- Camping in the woods. Taking things back to basics with some primitive cooking.
This week I met up with @SamsonsLeader Jon muddy paws for an overnight camp out in a small wood surrounded by farmland. I used a bug net bivi that I'd picked up at a car boot sale, paired with my British army Gortex bivi bag. which made for an interesting night.
We thought we would have a go at clay baking, which is a primitive skill I've not tried before.
We wrapped a whole chicken in nettles, clay and then dry grass and built a fire around it to see if it would cook.

Thanks Stuart. It was a fun one!
Absolute classic. A great camp and a great night. Thanks Dan. Top stuff
Loved the camp and loved putting the video together.
Great to catch up and hang out mate. Thanks for a top night x
Absolutely brilliant video ! Between the nettles and the hay wrapping we were treated to wild camping, a successful cooking experiment, beer reviews and great comedic relief ! Thank you Dan and John. I haven’t laughed that much in a while 😂
Thank you. So glad you enjoyed it 👍
Another great video @CampLifeBushcraft Galfridus ! Chicken looked dreadful when it came out but once you cut into it 👍 cheers buddy 👍
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it. Yeah, it was a bit pale, but really tasty.
Great video Dan, food looked good too. Another cracking night in the wood bud, Big thumbs Up,
Regards
Moose
Thanks Martin. It was a really fun one. 👍👍
Great camp, good time and culinary classic.. Good pairing Dan, you and Jon👍 Mosquito net worked a champ I'd say, no bites. Clay chicken....delicious! Nice wooded area even if surrounded by working farm, private and secluded. Great video, well done, thanks again. See ya next time.
The anaemic rolled muddy chicken 🐔 looked edible 🫣 interesting experiment 🍄
It was lovely.. but a bit pale looking. Will try fish this way one day.
Great video and a random cooking method. Looks tastey.
Thanks mate 👍
Had me in tears 😂 funny camp
Cheers Mick. It was a fun one, really enjoyed it 👍
An interesting camp, cooking chicken in nettles, clay and straw. I wonder how many will try this?
Love your banter 😊
PS. Red wine goes with all meats 🍖
Cheers Dan that was absolutely amazing camp with Joh Muddy paws thanks Dan, enjoyed watching 😊👍
Thanks Andrew. It was a fun one.
Really appreciate you watching 👍
Cracking effort there chaps... all the food looked so good. A bit like too much work for me to ever try it though. 👍
Oh, I love those Ice Lolly beers, but i'm a sucker for anything that doesn't taste like beer.
Food was bl00dy lovely, but yes. A lot of work. Good to try it out though.
Loved that beer! So drinkable, definitely remi dedicated me of the ice cream. I'll be getting some in for the summer 😋😋
Food and drink looked amazing. Bivy looked too tight to save a few grams.
It needed using, I've had it so long. Had to try it. To be fair, once it was dark, it disappeared.
Just like a couple of kids making mud pies .. and it works .. looking good. Much more fun than when you're kids tho. Big balls comes to mind Dan. Lotsa fun guys loved Johns condom quip. Bushyboy Oz.
Hi Dan, that was pretty cool how you cooked your meal..😁👍🏻👍🏻 love your videos..😁🤗 watching from Petawawa Ontario Canada 🇨🇦😁
Hi Tamara, we were not sure how it would turn out. But it was so good! It's an old way of cooking, and as a first attempt I was very pleased.
Thank you for watching!
Dan 🙂
Superb entertainment! A lot of effort went into that dinner but it looked as though it paid off. Re sleeping mat- I am still verging on using 1 or 2 foam mats as I don't fully trust inflatable yet; you know better than I do, but I think this is the way I will keep to for now.
That was a different one mate. Scoff looked tops but the bivvy looked horrendous lol
Food was amazing. Which was a relief!
Bivi thing was OK, once it was dark I couldn't see it.
It did remind me of the thing my mum used to cover salads with in the summertime 😂
@@CampLifeBushcraft always food with you

😂😂
Looking forward to watching this tonight 👍👍⛺️⛺️👍👍
It was a fun one!
G'day Dan, Jon, great night out fellas and nice experiment muck'n about with "dinosaur poo". I have seen that method once before, though with clay alone, and in a pizza type oven, comes out similar to using a tagine. But hey, who's gonna carry that lot out in the sticks. Just goes to show what can be done out there with the natural materials at hand, excellent stuff guys !!!!!!
As a gardener, rather than a geologist, clay is simply very fine grained particles, thus retaining far more moisture than coarser sand, especially sub-surface. It does however, generally capture more vital growing elements/nutrients in doing so. I can tell you its far far easier to condition sandy soils, than clay, into ideally balanced "loam", by adding extra organic material.
So, or sow, ...... ; ) .... it's horses for courses, depending on what you want to grow, ..... or otherwise, do with it.
Btw; I have been getting on very well with the modern fruity flavoured IPAs, though cant say I've encountered a strawberry, or any other berry, job for that matter ...... yet ; )
Also, I have been known to have a robust red wine with white meat and even fish'n chips, but really .......... get a decent dry riesling or chardy in ya ; )
Cheers Duke
Epic cooking adventure. Totally hilarious. Loved the movie and music references.
Thanks. It was so much fun! Relieved the food worked out 🙂😋👌
Broke back mountain springs to mind ,and ghost thing john did I was in stitches brilliant mate thanks
Clay comes from the ground, usually in areas where streams or rivers once flowed. It is made from minerals, plant life, and animals-all the ingredients of soil. Over time, water pressure breaks up the remains of flora, fauna, and minerals, pulverising them into fine particles. For this particular spot,,,, I can confirm,,,,, it is very likely,,,,,, to be one of my "jobbies" ;)
😂😂😂
Thanks for the info!
So the rotting plant life could have been "that salad you ate" 😂👌😋
Fantastic camp evening out there Dan. Odd little bug net thing but seems to be big enough and worked well. And that food - scrumptious! Cheers mate, Warren :)
It was a fun one. Lots of laughing and great food.
The bivi thing was a novelty. But perfectly fine for a night. 👍👍
Wonderful as always my friend ! It's a Friday ..it's four o'clock ..and its Crackerjack !! innit.. well it is in my head anywaywhichowi !
I like the sound of a whole chimkin.. when I was young the birds used to rub up against me ! I was like a fox wasn't it !!
It looks like you had a wonderful time Dan bro !! ..awesome
Please give your beautiful wife a kiss from me and very best wishes as always to you !!
Great video Dan. You ate like kings! 👍
Always!
Excellent video Dan
Thanks mate 👍
Clay is just rock that's been chemically 'weathered' by carbonic acid in a process that's all sciencey. On the other hand, that shite you were using, being close to the surface, looked to have a lot of organic matter in it, some of which would undoubtedly have passed through various creatures' arses. All adds to the flavour... 😳🤣
(That heat would have killed pretty much anything untoward, I'm sure. Not that I'm in any way an expert. In anything.)
um,,,,,,,hands of black up its crack?
😂😂😂
I stayed right to the end as instructed and there was fuck all!!😡
Sounds about right 😂
that chicken is whiter that the Reform parties voter base!
