- "In 1991, I made this short film on Alfredo Rodriguez and Carlos « Patato » Valdes for the franco-german TV channel « la Sept » which is the current « Arte ». This film was produced for the show « Megamix » for which I worked regularly. At the time, I was already passionate about latin music. Being in contact with Alfredo, who was parisian by adoption for some time, I offered to cover a subject on those two musicians who knew each other quite well, since they had recorded numerous records together, and in particular « Ready for Freddy », a reference of a kind. I very much enjoyed meeting Patato in Paris, especially with Alfredo. We shooted at the parisian « New Morning » and also during other concerts outside Paris. Being well known in the french capital, Patato was constantly invited by many people and it was therefore necessary to watch him constantly. Miké Charropin, Alfredo’s wife was in charge of it, and this film is also dedicated to her.
This short film put online is a tribute to these two wonderful musicians who have unfortunately passed away today.

Thank you for this beautiful portrait of two great Cuban artists that I had the good fortune to cross paths with. First, with Patato at NY's Monday Nights at the Village Gate (Salsa), and later (1982) also briefly seating in his chair with Jorge Dalto's Interamerican Jazz Sextet at Berlin JazzFest while Patato lived in Paris. While in Paris prior to this, I briefly played bongos in Alfreditos Latin Jazz small group in Lugano, Switzerland with Daniel Maldonado on congas. Great to see them manifesting their artistry where they were truly appreciated, as NYC in those times has not been the most fertile of musical grounds.

Jajajajaja,que bueno esto por Dios!! Un Show Man,una especie de Sammy Davis Latino pero mucho mejor porque fue Natural.No tuvo que "adaptarse" como el otro a los blancos para ser aceptado. Este es pura sapiencia,swing y sabrosura!! Viva Patato!! Y esa dupla con gran Maestro Rodríguez al Piano.
@Rafa Palacios si tu no crees que El negro Cubano tuvo que adaptarse entonces que tu crees del guaguanco? Musica de negro con lenguaje de Blanco.en Los mismos conservatorios no quieren que toquen clave. Sammy Davis fue tremendo talento su Unica falla es que sempre quizo ser Frank Sinatra algo que no era necesario y tambien fue Latino por parte de su Madre.
@@Bembeleke Nunca me referí a los cubanos cuando hablo de adaptarse.Solo que por situaciones de lo que llaman "políticamente correcto o incorrecto" a muchos no les quedó de otra que "adaptarse" a lo "correcto" según los que dominan.De eso mismo derivan los cimarrones que eran rebeldes,o sea,no sé adaptaron a lo que les exigían social o políticamente.

Grande ‘Patato’ y aunque muchos salseros incluyendo los propios melómanos que tanto idolatran a E. Palmieri; que por cierto es tremendo músico; este último en una ocasión dijo ser gran admirador de Alfredo Rodríguez. Al final de cuentas nunca existió rivalidad entre músicos cubanos y boricuas, fue el mismo público salsero quien se puso en el plan absurdo ese de “quien es mejor”!!!

patato used to live with Alfredo when they came to Paris..Alfredo had an apartment at Place du Tertre in Paris, a very touristy place. Opposite the apartment was a Parisian brasserie where two Gypsy guitarists used to play .Patato very much liked having a drink and playing with them..The djembe must have belonged to the gypsies I think, they had to bring it when they knew that Patato was in Paris..But Patato did not play the djembe.,

Je suis étonné par l'année indiquée. Compte tenu de de l'année de naissance de Patato et ce qu'il déclare sur son âge dans la vidéo, ce ne serait pas plutôt vers 1999? Egalement, avait-il déjà son problème à la main droite (d'où l'usage de la mailloche) en 1991? Peut-être suis-je influencé par le fait de l'avoir plus approché à la fin des années '90 ou avoir vu la vidéo dans cette période...
Bonjour et merci pour votre intérêt pour ce film.A ma connaissance aucun film sur Patato ni Alfredo existent à part celui ci c’est pourquoi j’ai pensé qu’il était important de le faire partager..tout simplement pour se souvenir d’eux et de leur musique .
Concernant la date du tournage de ce film..J’avoue que je ne me souvenais plus avec exactitude de l’année..J’ai mis 91 sans en être sûr à 100%..Donc concernant votre question je ne savais pas quoi répondre..Et puis je me suis souvenu que j’avais tourné une séquence avec Patato ,

Donc j’avais tourné une séquence que je n’ai pas montée de Patato dans un bistro qui regardait et commentait des disques emblématiques de sa carrière.L’un d’eux est le fameux Kenny Dorham qui apparaît dans le film.Patato,qui ne savait pas écrire,à fait noter par Alfredo le texte que voiçi sur ce disque qui figure toujours dans ma discothèque:
Ceci est mon premier enregistrement jazz aux États Unis en 1954..
Ne m’oublie pas .Avec mon affection sincère.
En dessous de ce texte Patato à signé de sa main et Alfredo a rajouté la date ..
Paris le 27 Mai 1990..

Patato est né en novembre 1926,il dit dans ce film qu’il a 36 ans ...à l’envers..c’est à dire 63 ans..Il avait 63 ans et demi effectivement en 1990
