I have broken up my gear needs into 6 basic areas. 1.the back pack 2.shelter 3.sleep system 4.clothing 5.cook system and water prep 6.health and safety.I will also show you how I pack my gear into my back pack. #hiking #backpacking #olderhikers
You are inspiring young lady.. nothing i enjoy more then seeing people doing outdoor recreation in their retirement years instead of sucumming to sitting around on the lazy boy/girl chair! Im in a cycling club and have ridden with people 20,30 yrs my senior ( im 56) on charity rides doing 50+ miles if not more , it completley gives me hope i can keep doing the same, bravo! Ps. I would love to see a pic of you when you first started hiking/camping, i know ya have them 😉👍
I’ll look around in the archives 😂
@@wendyoutdoors2230 lol 😅👌
Great looking gear, Wendy. I hope the mountain isn't too daunting and that you have a most wonderful time. Go gently.
Home now, tired and in one piece- will do a video while in a bit-
Thank you so much for the video Wendy. You approach for us older adventurers is appreciated. Have a great trip!
How old is old?
Guess I will know when I know🤞
you have such a warm and inviting aura, Wendy! I've been binging your videos for the past week
thank you so much for giving all you time to me- most appreciated
Awesome, love your presentation that makes success doable instead of overwhelming for many of us. Hope your family knows that your videos inspire so many of us to get out and enjoy nature. Guess they know about the super star in the family. Thanks Wendy.
thanks Marie- well not a super star but they love me anyway!!
Excellent video, and spot on! I can't see a thing you're doing that I wouldn't for the trip. *Except I detest hiking in heat, refuse to. I'm picky and love the cold. 😅 I completely agree, "Function over make". Who cares what make or brand when hiking? I sure don't. The trees and wildlife aren't going to care. Far too many gadgets in the camping aisle to sway ppl otherwise. Thanks for sharing! Have a wonderful family hike ♥🥾🥾🌲🌲
thank you very much- a real treat going with them for sure.
Love the idea of bringing the Durston pole when base camping so you can have a trekking pole for day hiking. Thanks!
Any time!
Wendy, you are my FAVORITE … Thank you so much for all your videos ❤
thank you for watching Monique
Looking forward to your trip video. Enjoy your family time ⛺️
I will thanks
Hi Wendy, so excited for you upcoming adventure! Learned a lot from your demo. I watched a video recently on tips for camping. This guy tied a red piece of cordage on the zipper that had his first aid kit! I thought it was very smart. I hope you have a great time! Stay safe and enjoy.
that is another great tip- thanks for that.
I got confident to go Back country camping after l watched tour video...thank you 😃
Wendy is so inspiring that I just did my first solo camping trip thanks to her videos convincing me it was attainable. Congrats on your success in the backcountry!
I hope it went well for you Caterilina
Thanks Wendy, you are an inspiration. Just hearing you discuss this information makes me feel like I've made some good purchase decisions. I just have to get out there and do it.
You are so welcome!
Wow! Fantastic info! Thank you, Wendy. I’m sure one of your grandsons would be honored to carry your chair❤ Can’t wait to hear how the family trip went.
will let know for sure.
Excited for you!! Enjoy!!
thank you
Thanks for sharing your backpacking gear! I hope your family trip goes well! I live in the desert. In the winter I wear a baseball cap, but the rest of the year I find wearing a hat that has a brim all around keeps the sun off of me and I am a lot cooler!
Thanks for the tips!
Thanks again Wendy for excellent info and guidance😊
Glad it was helpful!
Hello 👋 Wendy, thank for sharing this informative video. You are set for almost any emergency. Stay safe out there and have a great time. 😊
many thanks Ronald- will sure do my best 🤞
Take your chair. Anytime I decided not to take it on a trip I regretted it later. Thanks for sharing and enjoy your trip.
I just did that but I couldn't add the weight this time. I longed for it though
Useful video learn some things thank you for sharing. Have a great time.
Thank you too
Looks like you will have everything you need, and I hope you'll be able to take your chair too. I'm also at the age when just a smidge of sitting comfort is very welcome. Enjoy your trip with your family; be safe and well. P.S. I love that painting behind you. The colors are just beautiful.

thanks so much Jan-
This video was so helpful! Thank you so much Wendy!
you are most welcome
Thank you Wendy!
❤
All great advice and gear Wendy I always carried fleece pants instead of long underwear they are more comfy and are great for hanging around camp.If you use a plastic Lawn trash bag on the inside of your pack everything will stay dry and works so much better than a pack cover most long distance hikers use the trash bag method .Instead of the chair maybe one of those mini foam pads I carried one and it made a good seat also a wind screen, dog bed, pillow etc.
As always Gary- thanks for the great ideas. I did have a foam pad but didn't think of using it for other things as you mentioned. The chair did not make the cut🙁
@@wendyoutdoors2230 I think thermarest makes a mini pad I used it for my dog and then started bringing it for me I used it for a floor mat in front of my tent door also.
Good video Wendy, thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!
I see some Misha Smart art! 🖌️
absolutely- I used to live on Piers Island
Love it can’t wait to see you next video
i look forward to sharing it with you when done.
Thanks Wendy. I will be passing this on to my daughter who was just bitten by the backpacking bug
thanks very much Barry- Hope it helps her little bit
Have a great trip! Enjoyed your loadout and look forward to your next video.
thank you
There she is!!!!! Sorry Wendy for being late, I got sick again. 22 pound pack?! Holy smokes that's heavy!!! As for packing your pack, I know how you do it! You're a Tetris Master!!😂 My husband is the same way. Me, I am not so great at it. My husband and I hope you enjoy your trip!!! Be safe and well dear lady.
thank you- yes, the pack was too heavy. thankfully my family is strong! They helped.
Thank you for sharing 😃
my pleasure
Your back packing gear tutorial was fun to watch. I haven't backpacked since the 1990s but still enjoy watching your video about it. I wish you and your family a fun back pack trip! 🗻🏕🌈 I can't wait to watch the video of your adventure! Jenny
thanks Jenny
Very nice and informative video Wendy ❤👍
Looking forward to see more outdoors adventures
thank you. looking forward to doing more.
❤❤❤❤❤❤ You Wendy!!!
Thanks
Isn’t it amazing that all that fits in your backpack and only 22 lbs! Good stuff (haha, that’s a bit of a pun ;)
Well Cathy, I confess that with all the elevation I had to climb it was far too much for this old gal !!!
@@wendyoutdoors2230 well, I know how tough elevation can be as I have backpacked on the Appalachian Trail but not for 10 yrs now. I like to say we don’t slow down as we get older, we just get a lot smarter and don’t do crazy things!
@@wendyoutdoors2230 it looks like me response didn’t send :( Hope you’re not seeing this twice. Anyway, I totally understand as I have backpacked on the Appalachian Trail a few times and those elevations are hard!! I haven’t backpacked first 10 yrs now :(
👍
Don't know anyone who backpack's, n I never have but i do glamp camp, so this is interesting. 🍻
Whole new world for sure. However, nothing wrong with glamping- i do that too
Just came across your channel yesterday
I really enjoy your videos.
Your cabin on the lake is beautiful & cozy looking.i love nature
I'm from upstate NY in the Adirondacks & lived in Vermont for years.
I love camping (tent), kayaking, fishing etc...
We have a 2 year old & a 8 month old so camping in a tent is a challenge. Our 2 year old unfortunately isn't a fan. But we set up in the woods behind our house & camped a couple weeks ago. My 2 oldest camped with me (I have 2 older boys not biologically my husband's) 16 & 12 year old boys.
We love cooking & making coffee on the camp fire too.
We are making a trip out to Green Lake this weekend to kayak and swim. Have you ever been there? The lake is so beautiful with its unique color. What state are you in? What states do you camp in?
Green Lake in Fayetteville NY
I live on Vancouver Island west coast of Canada. Your story reminds me of my past with young kids and tents. Have a great time with your family
😄😄😄 Cheers.
thank you
@@wendyoutdoors2230 Rightous gratitude M'lady. Always enjoy youe CZcams presentations. Stay well & safe and have a wonderful time on your upcoming venture. Cheers.:-)
☺️👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
THANKS WENDY FOR THIS VIDEO. I DON'T CAMP OR HIKE @ THIS TIME, BUT LIKE TO BE IN THE KNOW IF I WERE TO. CAN YOU EXPLAIN A, BEAR BANG STICK & PELLETS??? I THINK I KNOW. SO HOW DOES IT WORK & HOW DOES IT AFFECT THE BEAR???? WILL BE LOOKING FORWARD TO YOUR CAMPING EXPERENCE W/YOUR FAMILY!! ** HOPE YOU GOT T GET YOUR CHAIR TO COME ALONG??? Do take care. Fl., USA
A bear banger is a small device which can make a loud noise like a gun shot in hopes of scaring the bear away. Most successful if used while the bear is a good distance away. Bear spray is used when the bear is approaching directly.
You don’t need a bear canister for your food? And, what is a bear banger?
I don't need a bear canister if the park provides bear hangs or food caches. If not I carry cordage to make my own bear hang- A bear banger is a device which you screw a cartridge to . When it is released it makes a sound like a gun shot. Very loud, it deters wildlife if it is some distance from you. Bear spray is what I have for a closer encounter. Thankfully haven't needed either.
❤❤❤❤❤
In one of your videos you mentioned your “food cache”. Do you have a video that describes that and how you manage it? Much thanks!
It is a welded aluminum box on legs that the parks people install it locks with a carabiner sorry don’t have a photo keeps critters out.
Is there a backpack that has some kind of pouch that you can sling over to the front to adjust the weight when going up hill? I'm old enough that I think about gravity wherever I go, LOL😆
I have not seen one like that- sorry
😊
God speed Wendy!
many thanks
Hi.
Just found your video.
Will be going to Newfoundland at the end of this month for about three months.
I still wonder how many t-shirts i should bring along. How many pairs of socks... You convinced me to get wool ones. But won't they chafe my feet at the beginning?
P.S. Ever done the T'Railway trail in Canada?
Thank you!
Newfoundland is very very far from where I live on the west coast so sadly I have no idea about appropriate clothing there. Wool socks are great and if they are Morino wool or good quality hiking sicks they are not itchy and don't chafe. The trans Canada trial is not really something I have ever done. Where I live much of it is on roads and through towns or down highways with some actual trails along the way. I have hit spots of it but never done it seriously. I hope you have a wonderful time in Newfoundland It is supposed to be very beautiful and friendly

Will have to return to Chilliwack one day... They have some 26 trails...
