Ludicrous-speed bouncing around. Completed without collecting any emeralds, with both Sonic and Tails controlled by the player.
This run takes everything you know about Sonic 3 & Knuckles and turns it upside-down. It extensively uses the "scroll objects offscreen to pass through them" trick to zip and warp to places that shouldn't be reached, break bosses, and effectively skip entire stages.
This latest effort by Aglar (tasvideos.org/Users/Profile/A...) and marzojr (tasvideos.org/Users/Profile/m...) represents the first published improvement of this run in over four years, and the first time since this run, over seven years ago (tasvideos.org/826M), that the authors replayed the entire game instead of replaying only select levels and then splicing input from the previous movie. Every single level is faster, and there are some surprising new glitches in several stages. For more details, see the run's comments (tasvideos.org/4514S).

Marble garden was skipped because the act 2 boss was loaded and beaten which I think makes the game glitch and believe you're in act 2 (thus skipping it)

Sonic spies on Knuckles as he, unscathed, exits a passage in Mushroom Hill. Realizing the futility of his own actions regarding the mission at hand, seeing as Knuckles somehow so far cannot be stopped, Sonic then proceeds to crush himself underneath the gate to that very same passage.

Gordon Taylor I don't really get a good picture from rerecords, but for that short of a run that sounds like a lot.
This is my favorite speedrun just because of how well Tails is incorporated through the run.

I just realized that Ice Cap Zone 1's boss was completely bypassed- it was turned into one zone...
You know, I WAS going to say "That's uhh... ONE way to skip the Sanopolis Act 2 ghosts" but then the ghosts showed up anyways. Maybe it's hard-coded in or something?

At 60hz, 201,316 re-records works out to upwards of 2 re-records for every single frame of this run

I remember seeing a video that explained the Marble Garden Zone Act 2 skip in scrupulous detail. It was pretty fun, but seems to have been privated or something.
The only way you really could improve on this it seems is to find some way to skip the big time bonuses ticking down at the end of the levels. :P
How ironic...a game that punishes you for going really fast by making a specific process take longer the faster you go.
That's actually something that real-time runners like Werster take into account. The 50k time bonus takes a few full seconds to tick off, so sometimes it's faster to wait at the end and miss the big points if you end up saving more time on the end of level screen. I think it would be applicable at Ice Cap Zone, since waiting an extra second would knock the time bonus down to 10k and be a positive trade-off.

Actually in classic sonic runs the time is counted by act completion and not overall time
That's exactly why the runs for sonic games subtract time bonuses. You can actually obsolete a shorter run with a longer run without any emulation differences like this, if you improve a stage from e.g. 31 seconds to 29 seconds, although due to how infrequently these are published, this is unlikely

I like how in the notes it says that Sonic can beat one of the bosses a few frames faster, but he just doesn't move fast enough to pull it off. Looks like the main goal was in-game time, hence the 59 on Ice Cap when in RTA it'd be faster to let the clock roll over to 1 minute.

So are they actually traveling through the walls and stuff? Or are they just appearing somewhere else in the level and the camera is catching up to them?
It's a technique called "zipping" or a "horizontal underflow" in which the character gets past the first pixel in the level, and since the game can't read negative positions it reads it as a very high positive position, which sends the player to the end of the level where the last pixel is.
