If nothing else, you make it clear why those awnings cost as much as they do. That was an impressive build.
That's very, very good. Problem with us DIY'ers is you can't really afford to incrementally improve a design by making it two or five times, so starting off with a known working design is so useful. Thank you.
The sewing...the sewing machine, the techniques...perhaps you can do a video on that? (Or is that the next Video?)
also consider vinyl, even used billboards, their is a special glue/solvent for it that makes incredibly strong connections. Easier and stronger than sewing.
"Chalk-Aided Design", you ARE one of those funny youtubers. Good job buddy!
😂😂 I'm trying! Thanks man
A proper comedian lowers your expectations before hand
@@richeyrich2203shhhh don’t tell all the tricks
A very good smart statement about removing the galvanized coating before welding, the reason why I had a welding shop teacher who had to have his stomach replaced the actual stomach and they replaced it with a goat stomach because he had welded for 30 years on galvanized metal without a respirator or an oxygen mask and the fumes from the galvanization will destroy your stomach lining so please for the love of God be careful Tell your followers if they're going to follow your design make sure to get that galvanized coating off first.
I laughed way too hard at that 😂
Your obsession with these (and other accessories) is truly appreciated, as is the effort you put into documenting them and putting them up as open source. I’m going to have to get me a welder one of these days!
The Harbor Freight easy flux 125 is wicked, pretty cheap
The little stand off posts: Sew a circle of thin leather onto the awning where it touches, and on rub areas on the corners to prevent wear through. (boat bimini trick) Wind will wear through if it's used lots otherwise. Crutch/cane feet or folding chair feet are possible alternative sources for feet. Leather: I keep leather from leather furniture/purses etc being scrapped to use for little projects like this. It can be 'saddle stitched' (search term) by hand if you don't have a heavy duty sewing machine.
Great build! Thanks for the video!
Thanks for the feedback! Yeah, I thought about adding a double layer of fabric where those posts are. I also have bits of grey vinyl I could use there.
Don't sew them, just use Barge cement. @@PatrickRemington
Hands down you have the best "Click Bait" I have ever seen
I am proud of you....
Your Title is:
BEST DIY Awning ... *Do Not Attempt
of course I have to "CLICK" on this video to see WHY I should not do it...
Bravo Darling... Bravo
😂😂😂
Haha, I WASN’T going to click on it, even though I’m a subscriber 😂

HAHAHA...
Procrastinating paid off big time for me. I was going to copy your last awning build but haven't had time to do it. Glad I waited because now I want this one instead lol.
😂😂 Nice!
A CZcams video that actually lives up to it's title. Awesome job on the awning!!!
I personally know the owner of Kinsman hardware and I can assure you the price he charges is not so he can get rich, in fact, he has to work full-time at another job to keep the awning business viable. It is super expensive to build these in the United States especially at the level of quality he does it at. I can promise if he was able to build and sell these cheaper at the same level of quality he would do so in a heart beat. He is a really awesome person and in it for the passion, not the profit.
No doubt an awesome product. Would love to meet him. Hopefully my video will give him some more exposure!
I love that you added in the metric measurements! I don't even use metric but I hate when I see people use metric but don't add standard and I'm sure people who use metric feel the same way on the other side.
metric is the standard :p
In the middle of building an offroad bicycle camper and this gives me some ideas. I am thinking something very similar, only using carbon fiber tube and pvc plastic board (I often just use cheap plastic cutting boards) in place of conduit and metal plate / sheet to save weight. It also only needs to be about 1/2 to 3/4 the size...9x9 I am thinking.
Hey Patrick! This is a perfect timing for me! I just bought a tent to do my version of your rooftop tent! I'm going to figure out how to incorporate an awning into it. Thanks for the upload!!
Wow! Great job -- Thanks for making this and sharing it with us.
Yeah, you need the tools and equipment, by it definitely saves a lot of money -- and is custom made!
I'm about to build the ladder for my 4runner. I watched your video like 10 times and went to see if you had any new vids up and hell yeah this is awesome, thanks for the inspiration!
Thank you!! You are welcome! Glad to help! 🙏🙏
Great job mate. I love that you can take an idea and create a diy version. It's a lot lighter than the one I built for my trailer.
Thank you Thank you!!
This is one of the best diy tutorials I’ve seen. Also those ‘markings’ made me feel something
Good stuff. Will definitely be referring to this when the time comes for me to build my awning. Definitely interested in seeing a video about the fabric and building the cover.
Awesome build. Also, I caught the bucket in the background... Hail State!
I’m blown away that you don’t have 10x more subscribers. Can’t wait for the next video.
Thanks man!
Ripstop by the roll sells outdoor, performance fabric target to DIYers. They sell long - length zippers. I ordered one that goes around the entire perimeter of my 11 foot hammock. I think about 25 feet. A long zipper like that and some extra remnant fabric, and you have a bag.
I will be copying this build when I make my own awning. I like your first version, but I wanted one that was freestanding. V2 looks perfect. I was curious to see how the conduit held up during welding.
love this design, thank you for sharing. I have that same machine and if it get a little too much dust, lint, etc inside from sewing it jams, feeds weird and fights you. So hopefully the issue was it needed to be cleaned..
Love your videos your clamshell roof top tent inspired me years ago and i built one myself. It's the project i built that i an most proud of
This is a fantastic build!! That little leak can be fixed with DIY seam sealer. You may even be able to come up with some kind of flap to cover up the hole around the joint (where water "leaks" onto your rear window)...
Thank you! 🙏Got seam sealer on the way! Yeah, I was thinking it needed a flap of some sort maybe with magnets
I agree it is fantastic! A flap to cover the hole would be complicated, since it would have to be big enough to keep water off the near side of the roof. Otherwise water will land on the roof and run down that same window, which is hardly any different from hitting it directly. In pouring rain it will probably be hardly noticeable, since the roof will be draining there as well.
Would using bolts with a rounded head like a carriage bolt minimize or eliminate the fabric catching at the hinge?
Bro!!! I’ve been here since before your first model. I’m so glad your upgrading, this is so dope!
Thanks man!!
Great video. This is all I can think about now, I have begun pricing it out and will begin here any day. Thank you
Great, great work!
Im looking to do this sort of project for a pickup truck. Place a ladder rack for attachment points. Thank you for the thought starters...
Congratulations: this is THE FIRST 20+ min video i watched from beginning to end. Super tempted to make something like this for my crappy little honda civic lol
EXCELENTE !! Gracias por tu tiempo. Por una explicación prolija y dedicada. Desde Argentina gracias por tu tiempo. Juan Carlos
Amazing work, man. Keep it up!
Thank you!
Great Work! Thanks for putting this vid together and for the inspiration.
Thank you!
Brilliant work mate. The effort to produce these projects and especially video them is impressive. I swear 24/7 on my projects, don’t know how you manage to stay so upbeat 😅👍
Thank you so much! Yeah I have to edit that part out for CZcams but trust me I'm right there with you! 😂😂
@@PatrickRemington 😂👍
Great awning, I watched your first awning build and started building myself one. I ended up with my awning costing less than $100.°° delivered by end of the week I ordered it. I think it was due to tracking cookies from "Google" search and U-tube for my building awning parts. I was starting to order fabric for awning, when I got the offer E-marketing email. So now I guess I should move on to a 270 awning with all the aluminum I now have. 🤔 My Scamp T.T. could use a low cost but high quality awning.
Thanks again for all your hard work and time on your projects and editing of videos then sharing it. Your projects (and others) are effecting the market over-pricing camping gear out of reach for budgets.
What a clever man you are! Fantastic build 👌🏻👏🏻
I’m impressed! Good job man.👍
This is awesome. Looks great and seems strong.
Great job looks amazing 😊
Great job mate,cool build!
This is fantastic. Adding this to my to-do list for July/August
Do it!
@@PatrickRemington is it the same bracket that you had for offer the last time? I bought that design, but haven't built it yet. If not are you going to offer it for sale again?
Damn.... now I have to build anothe one of your creations! Salute from Brazil!
I think I might even be able to do this one. Thanks!👍
Thank you for the great build I definitely want to build one myself
Very nice and informative, I guess I’ll just buy one.
Add this to my list of projects to build!
sharing the measurement in mm was key men ! you did what the others doesn't do! awesome! thank you
Did it for you, man! 🤙🤙
love it man .. thanks for sharing ~!
Looks great
Great Build. Second time I stumbled on your channel. I will subscribe now.
absolutely brilliant 🤩🤩
It's amazing the stuff you come up with!
Thank you!
Great build!
Very good job 👍.
Bisous de France.
This is freaking Awesome! Great Job!
Thank you! 🙏🙏
This was awesome 👏
would love to see how this holds up in areas that are prone to more wind
😉👍 I really like it! I might have to try and build me one... Thanks for sharing all the measurements, issues, trials, and headaches of fabricating, I know that's the hard part. So it'll make it a lot simpler for me to try to build one sometime by far. I might try to build your diy roof top tent as well. I've got a Chevy Avalanche, and I think I'll build a custom backrack with those both on top. I'm already planning on building myself a custom cargo basket for the roof. Thank you for showing in detail how to weld those washers onto the pipe as well... I'm working on another project... probably today, that I'm plan on doing the same thing. You probably just saved me a lot of headaches and bad welds. I also got a weld a nut inside of a pipe, so that will be fun, lol... 🙄
Thank you this awesome step by step video. And for the measurements in millimeters 😊
You are welcome!
I built your last awning and loving it
Thank you
Glad to hear it!!
One vid and I’m already hooked
Agreed 👍🏽
Love it. Been waiting to make mine for a while and this gives me the push to get it done! I had planned on making OverlandUnderBudget's awning but going to go this way now. I do love me some EMT
You can add some "seam tape" or "seam glue" to fix your seam leaking. Easy
Thank you! Me too! I've used it in a bunch of my projects
Excellent work and commitment! I’m considering making something without the frame, only a 270 tarp with 3 body attachment points and the outer fabric corners supported on telescopic poles and held with guy ropes to tension.
Be sure to watch my other 270 awning build if you haven't already
Awesome build. I'd love to replicate it as soon as I can. 👍
Amazing build! Very well done and I really appreciate the in-depth video.
I'll definitely be making one of these after I build my teardrop camper.
I think I'll try to add an additional flap of material over the bracket so it doesn't leak as much there. I also wonder if the arms could have been more of a triangular design (widest at the bracket) instead of rectangular to help prevent the arms from sagging a bit more and also help with water shed.
Enjoyed your creative ideas and diys. Cool 😎
Thank you!🙏
awesome invention
i love your effort
Very slick.
This is such a good design
Thank you!
Now you need a small cable drive and a button... easy release for when it's raining... ;) Nice build!
That's badass my guy. Worthy of a sub and like. 👍
Fair play. Well impressed. 👍
Thank you!
Omg. I want that for my backyard sliding door
Just watching your video now.
As I said before you are a great inspiration and builder.
You did a amazing job and I will definitely be looking forward to building this for my truck when I get the roof rack figured out.
You did amazing work.
Thanks for sharing
One suggestion for the seam were was leaking little bit.
Beeswax
Thank you for saying that! I really appreciate it. It’s comments like this that fuel me to keep sharing my work. 🍻
Thats pretty good!
Very cool
Wow! Nice make. Always wished I had taken a welding class!
Hey I learned right here on CZcams. Never too late
Awesome video and build! Love the detail and your use of CAD. It takes a bit of extra time but you can leave any zinc plated metal in a bin/glass/tub/bucket of white vinegar for (time varies between a day to days based on plating thickness) to strip the zinc off so you don't have to worry about zinc fume sickness. The sanding works on exposed surfaces but your still getting fumes from the plating on the areas you can not sand.
Thanks for the tip! Yeah i make sure I can’t smell any fumes, whether it’s coated or not. I usually have a fan, pulling the fumes away from me.
Brilliant mate.
Thank you!
What a fantastic job!
Thank you!
Smart young man. Now for you to build mine!😎❤️💥
cool build-you did an awesome job
Thank you!! You might enjoy some of my other videos if you like this one
awesome! love it. built the first awning to your specs 2 yrs ago and want to do a 270 like this. Always wondering how to take weight off altough it's not too bad at 42pound. i was wondering if the mounting needs the full stretch along the side of the vehicle or if it could be in two parts, the bracket holding the arms and one to just rest the ends for travelling?
I have bought the Singer HD 6 months ago as I found the Brother FS20 to give up as the layers of fabric increase. altough I find it surprisingly strong I also fight with tension of lower thread a lot. only started sewing myself with the awning project 2 yrs ago and have no idea about general settings of the machine. what i figured is that sewing self adhesive stuff like velcro is a mess, the glue messes up both needle and thread while some velcro without glue can be challenging. let me know once u figure the issue!
Fucking wild... I just watched your 270 degree awning video last night. First time I came across your channel. Now just a few hours later you posted a new one. How random is that 😂
same shit happened to me. went to rewatch his ladder video as I'm about to build one then checked to see if he had any new vids and there was this one 😂
Nice! Yeah that other video is popping off again for some reason. I’m getting tons of comments on it lately. I figured it was a good time to get this one out. 🍻
@@PatrickRemington Perfect timing indeed 👌🏼
Badass man. Looks good!
Thank you! Thanks for watching
This is great! I've been modeling up a simliar build. I just moved and am waiting for my tools to get here! Can't wait to get started on some more fun projects. How does the awning do with the tailgate open? I'd REALLY like to get a 270 functional with a tailgate that can go up/down easily. I was considering doing a dual position/lock mechanism where the first 180 locks and the last 90 lock seperately but not sure its a real issue yet.
You should patent this idea man. Looks so good and I really wanna try and get one of my own now. :) Happy Driving!
I wish but It’s modeled after the kinsman awning by kinsman hardware
Very cool. I have mixed mineral spirits with silicone and rolled that on to similar fabric to water proof it. Worked great.
Thanks for the tip! How much of each do you mix?
I did a similar thing years ago with a light weight tarp I made out of silNylon. I used a 50/50 mix. Was quite thick still, but brushed on just fine.
Could probably get away with more mineral spirits to thin the silicone a bit more.
Super slick, after you painted it, it looked big box manufactured
Thank you! That's the goal with all my builds!
Hi Patrick, I've been enjoying your video's . As a member of one of South Africa's biggest churches ,these awnings would make our lives very easy considerin the temperature of Limpopo province. However as usual prices might be a serious obstacle due to the exchange rate between the dollar and the rand.❤❤❤
Great work mate 👍
What a cool channel, thanks for your effort 👌 💪 I like it alot!
Awesome build. I made an awning for my 3rd gen but not a 270 like you did. I don't think you need the full 3/4 square tubing frame, seems like you can reduce the weight a little but might not be the worth the weight savings.
Clean job.,
Thank you!
Thanks!
That’s impressive 👏
Thank you! 🙏
Nice job man new SUB here! Love the channel great ideas you got!
Thanks man!
One of the best features of this compared to all of them on the market is having an actual squared off back. Where you really want it above your tailgate.
Awesome
Amazing bro
Thank you! 🙏
Não conhecia seu canal. Você me lembrou Agustín Niemela. Good job from Brasil.
Great build I was thinking of an awning idea for my rv trailer ,your video helped as far as leaks in the sewed seem in kite making they use this seem tape similar to two face tape for strengthening the seams, I wonder if that would work ,thanks for the vid
Yeah I have seen that! I ended up using losso seam sealer. It works very well
