A sculpt in Zbrush of a demon princess. This one took around 3 hours of sculpting plus a bit to do the render in Maya with Arnold. This is my process of studying anatomy and see where I still need to improve and what could be optimized. I talk about my process as well as my plans for the future of this channel. I'm thinking about streaming either on youtube or on twitch so let me know what you prefer!

Brilliant.
Your understanding of anatomy and proportion is incredible! Mad respect for sculptors, such an impressive skill set.
Thank you very much! I still have a long way to go but it's starting to make more sense anatomically
Your commentary is so on point here. I want to try this workflow for myself and actually pay attention to the proper anatomy. I think it will help me out with some of the issues that I have been experiencing with my sculpts lately. Thanks for the reminder! It's always a pleasure to see your work!
Indeed! I rly need to copy the workflow for the nose and eyes for sure
Really glad to hear that! Thanks for the comment!
can't wait to see something about traditional art! I love your approach and all your videos are super super helpful
Glad to hear that, thanks for the feedback! I'm currently collecting all the equipment that I need to record traditional drawing and maybe even traditional sculpting at some point
Do you see the person's skull when you're talking to them?
sometimes I try to follow the boney landmarks... is that weird?
@@FynnGB Not weird. Rather fascinating how knowledge can sometimes change the way you look at things. Gives a new perspective and quite literally adds "depth" :D
@@Aqualius90 Yes it really does. I first noticed it when I learned more about filmmaking and animation that the experience of watching a movie changed a lot where I would think more about the storytelling structure, technical processes and asking myself questions how they achieved certain things. For me not thinking about any of these things but getting sucked into the movie has become a sign of a great movie.
@@FynnGB Every time i watch now a movie i can feel the big crew behind the camera..
@@Aqualius90 Indeed :)
With 3d modeling i no longer see the world the same way. I see all lines and textures pop up XD
Just found this channel today - omg, what a artist u r! Very beautiful skills and comments!
Yes! You are quite inspiring and I truly enjoy watching your process. I’d love to see more tutorials. Your content is so engaging and I hope you know that. Thanks.
Thank you for the kind words! I appreciate it! It's kind of strange to sit in a room by myself and create something that other people find value in. Sometimes it's hard to grasp that it actually helps people which is the reason why I'm doing these videos and comments like yours are the really motivating me to put more effort into videos :)
Love your Videos with commentary. Helps a lot and motivates to put your tips into action myself immediately! Looking forward to your next videos!
Glad you like them! There is more to come
Thank you so much for your videos. Seeing your work fills me with that fire where I think, "I MUST learn how to make something this cool." It's a hard feeling to explain, but you know it when you see it! Thank you for the crazy motivation!
Thats so nice to hear! I really appreciate it! All the best with you work and practice!
thanks for sharing your knowledge, your skill really awesome
So much skills and knowledges, thank you
You're welcome!
Great work, great advice!
Glad it's been helpful!
Amazing work !
As always amazing work, you always inspire me. Thank you
You're welcome!
An awesome video and very informative in regards to the anatomy and blocking in. Bust's like this would make sensational 3D resin prints.
this is amazing
I really love your workflow, awesome !
Thank you!
You are so great at sculpting! tutorials would be cool and timelasp and stream, rly all of it lol. Keep up the great stuff!

@@FynnGB can you make tutorial on how you do retopology?
This is great piece of art right here!
Thank you very much! I appreciate it
You’re really help me with sculpting! Thx a lot man!💪
You're welcome!
Hi Fynn, this is an amazing approach, thank you for sharing it. I tried to do something along similar lines, by starting with a skull sculpt last week, and today I sculpted the face on top. It's brilliant. Never felt so sure while sculpting a face before.
Awesome! Wish you all the best with your work!
im learning to sculpt in Blender but watching your sculpts really help me in sculpting in general. really inspiring!
Glad you like it! The streams where I will dive into blender will come soon!
Thank you for this tutorial.
amazing work
When I first start learning anatomy the first thing we ( me and my clasmates) made for the first month were skulls, that helped me a lot to understand how faces work.
I started sculpting and learning about human anatomy about a month ago and this is so inspiring. A video in which you explain about the head muscle groups and the thought process when you make a transition from a bare skull to a complete head would be so awesome.
Glad you like it! I will do videos like this in the future and I hope I can cover more techniques and answer questions more directly in the streams
Love it!!!
First time here. Great skill / pace / mood. Thx !!
glad you like it! thanks for the comment
You are one of my favorite 3D sculptors!
You're too kind! I still have a long way to go but I really appreciate your support! All the best
I'm surely more than interested in tutorials and streams held by you!! The demon princess came out really nice in my opinion, and I love the technique of building up from bare bones.
Also, good luck with your relocation!
Glad to hear that! Thank you
c’est juste magnifique j’aime beaucoup ce que tu fais ❤️
Thank you! I appreciate it
awesome art i hope you can keep making videos like this
Thank you! I will make more for sure! Once I'm done with my studies I can commit to a regular schedule
I love yours "Head Sculpt" videos they just inspire me and your work is incredible, tutorials would be very nice and helpful, I'd like if you paint your sculptures, they are already amazing painted they would look even better. Thanks for the videos! 😁😁😁
thank you very much! I'm thinking about reviving my childhood hobby of painting miniatures but this time painting my own ones and if I do that I make sure to share that with you! :) If you like digital texturing my video of sculpting caduceus includes texturing as well
All the best!
Awesome, this is so cool, congratulations bro! 🎉🎉
Thank you, glad you like it!
Looking forward to seeing you use Blender's sculpting features, interested to see if you can tackle common sculpting difficulties the same way as you would in Zbrush. Also you're anatomy knowledge is amazing, good luck with the moving!
Thank you very much! Yes I'm really curious how smooth the experience will be in blender. I think I will try to get a basic overview of the programm before I start to stream it but I wanted to save the sculpting part for the live streams
This is amazing bro! Keep it up
Thank you very much! I will!
Insane video, thank you so much! 👍Instantly subscribed and liked 😎
Appreciate it!
I really love your workflow, it takes me 12 hours to do something as good as yours tho
Amazing
I put the video at 0.25 speed to learn how you carved the horns. I'm starting with zbrush and I try to get as many techniques as possible. Thanks!
Glad it's helpful!
ive seen this great video of some group of people that basically take real human skulls and get taught how every muscle on the face is already written down on the skull, with some techniques they basically sculpt the face of the one whose skull it was, this is how burned victims and etc. are being found back to their families and stuff, the way you sculpted your character reminded me of that process
Thank you! that's a nice comparison. I saw that process in a tv show a couple of years ago as well and was really fascinated by it
Very interesting approach! I will try that myself now as I'm learning 3D sculpting :)
All the best with your practice :)
Yeahhhh keep going!!
I will!
Actually I also always start from the skull. But I think that learning the skull anatomy is more a "side effect" that comes with it and you just dont need to adjust so much later on.Because if yousculpt for example a likeness, you can just start thinking of the skull and have the right proportions right from the beginning. And when you just add the muscles and fat pads, the way they are lying on the face of youre choice, you will get a nearly perfect likeness without needing to constantly change the proportions.Of course you still need to adjust it a little bit, but you will get a really solid face from the beginning.Great sculpt btw;)
Hey man! Thanks for the video. I'm not a usual fan, it's my first time watching you. I'm a blender main, and I just got Zbrush, mostly because being decent at it is necessary for an industry resume, but I've been mostly ok with blender so far. It definitely helps to be able to do everything in the same software. However, Zbrush is popular for a reason... Watching your video made me very excited for Zbrush but I'm also looking forward to your take on blender. I come from a 2D art background, so I also enjoy hearing you spreading the love. I think no one can achieve greatness in 3D without a proper artistic education, sketching, anatomy, perspective drawing, colour composition, etc. So these are wise recommendations from you. I don't watch 2D content usually, but I'd love to see more time lapse in 3D from you.
Thank you for your comment! Seems like we're in the opposite position haha. I'm currently working through the official fundamental series for 2.8 and it's pretty crazy to see how powerful blender is and the fact that it is free is awesome. I'm pretty familiar with maya but if I would start again I would learn blender for sure!
I agree with your view on 2D and maybe I will do some 2D content in the future as well since I like drawing a lot as well
All the best with your Zbrush journey and if I can help you with anything just let me know
dude, I literally watched the video on 0.25 speed and sculpted everyting like you did for my anatomy study. I have learned massive amounts of stuff and didnt know a female head can look so real and impressive. The way I have learned how to make eyes, nose, mouth and ears blew my mind. I have the study progress on my ArtStation.
sorry for the late reply! CZcams didn't notify me somehow
glad you find the video helpful! Hope it boosts your studies!
All the best
This was really good to see a sculpt from skull to skin. Really ensure you nail the proportions that way. Would love to see some of your traditional / digital art. Subbed.
I appreciate it!
The plan is to do some traditional stuff in the near future so stay tuned :)
Impressive work!
Thank you!

I'm just starting with digital art - both Photoshop and Zbrush, and I'm going to watch this video over and over again, in 0.25x speed, just so I can have a grasp on everything you do. This is amazing and I'd love to learn more about you techniques. You just got yourself a subscriber :D
Just found your channel and appreciate your process of building faces from anatomy. to me it looks like you dont take some of the usual shortcuts that I find myself doin in sculpting and am trying to apply it to my own work. a Blender series of videos would be amazing. Im trying to find the workflow for myslef since there doesnt seem to be many videos of sculpting in blender that deal with the latest sculpting tools advancements like multires etc. thanks again for the great content.
You're more than welcome! I'm looking forward to blenders sculpting tools as well so the coming streams should be a lot of fun!
I wish I can put down ideas from my head. Sigh. Awesome work
You can do it! It just takes a while to practice and we are all in the same boat when it comes to that. I still feel like I know very little but when I look back a few years ago I can see the progress which keeps me motivated :) Just keep going on compare yourself what you did yesterday

That's great! All the best with your endeavor!
Amazing work. Wanna see how to paint the model and work with textures
Hi very cool work i like it
Glad to hear that!
Великолепно !
This is epic. 1: can these ever be turned into 3d prints? and 2: If they can, do you? I'd love to paint some of your work.
Since I painted miniatures for several years this comment means a lot to me! Thank you very much and I started yesterday to clean up the princess and it should be uploaded in a few days to be printed
I'm actually focusing more on miniatures and printing right now so there is more to come. Are you more into garage kits, busts like this model, or miniatures?
@@FynnGB I have painted mostly minis, I'm REALLY new to it, but I want to get into busts and everything. Not sure what a garage kit is, but, yeah, anything LOL.
@@UllrT that's awesome! Garage kits are larger miniatures that are often limited collectibles (1:6 scale or something like that)
I will let you know once the model is up. There will be more miniatures coming as well that I will upload on my gumroad account (gumroad.com/fynngb)
I love you so much dude , this is a real art

@@FynnGB how did you get started? i dont know where to start in my approach to 3d art because i pretty much have zero experience with it
Hello, i am low-level 3D-sculptor from Russia. Your videos are very alive and i like the idea of streaming, it's perfect on youtube. As your viewer, i prefer seen videos about your render. It's interesting theme for subscribers. Looking forward for new content.
Thanks for the input! I'm thinking about streaming on twitch but I will probably try out both
Крутая работа. Cool
Thank you!
Exciting how you would approach sculpting in blender!
I'm looking forward to it as well! I'm currently working through the official fundamental series for 2.8 to get a hang of the software but I will save the sculpting part for the livestream that is coming soon. I will give more infos of that in the next video
i understand full skull proportion and facial mucle position with you O_o
keep up man
Glad to hear that it's helpful!
This is just amazing for so many reasons. No, seriously. The level of understanding here is just so clear cut, right from your handling of the software, and in particular to your knowledge of and including your effective application of the anatomy and your vision. Please could you recommend any specific books or sources that helped you achieve this level of excellence? I would be genuinely grateful if you could, I often get caught up in online discussions and end up paralysed for days before committing to trying something new for a few weeks because I often feel like I wasted time given I don't get great results. Thanks so much in advance. I will be studying this video in slow motion for countless times regardless of any additional references/sources you could recommend!
And WTF, only 23k subscribers!? Stop reading the comments and subscribe in order to help endorse this guys channel already!
That's too kind! Thanks a lot for the comment!
I can recommend a few resources: anatomy for sculptors(book), constructive anatomy (george b. bridgeman/book), proko (drawing tutorials), rafael grassetti (anatomy tutorial on gumroad, paid though), scott eaton (anatomy workshop, paid though) and google images haha
Maybe I will do a video of how I learned anatomy and how I would approach it today
@@FynnGB Well, let's put it this way. I started doing 3D art early 2019 and have since been showing my wife the work of others here and there. Normally, she she just smiles and gives a silent nod. Last night, I showed her this and she actually took notice for quite a few moments and said "That's actually really cool" and then started asking questions. That is some significant approval coming from her. It also dawned on me shortly afterwards that this also applied to my art work which typically just warrants a "well done" and honestly that amused me. So basically, long story short is that work that is evidentially built on years of dedication and focus just generally commands respect and this is no different. Modesty is always refreshing, however.
Thank you so much for the sources. I'll certainly be taking a look at these later in the week. I couldn't say that the video you propose would attract as much enthusiasm from the masses as it would from me, but it would probably become a permanent feature in my life for a while along with those sources. For example, I was also looking back through some of your work last night and was watching a video where you did a skull from a reference webpage. That was particularly cool and I think that it is going to be my next several projects in doing that and then trying to apply the ever so subtle differences between male and female skulls. So again, long story short, such a video that you propose would be most welcomed by the very least, one person :)
Keep up the great work!
Thank you Matminster for sharing that! Your comment really means a lot to me. I will make sure to do that video in the future once I have more time at hand (I'm finishing up my diploma film at the moment).
I wish you (and your wife of course as well) all the best and if you have any questions please feel free to ask any time! I'm always glad to help!
Thank you again!
I watched a lot of sculpting videos, tutorials and timelapse, but watching you sculpting is just WOW. You are amazingly good at this it was a joy to watch it. So talented... thanks +1 sub. But you don't have new videos did you stop?
thanks for the kind comment! I was quite busy with work for a while but would love to get back in the groove of doing some videos. Stay tuned!
Beautiful instructional video. Your attention to anatomy is *amazing!* Can you explain your workflow process in creating the ears? Thanks!
Glad you like it! I actually did a tutorial on the ear process that you can find on my channel
@@FynnGB Thanks! Just had a look at it, will give a couple more tries this weekend. :)
I struggle with females a lot as well. But I would like to know, your process of finding likeness? Like is it always anatomy that goes in your mind or do you eyeball as well? Cuz you know there are some cases where we cannot define character from anatomy. Btw awesome content 🙌🏻
Yeah females are pretty hard! I haven't done many realistic likeness sculpts yet but as far as I know it's all about proportion. The anatomy can still be a little wonky but with good placement and shapes of the features you can find a good likeness already. I also like to measure with angles and drawing imaginary lines from let's say the outer corner of the eyes down to the corners of the mouth just to see how they relate to each other. I then do that with the nostrils to the corners of the mouth as well to see in what angle they are to each other. I don't know if it makes sense explaining it that way but it may be an interesting topic for a video
Oh and anatomy is important of course. What helps a lot as well is to know where the fat pads in the face are and how the skin ages over time since it follows certain patterns.
Awesome sculpt! I really love your technique and work flow. It’s helped me improve quite a bit so thank you for sharing this.
I was wondering though how you get such a smooth thin layer over the spheres? When I try it I end up sculpting lumpy mountains 😅
Really glad that these videos help you!
It's a matter of keeping a large brush size and controlling the pressure sensitivity. There is a concept of brush economy in 2D drawing where you try to get to the desired result in as few strokes as possible and that can be applied to 3D as well. So the larger the brush and the more control you have over the pressure the less strokes you need to get to the form that you want. That also avoids bumpy surfaces. You can lower the intensity of the brush to make it easier to get used to that
Hope that helps and all the best with your practice! :)
Your understanding of the human form/anatomy is so incredible. Do you have any recommendations or resources for practicing anatomy?? Incredible work!!
Thanks a lot I appreciate it. I would recommend to check out drawing tutorials (like proko) and then searching for images on google for the specific muscles/bones and starting your own reference library that can grow over time.
I'm working on an online anatomy course but I can't say when it will be finished. I will keep you updated!
Fynn GB Awesome! Thank you for the advice! Can’t wait to see more amazing stuff from you!
If you can share the process of making high detail sculpts animation ready that would be really nice (if you have experience in this realm) streams would be great as well. I really like your videos and sculpts and I’m hoping to see more!
Thanks for the suggestion! If you mean how to get from a 'sculpting topology' to a final model with proper animation-ready topology and displacement maps then that's something that I can cover in the future!
@@FynnGB yes, that's exactly what i mean
Hello Fynn i would like to know how you approached learning anatomy i'm a student and i really wanna learn how to sculpt but i don't know where to really start with character creation and specifically how to practice and what exercices i should do in z brush to learn anatomy should i look up for references and try to reproduce what i see ?
Wonderful sculpture. Have you thought about launching a course teaching this whole method? I would buy =)
Thank you I appreciate it! I do have plans to do a course but it will probably take a while before this is released. I just don't want to put something out that I don't think is ready

Great tutorial for sculpting scull! Can you tell what is DynaWax 128? Why you dont use regular polysphere?
Thank you! It's a default project that you can find in the lightbox under projects. in that file the sphere with the matcap is already set up so it makes for a quicker start as if I would use the regular polysphere
What are the resolutions you use? Every time I start with a sphere it comes out chunky.
I've recently started a bust that I've been wanting to do using this workflow. After you make additions to a subtool (like curve tube or the IMM shapes) how do you swap between them quickly? I'm relatively new to sculpting and don't really know my way around ZBrush (looks like I need to learn more about transpose), though this is similar to the way I process drawing traditionally and I'm having much more fun this way.
You can hold alt and click once on the subtool that you want to switch to. All the best with your practice! If you have any questions feel free to ask anytime!
On a similar note. When you sculpt the nose (or arms here), is it all on the same subtool, just different polygroups? If yes, how do you switch between the groups within the same subtool, so they change colour, showing the active one? I tried to figure it out by myself, but I'm clueless here;(
Hey guys I want your opinion about something. I'm using blender at the moment for modeling, but I already order a tablet to start to learn sculpting. Should I learn it on blender and then go for zbrush or is it worth it to star on zbrush right away. Does it change that much for a beginner to start with the power of zbrush? Thanks!
Hi Rodrigo, since I'm currently sculpting in Blender and can compare it a bit to zbrush I would suggest trying it first with blender just to see if that's something for you. Zbrush is expensive so it would be a waste of money if it turns out you like other aspects of 3D more than that. Blenders brushes are fairly good so you should get a good impression if sculpting suits you. There are some things in blender which are a bit annoying (the polycount can't be that high or otherwise the performance suffers quite a lot) and adding new meshes quickly is different as well.
But since you ordered a tablet already I would suggest just trying it out and if you reached the limits of what blender can do switch over to zbrush :)
That was a long answer but I hope it helps
All the best with your journey!
u are fkin amazing!
no, you are fkin amazing!
Hey! what program are you using to record the whole sculpt process??
I love the material you are working with. How can I get this look? Have You created it yourself?
It's the material that comes with default dynawax128 project and I dial down the wax modifier in the material menu down to around 10-20

woah! this is so inspiring!

@@FynnGB absolutely.. would you ever be interested in receiving compensation on helping indiviudal build their model? Like I'm working on a batman one right now. If you're interested i wouldn't mind compensating you to see how you would approach certain things as far as cleaning it up or even going about it on your approach.
I hail Fynn, gg
Hey, I've noticed that on some of your sculpts, you model either partial/full skull, but I've also seen you skip this entirely, any thoughts on your choice to go either way on this?
It's usually when I don't really know in what direction I want to go in that I start with the skull just to have some forms to play with. When I have a concept, something very stylized or a generally clearer image in my mind I often times avoid sculpting the underlying forms since they change so much when sculpting the surface forms.
I mostly do it for practice and fun as I really enjoy studying the skull and it gives a good framework to see if your proportions and plane changes are in a good place.
If you have practiced sculpting the skull over and over again you will have all the information in the back of your head and all your strokes will be informed by that practice. Can't recommend it enough doing skulls regularly!
All the best
@@FynnGB Interesting response, will think about this. Bonus question, as someone who clearly knows much more about this than I - How much variation do you think there is between induvidual skulls (I understand there are often general differences based on ethnicity) but how much of a relation is there between skull shape and facial variation, is it more the skull that makes a unique face, or is it the muscle and tissues over the skull? If we were to look at 100 different skulls of the same ethniciy age and gender, would there be huge variations between the skull? Can the exact same skull inform unique facial sculps every time, or should variation of the skull also be considered?
@@CACOE_ I've seen quite a lot of different variations. Some are square, some are elongated, others have a pronounced eyebrow ridge, some have a wide jaw, others a very pointy one, the forehead sometimes is higher, sometimes its fading back, and many other differences. So there are many variations!
The thing is: when you know the average skull quite well you will see these differences much better! And having a standard skull as a reference you can exaggerate the differences for design purposes. For examle if someone has a slightly narrower and pointier jaw then the average skull then you can push that even further in your design. But seeing these things becomes quite hard if you don't have a reference point to begin with.
I don't really practice different skull shapes as they come naturally with repetition
what is the fov in prespective mode that ur using?
it's the default zbrush fov should be 50mm
The sculpt you made is great, and watching you making it, from the skull, to the end result, is too. Also the topic you talked about is interesting. I just feel like your way of talking is very slow, and is undermining your vid a little bit. I think more energy would go a long way.
Good luck in the next chapter of your life :)
Thank you for the feedback! This is a point that I'm actually pretty aware of and with which I struggle quite a bit. There is quite a gap between the energy that I feel inside and what I'm excited about and the energy that I convey to other people. I think it is often underappreciated when someone can talk freely with emotion and a pleasant dynamic. I hope to develop that skill over time with these videos and live streams just like sculpting and drawing :D just so I can express my thoughts in a more authentic way
All the best
What kind of graphics tablet do you use?
I have a wacom intuos pro M and a huion kamvas 13pro and they are both pretty good! huion is way cheaper though
6:37 this lowkey reminded me of lord hordak 😅
waw...
1:54 what happened between a CurveTube and nose sphere? I guess some shortcut, but can't tell which one :P
if you mean switching between the two I used the transpose tool (move/rotate/scale) I held down ctrl and clicked on the polygroup that I wanted to isolate with masking
