I had this conversation with male coworkers. They were right wingers who said it was impossible for them to tell. I said that it was ridiculous to pretend like acknowledging someone of the same sex is objectively pretty or handsome means there's any attraction. I looked my female coworker, and said "i think she's pretty, see how easy that was? " Then they said it's different for girls. Then my good friend who was the Alpha of the guy group He was a ripped, country lumberjack looking dude. I called him over and I told him the story about a male coworker who had no issue acknowledging that a guy was who worked there previously was a good looking dude. (He was) he said "it's true, I'm just not blind)

Plenty of old "college humor" movies, such as "Back to School" with Rodney Dangerfield, where the popular masculine kid is wearing crop tops. While it fell out of fashion in the late '90's and 2000's it still stuck around in our sports training gear/under shirts in football.

I’m in my early 49s. This “trend” has literally been a thing by the macho guys my entire life. Only a dork with no abs could have complained about this.
Yup. I'm 50, and remember plenty of movies from childhood on where the manly men were in crop tops, often paired with tiny shorts. I was never into it, partly because I never had the abs for pulling it off myself, and partly because I'm not attracted to other guys but I was never threatened by it.

This reminded me about the summer I spent with my father in 1984 and he bought himself, my brother and I summer clothes that consisted of several shirts that were crop tops with sports logos on the front. His reason was that those shirts would keep us cooler in the summer sun. I think fashion can provide an aesthetic and also be utilitarian. People wear what they want because it makes them, and them only, comfortable

I can just imagine Ben time traveling to past times, and he loves how archaic and backwards everything is, but the sight of men in high heels (which men wore in the past and were invented to be used by men) causes him to freak out and want to keep going further back in time until he's with the cavemen.
Then there's all the time when 'men in tights' was the norm, after 'men in dresses' became unfashionable (being left to the clergy, in their vestments). All young children still wore dresses well into the 19th century, and because pink was classed as just a type of red it was an 'active' colour stereotypically associated with masculinity more than 'passive' femininity.
FWIW in the throwback sport of English fox-hunting (on horseback, following a pack of dogs) the men traditionally wear jackets in a flashy shade of red still called 'hunting pink' while the women's are black.
