A person sees a snake that goes: "Hiss, hiss, [tail shake, tail shake], [rattle, rattle, rattle] -- yeah, I'm a dangerous rattlesnake; you'd better run!"
Person looks closer: "Oh, that's a lot of bull, snake!"
-- Is that how they got their name?
I grew up in southern Alberta with the pleasure of being around both rattlesnakes and bullsnakes. In the wild area behind my house there was a rattlesnake hibernaculum that my mom protected diligently against the roving teens that tended to pour boiling water or gasoline down the hole.
But we also had a resident bullsnake that stuck around for a couple years. It lived under our front steps and came out in the morning to sun itself on our pavement. Me and my brother loved it and named it Sammy (gender neutral name cause we werent sure if it was a boy or a girl). Never handled it or anything, but we loved watching it.
The mail carriers weren't the most pleased finding a 6 foot snake blocking his path to delivering our mail though! 😂
Haha, oh dear. I'm also in Alberta. I've seen more garter snakes than bull snakes or rattle snakes though.
@@AutumnFalls89 I grew up in Medicine Hat. We were always told to watch out for bullsnakes falling from trees because they like to climb, but can be a little clumsy sometimes haha.
I've seen a lot of garters too.
@@Elvishswimmer I never heard that when I was in and around Lethbridge for a couple years. I knew to watch out for them while walking in the coolies, but I never heard of them falling from trees!
Pinecone would be fun! That's what her pattern reminds me of
I agree I think pinecone is a great name
Tora (variant of Thora, and also feminine of “toro”) or Tyra (“tyr” means “bull”)
♥️“Valentine”♥️
I love the way she ending the video by being so relaxed in your hand😍
I like the name Isadora, because she is-adora-bull
Name suggestion: Minnietaur
I second Minnie!
Name idea: Fernanda, feminine version of Ferdinand (the peaceful bull).
I like "Fernanda", maybe Fern for short as she has the gracefulness of a fern swaying in the breeze.
OMG, childhood memory being dredged up. I had a little stuffed bull I named Ferdinand when I was a kid. This is a wonderful channel.
Was just going to say the same!
Bullseye! I read the title wrong at first, and then I immediately thought "that'd be a good name though"
I absolutely ADORE snakes! They're one of my favorite animals, and they're so plain awesome. 🐍
So cute ugh
Mavis or Maeve, after the legendary bull-kidnapping irish queen Meabh.
Callie. She’s from CA. She’s cute. And she’s so clever!
You could name her Ferdinand. After the bull from the awesome children’s book 🐍
Y’all, I just learned that “Sonic the Hedgehog,” the new movie based on the 1990s video game that comes out this weekend, takes place In MONTANA!!!! Perfect excuse to update us on your hedgie (hedgies? How many have you got now?) and snag some subscribers! Best!
Welcome, Little Bullsnake!
It's so important to educate people about snakes, especially non-venomous ones. They're so beneficial!
My youngest daughter and I can't get enough watching your videos. We are learning so much, plus the love you have for these animals shine. Keep it up and thank you.
With those beautiful scales, I think Checkers would make a good name.
Name her Noodle!
She looks like a Flossie to me. It just seems like a nice name and follows along with the rope, noodle, string, hose, tube, etc. theme people use for snakes.
Name Ideas:
-Mimi (Short for Mimick)
-Lucida
-Lamb
-Sandra
She is so gorgeous! Thank you for sharing her with us.
She's beautiful. What a great addition to your menagerie 🥰
I live in Rattlesnake country but I do not have any snakes but I do love all animals. Thanks for the info regarding bull snakes and rattlers. I am sure the patreon's will give this sweet snake a great name. Thanks Jessi:)
Name suggestion - Diamond, given the similarity of her pattern.
I used to have a garter snake I called slither. She loved fish, so I stocked her water bowl with feeder fish. I tried feeding her a cricket once, but had to take it out because slither didn't want to eat it, and the cricked started eating the snake. We would spend afternoons hanging out in the afternoon sunlight with her on my belly. I had to take her back to the pet store because I had to move, and the place I was moving to did not allow snakes. I hope she got adopted by a good caretaker. At the pet store, when they took slither out of the container, their comment was "Oh look, she's not even afraid!" I guess I was doing something right, because she had not been handled much before I got her.
Where I grew up, we had a lot of garter snakes and milk snakes. Milk snakes look like rattle snakes in their markings, but are harmless. There was one time my mom met me at the door to the house, and asked me to take the snake next to my brother's crib outside. I looked at the snake, looked at my mom and said "Okay." Picked up the snake and released it in our garden. I did not find out until years later that she thought I had put the snake there. I told her, no I had not put the snake there, it crawled up from the basement. She told me if she had known that, she would never have asked me to remove it (dead snake if she had known). Milk snakes are generally calm as long as you don't stress them out and can be handled easily if you are gentle with them. Do make sure of your identification, milk snakes look a lot like rattle snakes, but without the fat head and no rattles. If they are in dead leaves, the will vibrate their tail in the leaves to mimic the sound of a rattle snake to try and scare you away.
My name suggestion: B'Elanna, named for the chief engineer of the USS Voyager: B'Elanna Torres, because she had a feisty attitude too.
That spatula technique is freaking genius
I have a southern pine, I couldn't find a bullsnake here in the uk, they are unfortunately not very popular :( but my pine snake is incredible. I love her so much
She's a beauty. I have a certain...affinity for snakes. :)
To second a couple of comments, I really like Maeve or Wadjet. I love mythological names.
In Greek, Ophio means serpent... Ophelia means serpentine... how about Ophelia?
They already have an Ophelia. She's an opossum. :)
Good, but it would be confusing to have two Ophelias of VERY different species
_Taurus_ or _Taura_ from the Latin for bull, _Tavros_ (pronounced Tav-rhos) from the Greek for bull, _Boli_ which is the old Norse word we get the word Bull from or perhaps _Tarw_ (pronounced Tar-oo) which is Welsh for bull :)
My husband always jokes that, if I get a pet snake (I used to have tarantulas), he would name it "Ababambalela", which is kind of Swiss German for "letting hang down". ;-)
The two dislikes on this video are rattlesnakes who couldn't move into the neighborhood because of a bullsnake.
I live in Southern Ontario, Canada and I've noticed Stouts in my yard and I'm very happy to have them for neighbors, not just because they are adorable but also because they prey on mice (keeps them out of my house) and frogs (keeps them out of my pool). It's good to understand your wildlife neighbors so you know which ones to respect and leave alone and which ones you actually need to get evicted.
Brahma, as in the Brahma bull 😁
Someone else mentioned Emily from Snake Discovery for more information about Bullsnakes. But I also like how they go about naming their snakes they give them names like Janet, Brad, Peanut and Doug because her thought is that a snake with a normal name seems less scary to people who might not be a fan of snakes.
Snakes are awesome (and a bit mysterious!) I've learned a lot from your videos! Thanks
Feen - the german word for fairy and in Northern mythology the personification of gracefulness
My vote, as well as my daughter's are "Ferdinand" from the children's book.
My son votes for "Bill Gates"
Name suggestions:
Slythering
Hufflepuff
Nagini ( Voldemorts snake )
Parceltongue
(All from Harry Potter's Hogwarts School)
Happy 💗 Day to all our Animal Wonders babies!
She’s just a baby! Awww
oooooh shes so lovely. those glossy scales and so energetic.
Here in Arizona, they like to shake the mesquite beans drying in the trees. Scares you that there's a rattlesnake over you in the tree. lol
I just got a 5' bull snake from the wild in tonopah az it's awesome
Great video! I keep and breed bullsnakes and some other pituophis species. To me the one you have there looks like a gopher snake, maybe a San Diego gopher snake (which could explain her California origins) or Great Basin due to her patterning and her head looking more like a true gopher snake than a bull. But bullsnakes are technically a subspecies of gophersnakes, so it isn't really wrong either way. She's beautiful!
Wadjet! She is the snake goddess of Ancient Egypt and the fierce protector of Lower Egypt.
gotta name her Bean. Bean the bullsnake
Name idea: Cleopatra
I know bullsnakes don´t live in Egypt but I think it would fit as she´s soo beautiful
Eight feet!!! 😳 All things really do start small!!
You bet they get huge, I personally ran in to one on my farm that had to be at least 8ft. Had to been about 14 or around there. Freaked me out big time! I first thought it was a rattler! Treated it like one and used a long stick to put it in a barrel. (I know, stupid. but we had chickens and i wasint gona let it hurt any) Then one of the farm hands id it. So releaved. And thats how I learned bull snakes exist. lol Neat snakes. I wanted to keep that one but my folks said no. u_u For a bull snake, I remember it was actually really chill and dididnt even strike once.
You keep calling her this beauty, how about Beauty or Belle?
I love this! I vote for Beauty!
Tickles is a great name .
The "Snakes in mythology" Wikipedia page mentions a Rainbow Snake in the myths of Africa and Australia, so I'm suggesting "Rainbow" for her name.
I miss seeing bull snakes in Oklahoma. Besides bull snakes, king snakes also are great at keeping rattle snakes away.
no one ever disliked this. Whew!
She looks like a Jasper. What a cutie!
Very cool snake. 🐍❤👍
I like the name piper..she looks like a piper
I vote on Outhouse (cause my family found a giant bullsnake in my aunt's outhouse many years ago).
I love her wow
Please help, our cockatiel is losing her tail feathers, less than half are left. What should we do?
I would've call her Wonder, just because I think it suits her. :)
Name idea: Aster... She was the inspiration for friendship day and the first nerd-fighter. (I think it would honor her)
I think Torus. It has a similar sound to Taurus, the bull zodiac sign, but it's the curved shape, like a donut, and that bull snake clearly likes to curve around your hand.
She's such a cutie~!
I feel like a good name for her would be Fluffy, but that's because I like giving animals odd names (had a hamster named cat, and in a game of stardew I have a chicken named Goat). Also, Maria or Marie popped into my head, and the geek part of me says Dona Noble would fit.
*The best people in the world........tend to be those who are kind toward animals*
Not relevant to the video but, I love your shirt!
I think she looks like a Spots
I think she should be named Hathor after the Egyptian goddess of cows. Or maybe Hera, as the cow is Hera’s sacred animal.
I have a name suggestion, Taura (like taurus because it is a bullsnake, and taurus is is bull, and it sort of sounds like a girls name?)
My suggestion for a name is Torrance. If you're a fan of Bring it On, then you'll get the reference. ;)
I vote for Belle if she's a girl, and Ferdinand if he's a boy!
By the way, you definitely should make a collab with Snake Discovery! I believe Emily and Ed live on Winsconsin/Montana.. It'd be awesome😍😍😍
Pinecone - cause her pattern kind looks like one
Ariadne, she's the princess who helped defeat the Minotaur
Pasiphaë the mother of the Minotaur,
Minoa (culture that worshiped bulls)
Apis (ancient egyptian bull god)
Marble would make a cute name.. cause of her patterns.. or Cerci after the Greek goddess of serpents!
I like Billie or Gypsy as a name.
I said that name just now
I was gonna ask if bullsnakes were also called gopher snakes. I love in Sacramento and we see these guys fairly often, but have always called them gopher snakes, not bull snakes. Interesting that there's subtypes of gopher snakes, TIL! Thanks for teaching people that these cool noodles aren't danger noodles and will keep the danger noodles at bay by eating their prey.
She seems like a "Dolly" to me but I love the Isadora suggestion..
Name ideas: Spunky, Amber, Agni, Edana
Sophia would be a cute name!
Stella or Ruby are cool names
Ariadne, from the tale of Theseus and the Minotaur.
How about Artemis?
Snicker will be a good name
Pepper, Amy, Amelia, and I like Ferdinad too
I like beauty and belle too
Bulma the Bullsnake!
How about Tora?
talygirl369210
Either that or Tyra
How about Blue? I thought of it as an homage to Paul Bunyan's Blue (an ox, which is just a cow or bull used for draft). It should resonate with kids because they likely know of Blue Ivy Carter, Beyoncé & Jay-Z's daughter.
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Okay when are we going to get a Snake Discovery collab.
My kiddos like name Mossy, or Sara!
We think Sizzle is a great name!
I just have one quick question, how expensive is it to care for all the animals food and stuff (per week)?
How about Garde? Bullsnakes helps keep other snakes from their area right? Seems fitting
Eye like bullseye
Names? Clark, Fentanyl, Drysdale, merry, swindle, wisdom, second, donut, brimstone, gargle, lootcrate, chrome, torpor, shazbutt, gluestick, Paris, klaxon, rear window, tank, program, salty, cloak.
Name suggestion: Bullseye
Elle, 7
I'm from portugal so I don't have one of this, but I have a huge (like 2m long) rat snake and I swear we are friends: i don't disturbed her and i keep cats and humans from hurting her and in return she eats rats the size of my husband shoes. It's a pretty nice relationship but I already had to threaten a man whit a gun that really wanted to kill Cinza (grey in porruguese). So I would call her "amiga" because she is a friend of the house, like my little friend!!
