Every game on the Sega Genesis Mini 2: Is it actually worth buying without Working Designs CD games?

  • The Sega Genesis Mini 2 is now available on Amazon USA for pre-order, with the product officially going on sale on October 27th of 2022. Sega is reporting that quantities will be very small, so pre-orders are essential….but is the 60 game lineup actually worth it, at $100 US dollars, plus nearly $30 of shipping and handling? Especially in light of that fact that Working Designs will not be contributing any of their key SEGA CD translations for the US version (Lunar, Lunar 2, Popfulmail)?
    We examine this question in this video by systematically going through all 60 games, plus the bonus content, that have been officially announced for the SEGA Genesis Mini 2. If we can get 45 out of 60 thumbs up, then we will go forward and make a purchase! But will this lineup actually stack up to that arbitrary standard that we just made up for this video? Join us, and find out!

      @@francescosmith7859 I have to give it another try. It’s the first Sega cd game I ever played. I went to a friends house and his teenage brother had gotten a Sega Cd. I'm a retro game collector from Norway which buys video games and consoles from the US and Japan, and the tax law here is insane. In order to negate competition in price by importing goods, there's been an increase in tax rate. When I buy games from consoles that were never originally released here, the delivery fee and taxes doubles the price. In cases that the order is 100$ or more, I have to add another 100$.

      @@creativecatproductions The general purpose is to focus support on local businesses and support the local government. If Norwegian groceries are cheaper than ones imported over seas, then people are more inclined to buy local goods. Were this falls flat immediately is that Norway doesn't have everything that everybody wants, that's another reason for why importing exists. It seems either the government either fails to understand this, or doesn't want to support it's citizens. Importing snacks has gotten bigger than ever here despite this, but the prices stores are asking is just as insane. I don't know how much Takis usually go for, but I've usually seen them being sold for 10$ a piece. Books are tax free of course, doesn't matter what kind of book it is either of course.

    This is big for me as the Sega Genesis turned me into the hardcore gamer I am. I started gaming back in 1986 with the Nes and Master System but I was not only very young but a casual player. When I decided on the Sega Genesis as my choice between it and the TG-16 in 1989 I had no idea how powerful its appeal would be to me. So as a Sega Genesis fan since its first year on the market and getting the Sega CD in 1992 (first year) I will rate every game on the new mini console.

    Space Harrier 1+2- could be absolutely amazing. Space Harrier 2 is said to now have scaling which should amp up the awesome factor by quite a bit. I can't wait. The others have never been released so....who knows. I wish Sonic 2 was on here as well as Popful Mail, Lunar Eternal Blue, and Lunar Silverstar Story. Sega could have done it with subtitles...Virtua Racing was absolutely incredible when it hit the Genesis easily smoking Star Fox in graphical fidelity and that is why it was done. The game was (for the time) smooth and quiet playable.

    The Japanese version of Ecco the Dolphin CD included both the original and the sequel anyway, so we were always getting both games. The alternative would have been to just not include the first game, even though it's already emulated, without giving us anything in return. So I'm glad they just included it for those who enjoy playing it. Also, I don't understand why you applaud Sega on the one hand for porting the vs mode of Puyo Puyo Sun to the Genesis specifically for this mini console, but are on the other hand bewildered (and refuse to give a thumbs up) that two other games got the same treatment. Care to explain your reasoning there in case I missed something?
    But don't get me wrong, it's still a cool video and I enjoyed your perspective, especially, since I didn't grow up with the Genesis and don't know any of these games. I'd still like to buy either the European or Japanese version of the Mega Drive mini, but haven't decided yet which to cancel. The Japanese line-up is definitely more to my taste, but many games are basically unplayable without knowing the language. Decisions, decisions...

      My reactions were fairly off the cuff and I suspect my thoughts and feelings about these games will shift once I see the final product. I’m super stoked about the prospect that any version of Puyo Puyo 3 was ported for the Genesis and I am very excited to play the new sprite scaling Space Harrier 2, and the new port of Fantasy Zone. Devi and Pii doesn’t look that appealing to me and I’ve never played any version of it. So I can’t really get too pumped about it. The old arcade games are neat but they seem very out of place and I sort of wish they weren’t even there at all.

    Really fun video. They are now available and I'm interested to see how long that lasts and to see reviews as people start getting their units. Do you find it interesting that Sega didn't send anyone review units beforehand? Or is that more to build up hype and they hoped they already had it with their very limited release?

    • @creativecatproductions
      @creativecatproductions  Před rokem

      That’s a really good point, it’s been really quiet on the CZcams front as far as western reviewers are concerned. I’m guessing they didn’t give out review units at all. I get the sense that the way they did things this time was to only make quantities that matched the number of pre-orders. I strongly suspect that the original Sega Genesis Mini was kind of a bomb for the company. They went on sale from $80 to $60 almost right away and they lingered around on the shelves of big retail stores like Walmart and Best Buy for like a full year or more. It was a good product, and people wanted it, but it’s like they assumed 50 million people were going to want it and they made way way too many. Now they seem to have gone in the complete opposite direction….only making a few, see if they sell, and then make more. I think that’s why they kept getting sold out and then coming back as available. I think Sega just kept moving their production order to meet real predicted demand. Their budget was, apparently, slashed to a fraction of what they had last time and I guess there was no room for free promotional units…..
      Also they may have been afraid of negative reviews? One thing they did that’s bound to be highly controversial was to completely cut the first level boss fight from Bare Knuckle 3…..indeed they cut an entire level of the game out, because it featured Ash, a gay level boss in a leather biker outfit who also wears silk stockings and high heels. He was replaced with another boss in the US version to avoid controversy in the 90s, but now the Japanese version cut the level entirely. This is a shame because one of the reasons to flaunt the Japanese version was, in fact, it’s total lack of censorship and completeness. Not anymore.

    • @francescosmith7859
      @francescosmith7859 Před rokem +1

      @@creativecatproductions interesting. It definitely seems like they swung the opposite direction in terms of availability and once again went to the extreme but I'm still a bit baffled by no review units. Sega is in some big trouble if a few free promotional units breaks the bank.
      That's surprising to hear about the censorship. I really liked how the first mini included the different versions of games depending on region and was hoping you'd have access to Bare Knuckle 3 on the US unit (it's clearly superior to Streets of Rage 3 in my opinion) but kind of doubt they'd include something like that if they're making cuts to the game.
      The Evercade EXP comes out soon too so I've got a few products to keep my eye on. I still haven't bought the VS and I'm bouncing back and forth between the two. I strongly prefer console gaming but feel like a handheld would be a nice option especially if it also plays well on your tv and while I have most of the included Capcom games, they're still a really nice option that I wish I could get on the VS and I have a strong preference for the included games on the EXP over the VS.

    • @creativecatproductions
      @creativecatproductions  Před rokem +1

      Well, it’s been confirmed that all the Japanese (and even PAL) versions are included depending upon which language you select. So Bare Knuckle 3 is 95% on there….only in this slightly truncated form without 1/2 of that first level. I was initially very excited by this fact because Bare Knuckle 3 is soooo much better than Streets of Rage 3 and I love it, but now I’m less excited. A bit disappointed to be honest.

      I really think they should have made use of the 32X library since the SEGA CD add-on was a feature here. It would have counter balanced the disappointing loss of Lunar and Snatcher. I definitely think they are including secret games, but it looks to me like they want to promote them? Im pretty sure that port of the original Space Harrier that SEGA showed off is meant to be a hidden game. I hope there’s more. M2 and SEGA really love doing that stuff.

    I'm still on the fence about the Genesis mini 2. It does such Popular Mail is not on the U.S. version of the SEGA Genesis mini 2. But if I'm being honest. I've always had mixed feelings about Working Design's translations. There's to many ass and fart jokes. There also very meme heavy. If you didn't grow up in the 80's &90's you may not understand half the references they're making. I,m not saying that's necessarily a bad thing. I just kinda feel like if you've played one Working Design translation JRPG, you've kinda played them all. Because of there style. I played literal fan translations of the same games and I enjoyed them much more. It was like playing a totally different game. Working Design had a tendency to changes the story to there liking. But I think a translator should always keep to the creator's vision. But that's just me. That being said, Popular Mail is a good Working Design's translation. It's a funny game that works with their style. What do think about Working Design's translations? Lastly I just wanted to say, I love your narration style and the voices you do. Especially isometric games starring Sonic the Hedgehog, a character that’s supposed to go fast, but never can because of cluttered environments and horrible angles.

The Working Designs games, however, practically defined the SEGA CD in the US. Lunar and its sequel weren’t just popular RPG games but, for many, they were the primary reason for the SEGA CD altogether. Night Trap sucks... you're forgiving that crap game as usual... I'd trade votes for Super Locomotive, at least the latter has the special Japanese Sega arcade sauce...
    As for Streets of Rage 3... that game wasn't a let down because of the music... it was a let down because of the heavy censorship and alterations that Sega of America's staff did back in the 90s...
    The game as it is, is passable but if you play the actual Japanese Sega MegaDrive version or even the rom hacked to have English translation which exposes the dumb ass censorship and altering Sega of America's staff did to the Bare Knuckle series then you cannot claim to not be hooked more in either the Japanese original or English translation rom hack.
    Finally as for RagnaCenty... oh wait "Crusader of Centy"... you credit that game as "made by NexTech"
    Do you even know how many games were "made by NexTech" on Sega's MegaDrive and Sega Saturn? Even Dreamcast? Seriously?
    NexTech "made the" Sega Saturn version of Resident Evil 1... then years later it was NexTech that "made the" Dreamcast Code Veronica game...
    NexTech also made Gran Chaser on Sega Saturn (for SEGA) and they "made the" two Toshinden games AND the graphically complex 3d fighter named D-Xhird on Saturn for Takara.
    NexTech worked very closely with Sega as well as those third party publishers to get Sega reprogrammed conversions of games from other platforms as well as do remakes like Gran Chaser.
    Therefore there is more to the story behind why and who and how RagnaCenty was made and why that game was really a Sega IP, a Sega Enterprises Japan IP that your buddies at 1990s Sega of America staff refused to support, prioritize and promote as that game truly offered the North American Genesis owner with a worthy alternative to Zelda, if they never owned Nintendo and was a game that could have gotten a sequel on the MegaDrive and Genesis but never happened because 90s Sega of America's staff wanted you to big shit-ware like 32X...
    Oh wait, a sequel was made by Sega Enterprises Japan money, named in Engrish "Linkle Liver Story" or rather Wrinkle River Story (the pronouncing of the R) for the Sega SATURN, a game released in 1996 with some of the most beautiful 2d graphics and we got a spiked bat to the head by your 90s Sega of America's staff.
    Also Alien Soldier was released in Europe by Sega Europe... it definitely wasn't released in North America where Sega of America's staff wielded all authority as to what games would be approved for localization just like hoe GunStar Heroes almost never made it here and how GleyLancer also never made it here either... as well as Pulseman... aka games like Megaman the Wily Wars which never got rom cartridge releases because they were held hostage as exclusive Sega Channel experiences where YOU owned nothing... especially if you turned the system off.. lmaooo
    Also all of those Ecco games suck, instead of prioritizing the Japanese to English translations of many MegaDrive exclusive games like Eliminate Down or even the Langrisser series... and the horrible practice of altering the names where even the Japanese titles had some thought put into them... hence Langrisser is actually a powerful ancient sword in that game where you are basically trying to get it or your enemy will...
    Try playing Langrisser II as the English translation rom hack by fans on your SD card Cartridge and real Sega Genesis Model 1 High Definition Graphics hardware with the stereo cables and a CRT... you might either blow up like a volcano in Rage as to why the game wasn't translated or you'll end up loving it and gaining appreciation for Langrisser I aka Warsong which whoever renamed it came off like an asshole especially since many still famous NES games have complex names like Faxanadu, etc

    • @creativecatproductions
      @creativecatproductions  Před rokem

      Night Trap totally sucks, but it’s also one of the most important and simultaneously interesting SEGA CDs games ever made.
      Streets of Rage 3 was a let down, at the time, personally, because the music was awful. An unbearable cacophony. The originals were inspired by American “house music” played at night clubs. Streets of Rage 3 seemed to be inspired by a dump trump falling off a cliff and into a very large pile of scrap metal. Maybe it was going for “industrial”? Most people weren’t aware of the censorship at the time, which was egregious. The Japanese version plays better. If I recall from last time SEGA included both the Japanese and US versions of these games. I’m going to bet that the Japanese version is selectable by making an adjustment on the menu screen. Possibly.
      Crusader of Centy was, in fact, made my NexTech and yes indeed NexTech went on to make a lot of games for SEGA as a subsidiary. They were cut loose and fully independent around the time of the demise of the Dreamcast. I am aware of many of the games made by NexTech.
      I think Crusader of Centy is a beautiful game with some interesting ideas, but its no Zelda. It lacks that level of polish or careful construction. They probably should have published it themselves but I don’t think it was going to convert a lot of people over to its cause on its own merits. It was a very late Genesis game, but there was a sequel of sorts for the SEGA Saturn called Linkle Liver Story, also by NexTech, and involved many of the same people. It was the last game by Yayoi Onda who wrote the story of both games, and is credited as a director on Crusader of Centy.
      Alien Soldier was briefly released in the US as an exclusive game on the SEGA Channel, just like MegaMan the Wiley Wars. Im not a big fan of the latter. I’ll stick to the NES versions.
      I agree. Ecco sucks!
      I definitely have to check Langrisser II out! Thanks for watching dude 😎

      I was buying GameFan magazine at the time that Bare Knuckle III had been previewed and anticipated... that magazine wasn't always so consistent in quality but iirc they were one of the first who started blowing the whistle (not sure if EGM did so too) on SoR3 being lackluster and censored and not just for that one character but for the story structure and script being turned into a mess as well as screwing around with the level structure. I purchased SoR3 when it first came out as I was barely starting to import which itself wasn't that easy to get oriented and one of the things that sucked about it was if you wanted to get a particular game released in 1990 to 1992 (in 94) most places might not or maybe mightve had it... at the time I was still sipping the Sega of America 90s staff kool-aid because for the most we didn't have much alternative other than. Go full import but a lot of the actions, how they altered the names of game titles and censored them never added up considering the content they allowed in Eternal Champions and Eternal Champions CD, games they paid off the usual suspects to present as must buys when they were just sub par mediocre.
      Although I didn't get into too much of Night Trap, that was a VHS game that Sega of America's staff were fully hyping to the point that the other game you mentioned uses the old tag lines of "Hollywood film like production" and the crazy interviews where they actually made it seem like the live action FMV games were "making Sega more like the movie industry or Hollywood" or something that just didn't really make sense, in the most logical sense when it came to video games... also apart from Night Trap (which was possible as a VHS game that supposedly never got released or barely by that toy company, remember those?) It wad also Lethal Enforcers by Konami which did actually resemble an actual videogame even though it was a light gun shooting gallery but those two were the highlights of the 93 congress hearings which gave the SegaCD a mad image with gamers plus Sega of America's staff marketing... I recall I had to dig up previews and information for when Final Fight CD and Snatcher released to get them but there wasn't anything equal to the hype focus SoA spent on those live action FMV games...
      Popful Mail is another Sega Enterprises Japan funded game which I feel WD only got (along with Lunar and other JRPGs) because SoA just wad not bothering to other than what seems like first party Shining and PS series... obviously you know, you lived it too so you know how lackluster it was to get information on Sega games due to the different gamer magazines and SoA not bothering to build up their official Sega Visions to match Nintendo Power Magazine which was hyping Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy since at least the 1989 issues or their second year when they funded it into monthly subscription basis where we are always told how Sega Genesis was being so profitable and making money but none of that money was going to the official Sega magazine at all maybe SoA was too busy paying off EGM while GameFan was newer so they could make some direct Japan to U.S.A. comparisons which they kept doing especially in 1996 where SoA was like a broken record.
      RagnaCenty just like Golden Axe Warrior just like errm the two NEC PC-Engine/TG16 Zelda genre action JRPGs (which iirc Square copied and probably Enix too) needed to exist and didn't have to "be Zelda"
      Zelda by 94 gets most of it's hype from the NES game ONLY... Zelda II initially put off fans even though it wad still a good game and despite how pretty it was, Super Nintendo Zelda was pretty much ruined by that cheat sheet NoA put in the game... even though they relied on Nintendo Power Magazine, their phone tips line lmao, and selling strategy guide books directly... which we or most of us purchased due to the additional lore, artwork and for revisiting the game after honestly beating it... hence you claim Crusader Centy "wasn't a Zelda" it sure didn't have to be. It had to be RagnaCenty, a game funded by Sega Enterprises Japan with actual Sega staff and NexTech (because obviously the game was part of a RPG project war in Japan to at least save face and not lose out to all the JRPGs on SFC...) point being a game like that, especially after TG16 got two "Zelda clones" definitely sticks out as a memorable experience... it has it's own story, doesn't try to copy Zelda's save a princess story and when properly played on the pre-Kalinske Genesis with YM2612 and stereo cables... the game really sticks out as a must buy for back then being 1st party, NexTech wasn't an alien 3rd party company and technically speaking even the self published in Japan GameArts games should have been priorities for SoA instead of live action FMV games, their own shovelware Ecco/Chakkan/EternalChumps, etc
      Alien Soldier and Megaman being on Sega Channel DO NOT COUNT, they NEVER did because we were waiting for the rom cartridge release... now sure code wise the game was sloppy... but it makes you wonder WHO was truly requesting that Megaman be ported to the MegaDrive, the Japanese or SoA? Then when they (as usual a pattern behind the scenes) got the game to be rushed out, they instead held it exclusive to Sega Channel where you could not own it even if it was more awful than Eternal Champions which it wasn't because Megaman The Wily Wars was at least a far superior gaming experience to Ecco/Chakkan/EChumps combined...
      Alien Soldier not being released is no different from GunStar Heroes being originally rejected by SoA and only ONE guy with a background in making ports realized it needed to be localized before he eventually left by the end of 94 which speaks volumes of how awful Sega of America's 90s management staff were... and how softball Sega Enterprises Japan were in not checking them and firing all the heads the moment they started deviation.
      As such Centy was published by Atlus which was ok but not the same as SoA pushing it like they did their own games... when doing hindsight research you may discover that the problems were indeed being created by the 90s Sega of America leadership and decision makers even before the 32X "appeared" lol
      It was still horrible that Pulseman never got translated but hey SoA also put it on Sega Channel too just like a conspiracy...
      Nintendo of America had been funding their hype into their magazine where they created fanbases for Dragon Quest/Warrior, Final Fantasy and many others...
      Even the first Zelda TV commercial ever pulls out a Nintendo FanClub Newsletter and the first issue of NPM featured some maps for Zelda 1 even though they sold a strategy guide for it separately... stuff like that built the Zelda fandom not just the game itself... a severe case of lacking when we come to how Sega of America's 90s staff (specifically the entire 90s decade staff) just utterly destroyed and ruined the fanbase... no matter how cool it might have seemed that EGM and GameFan and GamePro mentioned or highlighted those games... even The dedicated Sega MegaDrive magazines in the U.K. did a better job despite the PAL region getting LESS officially released games and years later console launch due to PAL/SECAM technology

      I hope you enjoy the fan translated English Langrisser II, I personally loved it so much I got a repro cart for it and other games that never got translated or officially released including GleyLancer and Eliminate Down and Bare Knuckle III among others... as nice as a SD card cartridge is, a high quality repro unless you have the real game is worth it.
      Btw RagnaCenty combines two words and I don't believe it's hard to pronounce in English just like Langrisser and even Bare Knuckle... iirc Nintendo Power Magazine was hyping a small band that had a song called Knuckle scoring or something about playing NES... originally Genesis was aimed at older ages, not the Nintendo ages even though technically Nintendo aimed at all ages but due to their no blood and violence, they got the reputation for censorship even though Sega of America 90s staff (remember all this talk revolves about the 90s because subsidiary branches like NEC America, Nintendo of America and Sega of America had Final say on how the buyer would eventually see the respective platforms, not just "this system is awesome and games" magic... bad marketing and focusing on hyping bad games and bad practices is what really happened.
      I know you feel that way about Megaman but I recall waiting and even GameFan printed an article where they were also waiting for the English release only to hear crickets... much like what happened to King of Fighters 95 during 96 and all the SNK 1MB RAM Cartridge games and later the Capcom 4MB RAM Cartridge games for Sega Saturn... it was never a "Saturn sucked and failed" but SoA pulling the rug and the plug.
