The Cause of Hyperia's Troubled Opening - The UK's Tallest & Fastest Roller Coaster

  • Hyperia opened just this year at Thorpe Park as the UK's tallest and fastest roller coaster! It looks extremely impressive and it's a ride I am itching to ride! However, it suffered a hiccup at the start of its season and in this video, we'll take a look at why that likely occurred and the steps being taken to keep the ride operating reliably.

“For those of you who are unfamiliar, a block section is a section of roller coaster track in which only one train may occupy; at the end of each block zone is a method to stop a train in case the section ahead is occupied, this is the safety system in place to keep roller coaster trains from colliding with each other”

They went with an unproven manufacturer, who used their prototype train, and had to make changes to the original lightning trains, so these trains are even more of a prototype than the original lightnig trains.

It's so much better than most of us thought. Every element is exceptional and feels unique. It's much more intense than a B&M hyper. The airtime isn't like an RMC either. Instead of repetitively ramming you quickly into the restraint, elements transition slowly from strong floater to long sustained ejector. You can tell a lot of love went into its deign. It feels closer to an Intamin in terms of airtime but more out of control and uniquely profiled like an RMC. I've ridden around 30-50 of the world's top 100 coasters according to most lists and it's my 3rd fav. Hope you get to ride soon :)

I am a ride host for Hyperia and a big fan of your channel so thanks for making this video! Hyperia is an amazing ride but you are right about the brake run being slow. Often we’ll send a train and have to wait a bit of time for the next train to come in and park. On average we’re hitting around 30-35 trains an hour and that’s mainly due to it crawling on the brake run not because we’re slow with dispatching

I've had 5 rides on hyperia, most in middle rows but one in the back. The first drop is truly incredible and i can garuntee there's nothing like it. If i would be to describe hyperia, I'd say the elements last forever and give sustained airtime/hangtime (some floater, some ejector). The outerbank in particular feels like the airtime lasts a lifetime. In terms of operations, i can confirm the ride ops are doing an excellent job pumping out trains (and one of them cheekily let me have the back row and i love them for it). Best thing we have in the uk by a mile.

About the capacity, from the train stopping in the station to being clear to dispatch seems to be 25-35 seconds of loading and restraint checking, and they are getting trains out the station before the next one hits the breaks consistantly. The length of the entire main queue was specified by the park as an hour and a half, however they seem to be much faster in poractice. Overall the ride crews are great!

I got 3 rides in on Hyperia opening day, and its definitely a world class coaster, fitting in somewhere in the lower half of my top 10, battling with Taron, Twisted Colossus & Gotham City Escape. Each element is excellent, with the first drop and the stall standing out as my favorite examples of those elements so far.
Great explanation! I'd been keeping an eye on it because i was due to go again the weekend after it reopened, however it dropped down to one train ops because it stalled & the train had to be removed and reassembled. Didn't fancy the queues that could lead to so I'm going again in a few weeks. Seems like this issue is resolved so hopefully no more stalls and it should be running reliably again.

It definitely feels like they cheaped out on Hyperia. The ops are dispatching about once every 90 seconds (50 seconds of station time 40 seconds of faff)- with the brake situation they can't do much better than 800pph.
If it ran three trains, even with the endlessly slow transition through the brakes, they'd be able to hit 1200 as a realistic figure - still maintaining their station dispatch time. I do not know why this ride has only two trains.

Park nowadays never run too tight on block, arguably due to stricter safety standard like loading SOP or even the brake run on this thing. Running 3 train will make the 3rd train stuck on lift hill everytime crew can't dispatch it quickly

Most roller coasters that would have this issue deal with it by having a short and shallow drop immediately following the chain ending. This is followed by a short section of track that allows the train to get off of the chain without causing much stress. Look at Indiana Beach's Hoosier Hurricane to see an example of this.
There are other ways of dealing with the stress, but this is the most common for big roller coasters that use a chain lift. Unfortunately for Hyperia, this would require a complete redesign of the first drop.

Going on my birthday on the 6th so excited hopefully crowds will be less but I won’t hold my breath! This is on the top of my bucket list it looks a bit short but who knows the park can always extend the layout if they want to or think it will bring in more crowds hopefully they will

I’ve ridden this and I took full advantage of the 14.9sec of airtime. The drop in will try to kick you outta the seat…, let it and enjoy the free fall.
Best coaster I’ve ever ridden 😎

I can say for a fact that the drop is a phenomenal experience that is unlike anything else I’ve ridden. It’s worth riding Hyperia just for the drop.

I’ve only ridden uk roller coaster s but the back row on hyperia is unexplainable the first drop id the best as you fully get flung over with immense airtime across the rest of the ride its crazy

I went on the opening weekend, so was at the park when i found it it was closed.
Was my first time visiting thorpe so every ride was a new ride for me and it wasn't the end of the world.
Went back and have now ridden it! It's epic. Also better in the back row than the front IMO

I rode hyperia on opening day in the afternoon and was amazed at how quick the dispatches were. The queue was meant to be a 2.5 hour wait but I waited just under 2 hours and was constantly moving - that first drop is insane, and I’ve been on Kingda ka

Whenever you get to visit the UK you should make it a small run of UK parks; here are the top parks to visit first in my mind:
    Thorpe Park
    Alton Towers
    Blackpool Pleasure Beach (for Icon)
Flamingo Land (hugely underrated park and world class zoo, 9 adult creds!)

Thorpe Park need to test the ride daily wit( water dummies in order to avoid any more rollbacks. Hyperia wasn’t meant to roll back unlike Stealth at the same park. I’m hoping they can manage this well and can ensure a smooth operating life for Hyperia. Your video was very explanatory and good by the way so thanks.

I traveled to England from the US to ride Hyperia, but it was closed when I went on 5/25 due to the chain lift and closed on 6/19 because it valleyed. I never got to ride it. 😢

I was at Thorpe Park the day before the rollback, and they definitely did the morning test runs with water ballast in the front 2 cars of the train (maybe more). As for the ride itself, it's very different from other hypers I've ridden - the outer-banked turns are superb for airtime, and the hangtime in the stall inversion is great too. It's not a long ride, but it's excellent while it lasts.

  • @whalesharkboyuk

Due to the duration of the ride itself, they lengthened the brake section to let the train slowly roll down to give the station staff more time to dispatch the train in the station.

  • @coastertubefun8136

I rode it first on opening day once it was amazing, the first drop was probably the best giving airtime all the way till the bottom in the back row, sadly, since it reopened and when I rode it again, the seats closer to the back got a noticeable rattle to it but it’s still an amazing and comfortable though.

Thank you so much for providing the information that Thorpe and Mack are refusing to. They both have absolutely no logical reason to withhold the alleged lift hill polymer problem from the public. Especially as it’s not a safety flaw with the ride.

There is also the issue of it valleying in the morning test runs. Basically they discovered that the more weight on of the people in the actual cars the smoother and faster it runs, so when people ride it, it doesn’t have this valleying issue. But in the morning test runs they weren’t filling the dummy’s all the way up but what they thought was a good enough weight, some tests were done with weight of the cars with the dummy’s and I believe people (park employees and engineers) on and off track which is when the weight thing was found. Now when they test run it in the morning the dummy’s are filled higher to fit a more realistic weight of when the public use it and they haven’t had the issue since.. or at least that is what several employees have told enthusiast.
