    Had no servants, yet they called Him Master. Had no degree, yet they called Him Teacher. Had no medicines, yet they called Him Healer. He had no army, yet kings feared Him. He won no military battles, yet He conquered the world. He did not live in a castle, yet they called Him Lord, He ruled no nations, yet they called Him King, He committed no crime, yet they crucified Him.

    Thank you for all of your reflections and videos, Fr. Josiah and the Patristic Nectar team. They are oh so edifying and a perfect way to have a good little birdie in your ear when there is so much distraction out there. Listening to one makes my whole day better. Simple Orthodox wisdom.

    This bit on learing where to start is very important and requires lots of insight . For years of struggling with lust ive found that its rooted and sturred up in my pride which i wasnt even considering. Praise be to the holy spirit for revealing this. I pray more of you who are struggling may have similar insights.

    I had given up sugary foods for lent. It was a very practical choice. I have lost weight and I feel better.
    But, my chief passion has been cannabis use. It's legal where I live so I have put it in the harmless vice category. I had avoided Father Spyridon's video on cannabis use because I already knew what he would say. Finally, I listened, and I even went and researched scientific studies to "fact check" him. Then it hit me that all of these efforts to justify myself were simply proof of the hold it had on me. I have quit, but I am only a few weeks in and it has been difficult at times.
    To the point of your video, I have noticed in fighting this primary demon in my life, my lesser passions have all but faded. Primarily that my lust and gluttony are quieted. So I feel there is something about "keeping" a demon that invites others into your life.
    I am protestant but I find myself seeking the wisdom of orthodoxy more and more. Praise God for you and Father Spyridon and the many others I could name.

      @@grizzly_8917 I have attended once with my oldest son. I could do it but I don't want to uproot my family. Also, I don't think God is finished with the protestant church yet. Something tells me that I shouldn't give up on it either. But I have nothing but gratitude for orthodoxy.

      Congratulations on your decision to be sober. Check out your local Narcotics Anonymous group and ask God to help you stay sober. IMO, the twelve step groups that are based on turning one’s will over to God are the Western Christian equivalent of monasteries, albeit outpatient monasteries. The glutton and adulterer Henry VIII destroyed the monasteries in Great Britain, a great tragedy.

    I have drawn a unique conclusion after many years of testing and carefully examining results: the secret to being successful is to stop sinning. It's difficult to do things, it is very easy to not do things. Just don't, stand aright, stand with fear, war with you passions begins with chosing to conduct ourselves in conjunction to Christ all the times.

      I am not a priest, I'm a poor excuse for a catechumen. But. It isn't NECESSARY but if you think you can benefit from one then make one, and as always if you have a priest ask him. Your spiritual father is in person not Trenham (unless it LITERALLY is Father Trenham.)

      I have anxiety. When I am sharing my sins, my anxiety goes through the roof. I need a list in order to have something to go on, otherwise I _will_ forget. I've done confession without a list, and I could tell after in my heart and conscience that it was not a good confession, because I realized I forgot this, and that. Or maybe that was my anxiety/scrupulosity talking... 😂

    • @vsevolodtokarev
      @vsevolodtokarev Před 2 měsíci +2

      Ask for forgiveness from God as soon as you recognize a sin, and then confess it before a priest when you get an opportunity. Same if you forget a sin and later remember it (by the treacherous works of the enemy, it often happens in line to receive Communion.) Keeping a list can be a helpful tool; for one thing, you will see if you keep falling into same sins.

      It depends on the passion. Not all are to be battled against in a same way. If you did not read "Ladder of Divine Ascent" by St. John Climacus, perhaps it could be wise place to search for the way of overcoming certain passion. For example, he writes as to how to battle anger: "The beginning of freedom from anger is silence of the lips when the heart is agitated; the middle is silence of the thoughts when there is a mere disturbance of soul; and the end is an imperturbable calm under the breath of unclean winds." PDF versions can be found online.

      I think it's pretty wise that fr. Josiah doesn't offer that specific guidance, and that rather you get that guidance from your spiritual father, someone who knows you and your situation.

      Usual advice is to do the works of a virtue opposite to that particular sin. For example, opposite to despondency is thanksgiving; forcing oneself to thank God than you least feel like it is detrimental to despondency.
