  • “It seems funny to say it, but long before there was an ‘art world,’ there was art in the world.” So begins the artist and writer Russell Connor’s meditative tour of public art in New York City. In this time of social distancing, virtually wander the streets and parks of early 1970s Manhattan, from Grand Army Plaza to Wall Street. Local artists feature alongside works by Pablo Picasso, Louise Nevelson, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, Alexander Calder, Romare Bearden and more.
As part of The Met’s 150th anniversary in 2020, each month we will release three to four films from the Museum’s extensive moving-image archive, which comprises over 1,500 films, both made and collected by the Museum, from the 1920s onward. This includes rarely seen artist profiles and documentaries, as well as process films about art-making techniques and behind-the-scenes footage of the Museum.

thanks for putting this on youtube. We need more info on the professional perspective on art, instead of what you see in a facebook comment section.

I haven't been to the "city in decades but this one took me right back. Thank you very much. I hate to ask how much remains? Use to hang out in the village mostly back then. Thanks for the flashback. :)

Love the early "public graphic expression" New York graffiti in it's early stages in 1973, it would evolve into a worldwide art phenomenon.
