I think that Harry is so caring, and sensitive, and sweet. But Beth never wanted to be loved by him. He was just so kind and she needed that companionship after her mother died. She also was tougher than him in more ways than one and she was very clear about her feeling of superiority to him. He knew who and what she was but didn't give up on the idea that she was this once in a lifetime girl that he could be with if she just let him. He was intimidated by her. But I think he was the only one who was BRAVE enough to put his feelings for her out there, in full black and white.
He was tougher than her in many ways as well. He was the one that was able to be blunt and face not only his flaws, but hers as well.

I felt so-so sorry for Harry. He seems amazing and so caring. Beth breaks his heart every time.
He's the only one who's there for her after everything crumbles apart. I mean yes, Benny called, but he asked to move to New York, shift for him. At the same time Harry was calling and knocking on the door, just to make sure she was ok.
So many people are swooned by Benny or Townes, but so little even notice Harry. Thank you for the video!

Do you know what? Many people miss this, but the fact is : Beth ignored him (after he said he is waiting and so on), not because she rejected his feeling, BUT it was because before, Harry mentioned Townes, the time when Beth met Townes in tournament, the time they were in Townes' room and then she met his boyfriend, to remember it it made Beth iritated, she felt like a fool. Knowing someone she loves was actually a gay, so he could not love her back. It made her feel like a fool.

@@aurelie2940 I also think she was uncomfortable with showing her feelings, and feelings in general, and Harry's confessions were too much to handle. She was an orphan, and was always used to being on her own, and didn't trust people. Harry was the first person to express those kind of emotions toward Beth, and so it was easier for her to ignore it. She was threatened by that kind of sincerity, intimacy. But when she didn't get the emotional response she wanted from Benny, she was disappointed.

I think that's why she was drawn to Benny, he wasn't emotionally available either. He was just like her in a way, and that's why she was attracted to him. But Harry was so sensitive, and that made her uncomfortable because she wasn't used to someone being so honest, and open with her.

Harry Melling is a fantastic actor, his performance in The Ballad of Buster Scruggs was even more impressive. I am glad that he is getting more recognition lately~
His performance in The Devil All The Time is even more phenomenal! Actually the whole cast. Should definitely check it out on Netflix!
The episode where he calls her, come to the house, moves in, and then leaves is so beautifully acted. It had a much more emotional pull than the Benny-in-NYC episode because with Benny, it was all about chess and sexual tension. With Harry, it was about being emotionally vulnerable with someone, and Beth was not ready for that.
Very insightful! I think Beth always knew how Harry felt. His sincerity & vulnerability scare Beth. The phone call from the guys to Beth in Russia, we can hear the sweetness/thankfulness in Beth's voice when she heard Harry voice.

It's funny how I see so much of myself and my ex in these two. Harry is a gentle soul and likely the only man who truly cared for Beth. I know Townes cares for her but that's as a friend. And I think Benny looked at her as more of a prize. But even if he didn't, I don't think he's capable of actually being there for her. He's quick to anger and a self-centered. But to get back to Harry, he attempted to put himself out there and she promptly changed the subject. He then just finished his work with her and left after showing just how much he knew her. How he could look at her and see the different layers and beyond the facades. He really paid attention. Only to come back at a rough time in her life to attempt to help her as a friend to only receive anger from her. It's so hard but I guess you just do what you feel you should, take the lumps if they come, then calmly walk away after wishing them good luck...

Although Benny and Harry seemed to care about Beth, the truth is, they liked their ideal fantasy of Beth instead of who Beth actually is. Instead of understanding Beth, they just try to change her and judge her a bit. They're good guys but they don't truly love Beth Harmon, they love THEIR idea of who Beth Harmon. Still, there's no doubt that Benny, Harry, and Townes helped Beth in a way to be a whole person.
It's true. Harry was infatuated with the idea of her. I've tried meeting a guy who secretly had a crush on me for YEARS. I could never ever fit the icon of what he dreamt me up to be. It's uncomfortable, because you can only disappoint and you are acutely aware of that.
I don't necessarily agree. Harry was very accepting of Beth regardless of how she was. Sure, he wanted her to overcome her addiction, but not because he wanted Beth to change into his idealistic version of her, but because he was genuinely worried about her. It just became obvious that regardless of what harry felt, it didn't matter because Beth wasn't ready for that kind of relationship. I can't blame that on Harry being disillusioned about who the real Beth was. In fact, I think he actually understood certain aspects of Beth better than she did herself-He was ready to face her demons even before she was.
It seems more like they just wanted her to fix her addiction rather than change who she is as a person. Your addiction is a problem, not something that defines you as a person. Wanting to help them overcome an addiction but still accepting and caring about them regardless doesn't mean they're only liked the "ideal fantasy" of her. It seems more like they loved about her despite her problems, but they still wanted her to get better. There's a difference between changing someone because they personally don't like the way someone's acting versus trying to get them to stop doing harmful things to themselves or others.

I don't quite remember what I was thinking 5 months ago but I think my point was, they projected their image of her unto her, and therefore don't really romantically love her but their idea of her. I think that was my point. But yeah like I said, it's no doubt that they helped her to become a better and less incomplete person. Anyway, I appreciate you for sharing your view, have a good day.

I think he kind of realized at some point that she was never going to love him more than she loved chess, at least not at that point in time. But he was there for her like the rest of them weren’t, if she had let him in a little bit more who knows what could’ve happened? But he still checked on her, called her, drove to New York to be on that phone call with her. He saw Beth like no one else did.

the chess players that were like beth's own chess club and jolene, the sister she had from the day they met
special mention to mike and matt (who are also part of beth's "chess club") but also they are so cute and were beth's first friends outside the orphanage :)
They should end up together.😭 Harry so much caring about Beth and sincere. The scene that he try to confess love to her and her ignored him is break my heart. That so mean and not unfair. If he were good-looking likes Towns,Are Beth gonna love him?

I don't think Beth would've loved him either. She was just too absorbed in her own mind, and I think in the long term, she would have hurted him because she's very competitive and a perfectionist. Harry is a good guy, but he's not perfect nor he sares that much, which is fine, is who he is. But those traits don't seem to go with Beth.

Such a simple yet powerful moment when Beth tries calling out Harry for working at a grocery store and he hits her back with the "I'm doing both. It's a good job and the people are nice." She was really going for that low-blow, but Harry kept his head up high and basically said "I'm not your simp, baby. I may not be someone today, but someday I will be. Just watch." He really was too good for her.

I love these two but you can see how these two cannot make it that long. Harry is constantly chasing her and trying to help her because he loves her. Beth is torn with trying to conquer her inner demons and standing at the top in the world of chess that she has no time to welcome someone's inside her heart especially with Alma, her mother figure passing like her biological mother. He tries to give her advice and helps her but when he realizes that Beth is torn down by everything around her and doesn't loves him back, he steps down but still continues to support her from the sidelines. Beth appreciates him but not in a way we all want and the two are in the line of respect. Maybe Harry still carries his love for but that's about it. He loves her and even if she doesn't, he'll still love her especially when the time comes that she finally gets a clear image of who she is in this world and the world of chess (In which she does).
I watched the Pale Blue Eye and loved it. Then I watched the Queen's Gambit and there he pops up again.
Harry Melling is quickly becoming my favorite actor.
Harry would be such a precious friend for Beth. He cares about her life, not just her career in chess. To me, he seems like a much more perfect suit for Beth than Benny.
