I often tell people that keeping a parrot is similar to having a child in that you need at least a rudimentary support system to help you care for them effectively. I always tell people to join online forums and groups dedicated to keeping parrots (including species-specific ones) so that they can always get advice and support from other parrot owners. And also to look into their local avian vet, aviculture specialists, bird behaviorists, and parrot-specific shelters to see what kind of support services they might offer (e.g. boarding, emergency medical care, assistance recovering lost or stolen birds, classes and seminars on training and enrichment, etc).

Congrats on your new Grey! Romeo is so beautiful and healthy looking! I've been living with a Grey named Smokey for the past 30 years. She's a cuddle bug and loves to be held and cradled like a baby. She's a great talker and mimic too. I'm 56 now, and am so worried about what will happen to her if anything every happens to me. I don't have anyone in my family who I trust to take proper care of her. People don't understand how much work goes into keeping a bird safe; no paint, no fumes, no cooking with no stick frying pans or self cleaning ovens, no toxic house cleaning supplies, etc.

BirdTricks (another CZcams channel) has at least one video on how to make provisions for your bird if you can no longer care for them. Apparently a lot of owners leave financial bequests for the bird's care in their will, for example. If this is something you're worried about, you might find the video worth a look. Though at 56, you'll (hopefully!) have at least another 20 years with her yet.

It is more common in birds with powder based feathers (think cockatiels and African gray). They make a very fine white dust that can irritate with asthma or stuff, people Other parrots have oil based feathers. The difference is in how they waterproof their feathers. They use different types of oil that make different types of dandruff.

While "pigeon fancier's lung" is pretty commonly known, any dry-climate bird is going to have dander. If you're keeping a bird indoors, it may be better to research wet-climate birds or invest in a high-end air purifier.

I've heard that the same can happen to beekeepers! They get stung so much relative to the average person that it's not uncommon to develop an allergy. Which is a real bummer since anyone who goes into working with bees usually loves them a lot

How's his grip when holding objects or larger bits of food or something? I know when one of the birds I was looking after didn't have the best grip strength (she's missing a toe from when she was at a previous owner's place), we introduced bits of food that weren't too big but were still big enough she'd rather hold it than eat it from her bowl or something. Within a few weeks, that seemed to help her recover at least to the point of being comfortable on fingers

He's a lucky boy to have found such a good home. One of the vets I worked for kept an AG in the practice. He loved to perch near reception and watch the other animals come in. When he was feeling naughty he would bark at a cat going by. To distract him from that sort of thing, we'd start singing Row, Row, Row Your Boat to him LOL. The clients loved him.

It really sounds like every bird you rescue had a poor diet in their previous home. How can this happen so often? Is it just that appropriate diets are expensive, or people just not knowing what do feed their birds?

Maybe he's afraid of going on your hand cause it doesn't look wide enough to him? Would giving him the option of stepping up on a perch the same diameter of your finger be an option, or is it too narrow without having a thumb there to secure his foot? Just thinking if he gets the confidence to do that, then your hand may not be as scary, or perhaps even better.

Hi animal wonders! I hope you can read this comment, as I'm in a bit of a pickle.
I've gotten so stressed and worried about ABV because we plan to start a breeding buisness next year or in a few years. And I would definitely feel guilty if I raised parrots like these. I've always thought that birds carried the disease their whole life once they get it. But I think I heard you mention in the video that 'Romeo (The African grey) was infected with the virus at some point in his life, and right now he shows no signs of PDD, so his immune response to the virus went well."
If I'm understanding correctly, he is immune to the virus? Like his immune system knows how to fight it off? I've done a bit of research on this virus and never knew this. Would this mean that it's safe to breed birds just like Romeo?
Last question, what lab do you guys use to test for ABV? The lab I was recommended doesn't seem to be good. Thanks guys! Romeo is adorable!!!

ABV and PDD aren't the same thing. ABV is a virus that is super contagious between parrots and once they have it they always have it. Some parrots have a normal immune response to the virus and are able to continue living a normal life. While other parrots have an abnormal immune response to the virus and they develop PDD. Those who get PDD don't recover, but some can live longer with supportive care. All of our parrot type birds test positive for ABV but none of them show any signs of having PDD. We have had a few birds pass away from symptoms of PDD in the past, though we were never able to get confirmation that's what it was (the lab we sent them to messed up). I don't have a lab recommendation at the moment.
