    I see a lot of people commenting about the angels, and how they don't look like angels. I believe this is because the narrator seems to directly blame the angels for killing Annabel Lee. So of course the narrator wouldn't see them as beautiful, light creatures of God.

      Remember the Angels in some Bible story were guarding all the roads out of a certain city against a certain person leaving? Angry they were as they gripped their swords. Angry, fierce, ugly. As anyone who interferes with your life would appear .

      They think it a reference to yellow fever and the kingdom Charleston South Carolina Poe attended a military academy there when he was young and there a legend he fell in love with a plantation owners daughter and the family sent here away from Charleston to try and break them up because Poe was a working class norther and she was a member incredibly wealthy family who owned hundreds of aces of cotton land and was expected to marry such she caught yellow fever and died as result of her being sent away poe stared drinking and gambling during his time there so that possible Poe bumping into a her at a book store in poetry section or doing interdicted by another member of the academy who was a wealthy plantation owners son being escorted home father allowing it believing it to be simple puppy till it spiraled to something serious

    I think the DP did a fantastic job. I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it either. What did it matter that the man was a Jew and a Confederate soldier? The camera panned right in on his CS belt buckle within the first 90 seconds, and later we see a photo on the bedside table of a man with a Confederate battle flag draped across his lap. The director really seemed to want to make that point and I can't figure out why. Those questions plagued me throughout the entire film, so much so that it detracted from the love story of two people who couldn't be kept apart, even in death. Also, I think it would have been better if it had been shot in black and white, or sepia. However,not to be too critical, it was well done, the music was perfect, the actors looked great and the poem is one of my favorites of all time.

    • @Storylosopher
      @Storylosopher  Před 9 lety +1

      +Todd Lowe Thanks for your input! You're one of the few people to have noticed such details. I wanted to ground the story in something more than just "sometime, somewhere in the 1800s" and I picked Jewish Confederates. It also fit the themes of the film even if it's not in the original poem. As for the sepia, it would have felt gimmicky to me. Maybe if I do another antebellum film, I'll go more monochromatic! :)

    I interpreted that the man and woman were obsessed with each other, and when she died, the man went insane. He made up insane theories of angels killing her in his moment of madness and then he killed himself. I think he commited suicide because he says nothing can dissever them, so he kills himself to join her in the afterlife.
