  • This documents the basic engine rebuild we are doing for a 1.8L VW 4 cylinder that is going in our 1980 Plymouth Horizon being prepped for the 24hrs of Lemons. I'm documenting what is happening so my teammates can learn while we are all social distancing.
    This video shows how to
Clean up the intake and exhaust ports
match the intake ports to the intake manifold
    lap the valves
    install valves

Super great video. Thanks for making it. How come you didn't port the exhaust?

i actually bolt the intake drill a small hole on each end of the flange for pins. i pin it gasket and all, unbolt it and then scribe. after you finish use the pins when you torque it and have perfect alignment every time. I found that a LOT of flow come from the valve job angles and the size of the throat. I'm not sure how much flow you gained opening the head side you may have gained some but at the expense of how much port energy? work in the bowl around the guide and pushing the bias toward the center of the cylinder would have yielded better flow at alot less expense. Cutting the intake so that it isnt overlapping is OK and radius the port entry is OK.Adding a lot of port volume is NOT ok unless the gain is so much that it offsets the loss in velocity. the chambers left the valve fairly UN-shrouded but the area between cylinder could gain some low and mid lift flow - if there is room. This Helps a lot on the exhaust side if the engine is turbo. I think the project is awesome and the work you did and the video were great, thanks.

Nice job! We have an 83 GTi that we are racing in lemons and want to pull a few more ponies from our 1.8 8v...any chance you’ve got some time to chat?

I know these engine respond to boost incredibly. I have a 1.8l 8v with a supercharger from a Pontiac gtp on it running 11 psi and I spin all through first and second and torque steer through the rest. I don't know how lemans works so im throwing this out here just in case.
