- This documents the basic engine rebuild we are doing for a 1.8L VW 4 cylinder that is going in our 1980 Plymouth Horizon being prepped for the 24hrs of Lemons. I'm documenting what is happening so my teammates can learn while we are all social distancing.
Couple edits for the video. Do as I say, not as I do and wear saddles while working on engines. Please wear closed-toed shoes. Also, crankshaft endplay around .020 inches is a bit excessive. We don't have a fancy machine shop so I am taking a lot of liberties to "save" money. The goal here is not perfection, it is to do this on the cheap and get something that will work.

This video contains
Measuring piston diameters
Setting up a dial bore gauge
measuring cylinder bores
Deciding to swap #3 piston to #4 bore
Checking piston ring gap.
Install main bearings
Install crankshaft - check oil clearance with plastigauge
Check crankshaft endplay, sand thrust bearing to achieve minimum clearance
Install crankshaft
Next up will be to put the rings on the pistons, install the pistons/rods, check rod bearing clearances, verify TDC, and finish up the short block.
I first put oil on and set in the crankshaft to see if it spinns smoth or not. AND THAN you should use assembly oil because it turns harder with it. everything else is good.
Get video, one question I have on sanding thrust bearing, did you sand upper and lower thrust bearing.
yes. Both upper and lower
It's a DX motor or EG motor ?
What brand are those bearings?
Great question, I cannot remember. Due to the budget limitations associated with lemons racing, this engine was assembled with the most cost-effective engine rebuild kit I could find. Will it survive the racetrack? maybe?
Lee Childers do you recommend glyco brand? I have a 92 GTI 2.0 16v that needs engine rebuild...
Great information. Do you know what's the piston protrusion of a 1.6 vw 8v engine
