IMO, The biggest problem with "Aadujeevitham" is that during the promotions there was so much backstory/kathanakathakal told on the hardships of making this film that it feels like a sin to criticize this film or blessy. Say anything tha you did not like about this film and people will be like but blessy spend 16 years on this film alone so he knows better.

I haven't read the novel..maybe thats why this movie emotionally connected with me. Comparing the novel and film is not a good thing. For me Aadujeevitham is an one-man show film..i really liked Prithvi's performance as Najeeb.

Even ignoring that it's based on a book, the movie mostly focuses on what physically happens to Najeeb. We spend almost no time in his head. All the themes are handled at a very basic level. I liked the movie for what it could be instead of what it is.

@ashishhnk that would require lot of internal dialouge and movies can get boring with that. The only way to do it is by cutting beggening scenes and escape scenes. Already 3 hours, I belive it did capture the essence of human suffering and macro level issue of modern day slavery that exists today.

@fvinex bro this is exactly Baddy's point bro. He clearly says that in adaptations a book must be metaphorically destroyed and only the essence must carry on to the screen. He accepts the cinematic vision for what it is and yet, despite that, feels the screen adaptation lacks internality. He's given the movie a fair shot, given it a good think, and articulated his feelings well for us. Fair enough!

And what I got was a very well filmed yet a loose melodrama with frequent cuts and loud music (most of the times) and less emotional drive.
It was never a survival thriller, it should've been a life struggle of a naive person and his bond towards the circumstances he is in. And these things were in the movie but explored very less (it comes and goes in a wink) and finally the good arab and the very nice rich arab.... seriously wtf??? I loved the movie. Technically, its a masterpiece. The Performance of all of the actors is mind blowing, but I have a similar opinion too. My mom read this book to me when I was 8 years old, she finished it within hours, and tears were rolling down my cheeks, I had a deep connection with the Najeeb in the book, but failed to have a connection with the Najeeb in the movie. The turbulences he had to go through and the inexplicable solitude that tortured him internally were depicted in the book but failed to attain its full form in the movie. The movie gives importance to the journey through the desert to escape, but in the book, much more importance is given to his life in Mazra, the way he simultaneously developed a camaraderie with the sheep, camels , goats etc, his whole life became them, he gradually accepts his fate. The emotional toll the book had on me was much greater than the toll the movie had on me, many heartbreaking scenes were left out, ultimately the movie is really good, but Najeeb's real and raw emotions were better conveyed through the book than through the movie....( Just my opinion ).

1000% perfect movie is a mirage like the one we see in Aadujeevitham. So I guess the audience and the critics should stop making such assessment on what that movie missed, and focus instead on what good things that movie has. Aadujeevitham I watched in Pune in Malayalam language without English subtitles. I am from Maharashtra so no awareness of that beautiful language but this movie required no language for me. It was so captivating and visually rich that I could understand it very well without subtitles. What more I can ask from a movie ?

The film was so underwhelming. The desert escape scene was too long and bored tf outta me. The book is 100 times better. In the book, najeeb names a newborn goat Nabeel (the name he chose to name his own son). He saw that goat as his son. And in the movie, not only that is not even mentioned it, he literally has no relation with the goats. And hence couldn't connect with me emotionally.
Prithvi only focused on physical trauma and transformation. What about the mental trauma? Nothing was subtle. Everything was in your face. I expected that because it's prithviraj. He doesn't know how to be subtle lmaoo. And the music was underwhelming except for the periyone song. Overall, it was very average but their marketing team deserves a good percentage of the profit because that's how the marketing of this film was! Effort, hardwork of "16 years", etc which all made the audience guilt trip into watching the film and liking it lol. That's intelligent.

This review explains exactly how I processed. I honestly felt this movie failed to keep the audience connected with Najeeb’s character in the second half. This movie doesn’t justify the book. Affection with the animals are wrapped up in 30 seconds in the end. Dessert traveling was dragged unnecessarily.

  • @ajithag8163
    @ajithag8163 Před 5 měsíci +46

When this guy says this movie should have been far more moving, this is what the real life character has faced. It wasn't moving for Najeeb, the only thing every time he was going through was the endless desert. There are several scenes in which Najeeb shows his care to the animals, from which one scene is taking those sheep to a cave when it's raining and he has a bread crumb for him but still he sacrifices to feed the sheep. There is a scene where he interacts with the camel and says I am going back home and would never return, that's where the Camel's eye shot was shown like a camel raising its head to look at Najeeb with tears in its eyes and many more scenes. And for those who don't know that Aadujeevitham was a 4 hours 45 minutes movie after its first cut which was trimmed down to a 2:52 hours movie. And also the Director and the real life survivor has said in an interview that a lot of scenes which were shot that were raw and real based on the novel were asked to be removed from the movie by the censor board. Now that's where the Indian Movies lack to showcase the full potential of any movie Presented to the Cinema audience. If the scenes are for adults then either restrict it to an 18+ or 21+ audience. They won't do that, instead they want those scenes not to be shown. So they are the ones who need to be blamed if few of those audiences felt the movie wasn't moving. Director Blessy has clearly mentioned in the interviews that they never wanted to show what the readers have imagined while reading the novel, instead he wanted to show what Najeeb went through, his emotions, how the escape happened, the bonding with his wife which we do not get to see while reading the novel. This movie adds many more scenes which weren't mentioned in the novel.

The performance of prithviraj and the whole character arc felt very natural from the get go, that's why it hurt so much watching him suffer. But again, a big reason behind this level of connect I had with the character was because I had no interaction with him previously, that is, from the novel.
The moment you read the source of the adaptation, your views and opinions are automatically gonna be skewed, because you have that character portrait made from the book in your head already as an external reference.

I watched the Hindi dubbed version of 'Aadu Jeevitham,' and since Prithviraj dubbed for his own character, I felt like it was just as good as the original Malayalam version. Prithviraj's performance felt like a milestone in Malayalam cinema; it had an international quality to it. The direction, screenplay, camera work, and music sound mixing were top-notch and felt on par with the best Malayalam films. Since the story is well-known to most of us, the impact of the narrative struggle wasn't as strong, but it's still a must-watch for every Malayali around the world to witness one of the finest works in our industry. For those who have immersed themselves in the novel and delved into its intricacies, this review would be justifiable. However, regarding a three-hour movie, the makers portrayed most of Najeeb's and his companion Hakkim's emotions very well, contrary to what the reviewer suggests. The character arcs of the protagonist and his co-actor, Gokul, are trivialized in this review by magnifying the minuscule shortcomings of numerous minor characters who do not even have five minutes of screen time.

The protagonisit is seen expressing only his pain and sorrow throughout the film but harldy portrays his feelings for the animals that he lives with. More intricate and subtle portrayal of his captive life could have been highlighted. His inner thoughts and motivation are completely missing. Blessy has also added too much melodrama I think. The pacing of the movie is another problem. The ending also lacks and does not seem fulfilling at the end after Najeeb has been rescued. The visuals and music score are good. Overall, 2.5/5 for me. Yess I agree maybe they could have shown najeeb 's closeness with the animals more, but I think there was a beautiful scene in the 2nd half where you see the Sheiks were having a wedding dawat in which they are eating mutton and one of the Sheik gives one piece to najeeb he takes from him but never eats, even though he could have eaten as he is eating bread daily he could have easily gone for that mutton piece...cut to when we see a scene in a first half where his mom is cooking and he was so curious to eat mutton biryani... This small detailing from wanting to eat mutton in Kerala and then not eating that mutton piece at Sheikh's wedding dawat speaks volume about the value of life, that how empty he is , what that goats meant to him,how all this have changed him....but yess it could have been done with some more scenes in the movie....still I loved the movie, the making and overall... Highly recommended 💯💯

There's a director's cut for the movie spanning 3hr 30mins or so.. Which will be released later. There has been many sections shot to show the emotions between hom and animals which were chopped off due to censor board flags. For eg: the best scene where Najeeb cuts down the male organ of a newly born goat and his emotions where shot but never made it to the movie. Also, there were scenes on how he talks to his goats and drinks their milk when being hungry are all not shown. There's a lot more left outside than what we have seen in screen. I felt director's interpretation as a survival movie has really worked among audience. We could've said that he didn't show who those arabs are or african is and their background. Or Najeebs emotional journey is missing. As we speak there's very little we can fit in within 3hrs.. This is a good review but often derailed as the reviewer is trying to push his ideas and fails to review the movie as such.. From a movie making and review point of view, how good ia the movie, screenplay, direction, art, costume.. Nothing has been mentioned. I think reviewer wanted to give a negative review for publicity considering the huge success by pushing ideas. Not a bad try though, great thoughts are shared but maybe for another movie or an extended version. If you just look at what has been conceived and released to audience, The Goat Life is nothing less than Stupendous or Fantastic.

    • @febinfrancis1749
      @febinfrancis1749 Před 5 měsíci +7

See there could be atleast 25 different movies made on the same story. For eg: a writers perspective movie, wife's struggle n thoughts as another movie, najeebs internal thoughts n emotions movie, mother's thoughts, an actor enacting najeeb n his hardships n how he concieves it, thoughts of the animals, hakkims view,.. etc..
Out of this Blessy took the survival and external struggle to visualize, it's his wisdom and choice. Meanwhile if reviewer want the story to be told in a different way, it's his choice.
I think as a reviewer you should be speaking about what has been done and not what could've been done.. yes they can suggest on corrections like costume continuity was missing, he looked way lean in one scene and felt bigger in the subsequent like that..
To me this looked like, he trying to get attention by pushing negative review.. nothing else..
      Not a good review!

Reviewers need to speak for themselves; they can’t say “we” stay disconnected or “we” don’t feel for the protagonist, etc. Not connecting to the characters or the story is a result of the sensibilities one has while watching a movie. When a reviewer uses a blanket term like “we,” it’s assumed that the audience shares the same sensibilities. I did not read the book, but I was entirely invested and bought into the emotions. The plausibility of situations in the screenplay matters to me; hence, storytelling choices do not alter my viewing experience significantly. However, I cannot expect everyone to have the same sensibility.

  • @jenuonline
    @jenuonline Před 5 měsíci +1

The review critiques the film's lack of internal exploration compared to the book. However, this could be a deliberate choice by director Blessy. By prioritizing the harsh external realities - the unforgiving desert, the physical toll, the isolation - the film might be mirroring Najeeb's internal breakdown without resorting to direct exposition. The minimal dialogue and focus on survival struggles could be a way to build empathy for Najeeb's plight. We connect with his suffering by experiencing it alongside him, rather than having his emotions dictated by heavy-handed dialogue or music. Additionally, the review criticizes the film's universality, arguing Najeeb's situation could be anywhere. This, however, could be a strength. By stripping away specifics, the film allows the story to resonate with anyone who has faced extreme hardship or isolation, making Najeeb's struggle more relatable on a human level. Ultimately, the effectiveness of Aadujeevitham depends on your cinematic preferences. If you crave deep introspection and character dissection, you might be disappointed. But if you appreciate a powerful visual experience that explores themes of survival and resilience through a character's physical and emotional journey, Aadujeevitham could be a rewarding watch.

In his life in Kerala he's shown as this strapping confident young man but as soon as he is in Saudi he becomes this timid man who only knows to moan. Its always appreciated when you stick to the original story but where is the redemption? Even during the survival scenes Najeeb comes off as a weak bickering character.

As this reviewer mentioned, I also could not be able to feel the emotional bond between Najeeb & the Goat. This is probably because there were No anchor point among goats to which audience can connect - for example Wilson in Cast Away. There was a goat which sort of stand with Najeeb but makers didn't explore that angle in the later part. They should have shown emotional moments of Najeeb interactions with Goats during his shepherding days and how the goats make him move on with every day. There are less of goats in this Goat Life.

Very disappointing to say that many expect the adaptation of the novel to be like including scenes they like and are emotional. If it was for that, as the technicians rightly said, it will be a 10 hour long feature film. As a cinematic experience, it is top notch in every department. So my question is, what do you except when you see a film? Is it just how the adaptation works (in this case) or the cinematic experience?
Sad that the amount of over criticism or for this case, the adaptation issue, Indian cinema is being dragged back from going to the international audience. Good films are being criticised for silly reasons. In short, we are digging our own grave.

Finally the much awaited BR review is out after the mandatory 1st weekend moratorium clause BR has signed with many filmmakers. Now that being said, I agree with some points that he makes however disagree on the emotional connect and the use of the word 'generic' to describe this film, because it is anything but. So great was the emotional impact and gut wrenching scenes unfolding on screen, I had difficulty sleeping well that night after watching the movie. I actually felt dehyrdated during the night as the desert scenes took over my subconscious.
I also dont understand what BR means by the suffering is only external. If the director had chosen to showcase internal suffering only, we would end up with scene after scene of Najeebs character weeping. The whole point of the jaw dropping external transformation was for the audience to fill in the gap as to what turmoil the man has gone through over the years. This is a acting feat like no other. We are privileged to have witnessed this magnificence in our lifetime.

And yes Blessy movies typically lean into melodrama that hits the audience deeper. Considering these facts of the novel, the movie couldve been better at many places.
But despite all these shortcomings, if you can discount these limitations against the novel, its a well made movie by any standards. Let's give the credit where it's due - to the Aadujeevitam team for their efforts and artistry. I agree and disagree.. mollywood films have shown they can be a very intimate exprreince .
But with goat life as the way it is now, where slight compromise is made to make it more cinematic, still people complain there is slight lag and the film is slightly artsy.
So if you go more into the classic / artsy route by dwelving deeper into the pysche of the characters, its not a problem for a mollywoid audience but for a 82cr budget its a big issue.
82cr is a big budget movie usually reserved for commercial cinemas in mollywood. Bramsyugam was made for 27cr..so they could take risk going all artsy and manage to recover the cost by banking on the niche auduence. For mollywoid, with a 82 cr budget you cant do that but still blessy managed to keep it classy . Becos nor baddy or any of those so called amateur vloggers sitting on the high table in ther bedroom making comments in the comment section can do squat if the films takes a bad hit.

What do u mean the relationship between animas have not been established..his very first interaction with the goats..when he has to milk them ..how a certain goat understood his plight and allowed itself to be milked as it actually empathised with Najeeb…I suggest u watch the movie once again sir…

This is Najeeb's story and its the life that he saw and it is also shown from his perspective. So saying that the other characters were mere chalklines lose significance as the story wasnt about them. For example, the perpetrator arab could have had a family in the city whom he cared for very dearly but that is of no importance to Najeeb's story.

I have a similar opinion. The movie didn’t work for me as well. A few scenes in the movie worked really for me and touched the heart. Also, didn’t leave any post movie effects too. Definitely, hats off to the acting and efforts behind making this movie.

This film is 3 hrs long & people are already complaining that its too long. If Blessy had made the film the way you wanted it, it would have tanked already. Blessy's films are not melodramatic, if you had seen any of his work, you would know already. This is by far, the most distinct of all his work because he has used visual stortelling to convey all that needs to be told. Mere visuals alone are enough to convey all those emotions you've mentioned & they had to cut the runtime from 3 hr 45 mins to 3hrs to make it more palettable for a mainstream audience

It doesn't matter if or not you have read the book. Why should we empathise with the protagonist - Najeeb in this case. At best I feel he is being wronged by his Kafeel. But his misery could have been better captured if we connected with Najeeb as the person. Lets say In Thanmathra, son's success is shown through the eyes of Mohanlal, his struggles. We could relate to a father like that. The good of Najeeb could have been shown to get us connected to the character. A more apt title in the way the movie is shown could be' the great desert crossing' !

I've read the novel and I was left completely in awe of the writing and the fact that this is based on a real life story.
The movie works well for sure. It left me gasping about the plight of Najeeb and Hakkiim multiple times even after being aware of what is going to happen next.
Technically the movie ticks all the boxes.
I thought the movie works even better if you haven't read the novel.
On a making side they could've used his attachment towards the animals a lot more which in turn would have enriched the first half.
The song periyone got delayed towards the climax I thought. Also would have loved to see a special mention of Real life Najeeb at the end.
When it comes to the qn of doing complete justice to the book, they have succeeded partially. Could've done a bit more, but can't be too critical because they're visualising a 43 chapter book into a 3-hr film.
Overall it is very much an above average movie,, which could've received a classic status if not for some of those missed opportunities
For me Blessy's Thanmatra still ranks higher than this one overall as a movie.
    Anyway the efforts are commendable.
During these times when many avg films are receiving over hype and amazing theatrical run, this movie thoroughly deserves all the praise that it is getting right now .
And Prithviraj has just delivered his career best performance for sure

Irrespective of the fact that it is inspired from a real events, the novel presented them on another level. The essense of this story lies in THAT angle of looking at these events at which the novel did and what the filmmakers decided to not put in the 3 hours of runtime. One actual reason I think why many who have actually experienced the original novel and it's psychological ride didn't connect with the film is because it became less about Najeeb's fateful life with the goats in an alien world full of new stories, than it is about his external suffering and challenges in his survival and escape. But indeed it is difficult to filter and constrict a novel into a commercial movie considering the time constraints, the narrative could have been better crafted with, say better choices of beats from the novel and giving more thought into layering an angle of introspection to his eventful story. Rest technical effects in terms of executing such a project was clearly reflected!

I thought Blessy has repackaged the novel brilliantly by focussing on the nature (sounds, lights, sand, wind) that captures the essence of time and space. On the other hand, the novel intricately captures the emotions and relationships between Najeeb and the goats. The focus of the movie was on the deeper philosophy that shows the movement between abundance and nothingness. Regading connectedness with audience, I dont think an intellectual critique or some urban educated ‘elite’ (like yours truly ) can make a judgement. The movie is already a huge money spinner and that's not possible but for the large masses. My opinion,Blessy has mashed the opportunity and missed none!

I have not read the book so there is no way for me to compare. I thought this was an incredible film. But I do understand the perspective because whenever I watch a film based on a novel that I read I always end up feeling a tad bit less emotionally connected to it . That’s cz novel’s will always generate a bigger and better emotional connect with the reader. The film adaption can never compete with novel’s richness

I am a unbiased mallu and I completely agree with this review. I watched it with my wife on the first day. There wasnt a single scene from the movie that made me or my wife teary or emotional (its unusal). I agee, there is an extreme level of dedication and hardwork gone in the process of making this film. But, for me its just a good film which would stay slightly above average. I dont know about oscars and stuff. I would'nt call it a 'masterclass'. For me, this movie fails to connect emotionally, despite all the 'hooha' around it at the moment.
