As a teenager way back in the 1950s, Johny Ray, Guy Mitchell and Frankie Laine ruled the hit parade. Still remember all three with much affection. So grateful that material such as this is available via the internet. Thank you so very much. Kind regards to any fans who may be listening to this. July 2022.
Wonderful. Met him backstage at the London Palladium in the 'sixties'. He thanked me for bringing my wife Judy to see him and chat . Still listen to him, along with Frankie Lain , Guy Mitchel and Rosemary Clooney we romanced to in those days.
I'm a 42 year old guy, and I'm looking into the history of pop music. I've always looked for what's influenced the people I've liked, and who they currently like, being young I always went forward. But, this right here is the bridge that connected big band at it's top, but his performance is pure rock and roll. Ps I'll show my daughter this,
i always listened to this beautiful song with my father when i was a child no more than 10 years old, this song was not very popular in taiwan then but we both love it and had its record。now i am 71,i miss my father and this song !
I was about 10 when this was so popular. My Dad had a restaurant and would let the teens come in and dance on Friday and Saturday nights.....It was a wonderful time....so many great songs like this one and so many others still linger in my mind...my wife is amazed at the fact that I sill remember all the words to hundreds and hundreds of songs from the 50s. It is so great to hear them again...million thanks t you tube and to those who load these old ones..I love you all.
I wish I lived in the 50's, great music of which I do listen to as my father sang this songs, as did my mother who liked to sing Tammy by Debbie Reynolds and Vicki carr it must be him
I was a teenager when Johnny Ray came to Singapore and stayed at Raffles Hotel. I was mad about him went to the Airport , Raffles Hotel and to his show. Loved his voice snd all his songs. I am now 82 and will never forget that day. Still listen to his music brings back such wonderful memories. God Bless you.
Uncle jonnie never lived so bright than that night . Great song, Great voice. Long live Uncle Johnnie Ray. He is survived by My father Randal C. Ray. Salem Oregon.
When he played the Palladium in the mid fifties he was an absolute sensation. He broke all box office records and along with Danny Kaye was a gaurenteed sell out every time he returned. He dominated the stage with such a powerful emotional presence,
Seeing and hearing Johnny Ray here, I don't think I've ever heard him better. He hits those notes so perfectly. It took me until the age of 80 to realize how good he was.
Came across ''Walking in the Sand'' by the Shangri Las and remembered this song. Have not heard it since the 60's. Funny, how the mind remembers things from our past.
1950-1955. The biggest male singers, according to record sales, were Johnnie Ray, Guy Mitchell, Frankie Laine, Nat "King" Cole, Tony Bennett, Eddie Fisher and Perry Como. But in 1952, girl singers were prominent, and towards the end of the year, they dominated the charts with hit after hit. Jo Stafford, Rosemary Clooney, Vera Lynn, Kay Starr, Georgia Gibbs, Teresa Brewer, Patti Page and Joni James were some who reached the top of the charts.
Elvis, Bowie, Marc Bolan, Dylan... Johnny Ray. Viewing this video it makes me think that there is something about them that is not just talented at singing but, sharmanistic, other-worldly, about the best of the best. Johnnie Ray was on another plane.
Johnny Ray had some beautiful songs. Love The Little White Cloud that Cried. He put such total feeling into each song as did Frankie Lane and another of my favorites Harry Belafonte. The singers from that period were and still are to my way of thinking the best. The songs made a bit more sense at that time too. Would like to correspond with anyone that feels the same way. Thanks for bringing these back for pure pleasure. God bless.
I'm so glad I found this gem, plus links to other Johnnie Rae songs. I was 11 in 1956, but this song stuck around for years. I can fully appreciate now how good he was. I spoke to him on the telephone one time as I was a friend of an agent he knew well. Fascinating!
I remember my mom listening to him (she had studied opera) and tho he was far from opera she really liked him....I do also. He was a star just before rock & roll knocked him off the charts.
Saw Johnny at the kings hall Belle View when I was a teenager. As soon as he came on stage all the girls started screaming including me. Great voice. Full of emotion. I too had a trench coat. Loved it.
It started raining lightly about an hour ago. I asked my wife if she wanted to go for a walk in the rain. Walkin' in the Rain, and Johny Ray immediately came to my mind. I haven't heard the song in about 60 years. It's great to hear it again. Thank you!!
My dad was a massive Johnny Ray fan. Years ago when I was very young, I learnt this song for his birthday. There I was belting it out "all because my heart, all because my heart, all because my heart," didn't know there was a scratch on LP and the song jumped. Honestly thought he repeated that line three times. Still find it difficult to sing this song without repeating that line.
Great story. Reminds me how my daughter's Linda Ronstadt record, Different Drum, had a similar skip. To this day, in her 50s, she prefers the "skip" version. 😂
This is the only song of his that I ever knew, but Ive never forgotten it. I used to hear this on the radio when I was 11, in Havana, where Im from. Great voice, great song. Loved it even though I couldnt understand the words back then. Rock was huge all over the world and it affected young people everywhere just as much.
Johnny Ray was, and still is my Hero. When I was 19 I tried to sing his song Cry where ever there was a possibility. Now 66 years of age, I'm singing Standards in my own Jazz Combo and still want to sing Cry, but the other guys don't want to play it. Maybe when we put a little swing in it? I just wanted to say that Cry is still a very good song.
Stupid me, two months later I'm thinking how the presenter sounds like Frankie Laine and it IS him! Another idol from my chilhood, how fantatic is CZcams and its wonderful posters, thank you for the pleasure you spread.

To me its a great song very well composed with the Band stopping playing at the cruital moments , to allow The Singer to sing his words most clearly and musically then the Band carrie on ; a great musical accompliment to an even Greater Singer

Love to hear the strong, emotion-charged voice of Johnny Ray. So talented that not even his being partially deaf stopped him (hence the hearing aid he wears in the video clip). There's nothing like a singer whose voice fits the mood of a song. Well done. Thanks for sharing.

What a performance!!! I especially like the second song "If I had You". Never herd him sing that one before. He was a true jazz singer and one of the best. He has never gotten his due credit.
Nobody can sing like Johnnie Ray, got both Bear Family Records Box Sets that are a total kaleidoscope of phenomenal performances, induct this brilliant original to "Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame" where he belongs, even Tony Bennett cites him as a true innovator bringing in rock & r&b in the early 50's plus his loose on stage performance before Elvis!
Johnnie Ray - Just Walking In The Rain 2147pm 31.12.22 we all like him. his tears must erase any angst or ire you may feel for his act... and he was deaf!!!!

As a former Johnnie Ray groupie when I was 14, (now 82), I must say that I loved how he did "If I Had You". Loved it!
