Overlanding Ladder Build - Research, Design, Bend, Welding

  • Today I’m building a overlanding ladder for my 2004 toyota 4Runner. I go through my typical process of research, design, bend & welding.
    I’ll show how I made a ladder template using pvc pipe to help me calculate the tube angle and lengths. I personally made this because I love the way it looks and it will help make it more comfortable to get up to my roof rack to strap down gear for when the family and I go camping. I do still step on my sliders/ door sills and tires, but I simply enjoy the convenience of the ladder in a lot of situations.
    I find it similar to tools that I never thought I would use, but then I have one and end up wondering how I ever got by without one.
    Some of you might be wondering is it even worth making one over just buying one. I’ll explain my thoughts on why “saving money” isn’t the only benefit. I enjoy the process. The exercise my mind gets when figuring angles and overall developing new skills. Because you never know when you will need them.

    Great job man looks great people always ask me why things like this cost so much, im going to refer them to this video ........ how does that "steel it" stuff work? Does it prevent rust for extended periods of time I've been looking a coating for exterior handrails

    • @RathaSochenda
      @RathaSochenda  Před 2 lety +2

      Steel-it has its place. It has some built in anti corrosion features that make it ideal in certain applications. For small projects I think it will hold up great but I still think powercoating is optimal.

      @@RathaSochenda ill give it a try ......I agree with you about powder coat but thhe problem im having is if there is any welding in the field it ruins the paint job and is almost impossible to match

    This is a great series! I am a newly graduated mechancial engineer about to drop $1700 on a gobi roof rack and rear ladder, but seeing you do all this has inspired me to try and build it myself. I have never done any welding but I know solidworks and have high spirits :) wish me luck!
