me do those kind of things. So thats fi for sure, and people have said I'm a fi user.
    HOWEVER
I seem to have fe. On tests, I score high on fe just as much as fi. All my opinions I get from my family. I argue opinions online a kid and they were crushed and I got into several arguements so I think that I don't deserve to have them. I also just adapt to people constantly. One minute I'll be anxious and stressed in my room, then someone optimistic will talk to me and boom, my entire personality changes to fit theres. I do this to get them to like me I guess, I'm aware of that but I also do it because I don't want them to focus on worrying about me too much when they have their own lives and should be happy. The thing is I AM OBSESSED with people, I am obsessed with validation. I try to be myself, but I find myself naturally gravitating to fit others emotions. Someone cries, then I cry. Someone laughs at a joke then I laugh. I want to be like other people, I want to be them. I mimic them. Whenever I have my own ideas on something, I don't share it with someone if I know they won't like it, and if they have an idea then I find myself agreeing with them no matter what. I can't tell if I genuinly believe them or not, but as soon as they say their idea, suddenly I just like it. For instance. I could despise a movie, hate everything about it. Then get home and my friend says "Damn that movie was so cool!" and suddenly I love that movie. I never knew if I actually despised it or not, I get confused on how I actually felt about the movie and just agree with my friend. Not even sure if its just to get them to like me more, or out of fear I'll make them mad if I disagree but its like I just switch up, I genuinely just adore the movie if they liked it. I've also found that I seem to be an empath. I get very sensitive with others and feel bad for them to the extreme. For example; My teacher who I've not replied to for days just gave me an extension for my work till the end of the month. I feel lazy, I feel stupid. Why has the teacher done this for me. I FEEL TERRIBLE, they are such a good person. And they have to deal with my crap? Why are they so nice. They deserve better. And then whenever I see people excluded, I just have to go and include them, I usually get left behind later on and thats when I get emotional and sad and take things personally. But It feels good at the time to make the other person happy, and I always go out of my way to include everyone at all times. Which leads me to think I have fe.
What do you think? I think that a big reason on why I'm so confused is because while I want to be myself. I don't exactly know who myself is. It seems to change. I can go from really really sensitive to just idgaf about anything lets make jokes easily. And I can go from shy and anxious (on the way to a party) To suddenly being the loudest one there (at the party?) or if not the loudest, at least adapt out of nowhere.
    TY :D

      @AryaViotta Před 2 lety +1

Gosh, I relate. I do have the same struggle! From what you are telling here I would still gravitate towards Fi though! Some of the Fe stuff you listed still sounds like it could be coming from you Fi. For example how you want to include people who are excluded. It sounds like these traits still kinda come from Fi and your morals.
As for the confusion, maybe look into the enneagram. You might be a Fi user with the enneagram 9!

    • @KxNOxUTA
      @KxNOxUTA Před 2 lety +5

The thing is, that high degrees of people pleasing can come not from character but trauma and things like anxiety disorders. So if you have suffered from trauma of your own opinions earning you trouble (e.g. in a household with parents demanding you be like they want you to be from early childhood or them not being stable so meting their mood was a matter of perceived survival for you) then your need for feedback may not be related to your characte in first place and what cognitive functions youd preferably use.
What you need to consider is basically, by what pinciples you work in situations when things really matter to you (!) but there is NO outside pressure. Hence situations like: When you're free to express yourself and cannot go wrong because you are sure to be accepted, then what is important to you? What matters the most? How are your priorities then? What settings are preferred?
Overall, however, you sound like Fi with anxiety :'3 Have hugs!!

After pondering more about this, I have a theory why Fe's words and expressions are congruent while Fi's are not. The same principle applied for Te and Ti based on my observation. Fe attempts to affect, others, which they are 'actively selling an idea, and have to 'put up a show', hence the highly focused and intentional congruency, while not having a real Fi compass inside of them. Fii on the other hand, is trying to self express something that is random (as you put it), still-in-processing-mode and maybe raw, hence the incongruency as they do not wish to affect others. Having said this, I observe ind a highly self-actualized Fi-lead person, the expression and words are congruent, but firm and self-assured, without the psychological need to persuade. It comes of as strong and confident, hence persuasive in a different way, effortlessly. Hope this observation is useful. - ENTJ female
