    • @dial-a-llama
      @dial-a-llama Před 8 lety +27

      +akawhut The lonely assassins they used to be called. No one quite knows where they came from but they're as old as the universe, or very nearly, and they have survived this long because they have the most perfect defense system ever evolved: They are quantum locked. They don't exist when they're being observed. The moment they are seen by any other living creature they freeze into rock. No choice, it's a fact of their biology. In the sight of any living thing they literally turn to stone, and you can't kill a stone. Of course, a stone can't kill you either... but then you turn your head away... then you blink... and oh yes it can. They're coming. The angels are coming for you... but listen, your life could depend on this: Don't blink, don't even blink! Blink and you're dead. They're fast, faster than you can believe. Don't turn your back, don't look away, and don't blink! ...Good luck.

The Weeping Angels are an alien race that when anyone is looking at them, they are stone statues, but as soon as you look away or Blink, they can move very fast and will try to kill you. The Dr Who phrase about them is "Don't Blink"

    I wouldn't say crossing your arms is viewed as arrogant here in Finland. It can be done in that manner but also without being arrogant at all.

    • @antivanti
      @antivanti Před 8 lety

      +Ville Nummisalo Yeah I'd think crossing your arms and leaning back could be interpreted as arrogant in any western culture anyway.
      How is it with keeping constant eye-contact over there in Finland btw? Is that still considered a bit weird? Either aggressive or like you're making advances. Or has that pretty much changed to the western standard of a generally good thing? I know here in the north of Sweden it has pretty much changed but it can still feel a bit weird to lock eyes when speaking to someone.

    • @BitterspitBand
      @BitterspitBand Před 8 lety

      +Anders Öhlund I don't think eye-contact has ever been that big of an issue here. Or maybe I'm just too young and it's not anymore. It might be considered a little bit flirty still I think but it depends the way you do it. But I think it hugely depends on individual how much they keep eye-contact. Finnish people are usually a little bit shy and awkward socially so not keeping a constant eye-contact definitely isn't weird.

    • @antivanti
      @antivanti Před 8 lety

      Bitterspit Yeah for people born in the 80's or later it's pretty much a non-thing here (north of Sweden) but older generations would probably have thought it was a bit weird back in the day. I guess it also depends a bit on if one is a "city kid" or not.

    • @AdamEronenPiper
      @AdamEronenPiper Před 8 lety

    • @Villex93
      @Villex93 Před 8 lety

      Anders Öhlund I guess in Finland we tend to not have constant eye contact for long. It makes me feel uncomfortable but it doesn't feel like an learned habit. Also I don't know how much is normal elsewhere.

    • @Kelsphere12
      @Kelsphere12 Před 8 lety +1

      +Dave Brown It is actually a reference to the show Doctor Who. The Weeping Angels are aliens that can only move if you don't look at them, or BLINK. So there are multiple frames to show they are getting closer to killing you, the viewer, as you blink more and more.

    • @CharlieDBrown
      @CharlieDBrown Před 8 lety +1

      I know buddy. I watch Doctor Who actually! That's part of the reason it didn't really "scare" me (well that and the comments spoiled it so I was expecting something to happen). Anyways, I think that to anyone who didn't know about the angels or Doctor Who that it would have been much scarier if each "appearance" if you will was slightly less frames. Then they wouldn't be as certain if it actually was intentional or if they were just seeing things, which I think would actually be scarier

  • @iremo.1841

    Nodding does not mean "no" in Turkey. It means "yes". Maybe you meant slightly bending your neck back once and clicking your tongue at the same time, because that actually does mean "no", although in a very informal or child-like way.

  • @wulfbana
    @wulfbana Před 8 lety +1

    Hi! Brazilian here. This video is pretty cool, but I'd just like to point out that the bit about the "horns" hand sign is misinforming.
    First of all, our country is HUGE, so body language is as radically different between states as it would be between separate countries. That being said, the horn fingers thing is used for unfaithful spouses, yes, but only in very specific regions, and by very few people (mostly older populations). Comparatively, for the most part Brazilians use it as Americans do - because rock and roll has reached almost the whole of Brazil, so since the 60s the meaning of the gesture is being assimilated and suffers a radical change. It now means, in the majority, Rock. Some people also see it as a symbol for the Coisa Ruim, the Devil. I've known magic users in the Southeast region to use it as a means to purify bad things, "tirar mau-olhado".
    I'm only saying this because you video gives the impression that our entire country uses that sign with THAT specific meaning, when actually those people are the minority - and they grow fewer in number every year, as American culture and music get more ingrained in our society.

    The head tilting thing is about perspective (and it's also used in photography). Tilting your head forward will make your forehead look larger and your chin smaller, which we associate with femininity. Whereas tilting your head upward will make your chin appear larger, which we associate with masculinity.
    Add to that men are on average taller than women (from the same ethnic/regional group), and the effect becomes even more pronounced, since Mr Average looks at a downward angle at Ms Average, whereas Ms Average looks at an upward angle at Mr Average.

    In Korea you can also not call people to you with a finger (also only done to animals, might be the same in other South East Asian countries as well).
    Isn't it considered impolite everywhere to shake hands without taking your gloves off? (Central European speaking here) - Also, I hate shaking someone's hand, why can't we all just bow to one another?
    I mirror people sitting next to me in lectures and at the theatre and such. Always slightly annoying when I realize I've been doing it again.

    Wouldn't say that shaking hands with a woman is not appropriate in Russia. People just don't tend to do that. I shake hands with women all the time in business situations.
    Also, in Russia, it's not appropriate to give out a hand to shake to an older person first. Though only old folks tend to take notice.

    In Korea, when calling a friend over, you should wave your hand palm down. When you you summon people by pulling palm up, it's like calling a dog. :)

    In Russia, it's not "frowned upon" to shake hands with a person of opposite sex. It's common for men to greet each other with a handshake and for women - depending on age and relationship between the two - a kiss on the cheek (once) or a nod. Of course, if a woman reaches out to shake hands with a man or vice versa (or a woman offers a handshake to another woman, for that matter) it will be generally accepted. It just would be a bit out of place. Unless it's business.

  • @ppseprus
    @ppseprus Před 8 lety

    In Hungary as well, you should take off your gloves for a handshake!
    And while on a classical music concert, you can, if you want to, close your eyes. People, who don't go to such concerts that often, will think that you're sleeping, but it's otherwise totally accepted.

    Too fast transition between facts. I find it quite hard to absorb everything as it is presented. A short pause between each fact I think it might have helped.

      Same. Sometimes in these episodes I need a moment to process the fun fact, 'cause I'm really thinking about it. And then I miss the beginning of the next fact.

    I am a brazillian, from São Paulo, and I actually never heard of "horn fingers" meaning one's spouse is a cheater.
    We do say that a man whose spouse cheated on him has horns, or that his spouse gave him horns, or even that he was "horned" by his spouse, but I have never seen someone making a hand gesture of any sort to comunicate that.
    For me the horn fingers hand gesture means "metal" (the music genre) or "the devil".

    In standard etiquette, it's STILL considered impolite for a man to offer his hand to a woman; if she offers hers, he gently, and briefly, shakes it. Same in all western countries, traditionally. This is not to scold or preach, but to note how quickly our casual-Friday-every-day world has jettisoned tradition.

    "No" isn't exactly nodding in Turkey. It's one movement where you tilt your chin up, combined with a kind of a "chirping" sound made by the tip of the tongue.
    Otherwise, nodding mean just agreeing like in the west.

    in Greece, a nod as shown in the video, is a yes. Half a nod upwards, accompanied by a sound "tsou" means no.

  • @TheTolgun
    @TheTolgun Před 8 lety

    Noding doesn't mean no in Turkey. I don't know about Greece but when I was in Bulgaria, I've learnt that it is as you've described.
