Small fish curry is a popular dish in many rural villages around the world, and can be made with a variety of small fish such as anchovies, sardines, or mackerel. Here's a simple recipe for small fish curry that you can try at home:
Ingredients:
500g small fish, cleaned and gutted
2 medium onions, chopped
3-4 garlic cloves, minced
1 inch ginger, grated
2-3 medium tomatoes, chopped
2 green chilies, slit
1 teaspoon cumin seeds
1 teaspoon coriander powder
1 teaspoon turmeric powder
1 teaspoon red chili powder
Salt to taste
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
Water
Fresh cilantro leaves, chopped (for garnish)
Directions:
Heat oil in a pan and add cumin seeds. Fry until they start to splutter.
Add onions, ginger, and garlic, and sauté until onions turn translucent.
Add tomatoes and green chilies, and cook until tomatoes are soft and mushy.
Add the remaining turmeric powder, coriander powder, red chili powder, and salt. Mix well and cook for a minute.
Add the small fish to the gravy and mix well.
Add 2-3 cups of water and bring it to a boil.
Cover the pan and let it cook for 10-15 minutes on low heat or until the fish is fully cooked and tender.
Garnish with cilantro leaves and serve hot with steamed rice.

It is a common practice in many cultures to eat fish with your hands, and it allows you to savor the flavors and textures of the fish more fully. You can also use a spoon to scoop up some of the gravy and pour it over your rice or bread.
