Lyrics:
I don't know you
But I want you
All the more for that
Words fall through me
And always fool me
And I can't react
And games that never amount
To more than they're meant
Will play themselves out
Take this sinking boat and point it home
We've still got time
Raise your hopeful voice you have a choice
You'll make it now
Falling slowly, eyes that know me
And I can't go back
Moods that take me and erase me
And I'm painted black
You have suffered enough
And warred with yourself
It's time that you won

Right now, there are people all over the world who are just like you. They're either lonely, they're missing somebody, they're depressed, they're hurt, they're scared from the past, they're having personal issues no one knows about, they have secrets you wouldn't believe. They wish, they dream and they hope. And right now, they are sitting there reading these words, and I'm writing this for you so you don't feel alone anymore. Always remember, don't be depressed about the past, don't worry about the future, and just focus on today. If today's not so great don't worry! Tomorrow's a new chance. If you are reading this, be sure to share this around to make others feel better. Have a nice day. :)
Anywhere in the world but to read this it's breathtaking. Thank you for this, I hope your well.
What a gift you have given...to the world and me. Thank you, and have a nice day, too.
Thank you so much for these words. I needed to hear this 🥺🥺🥺
❤ to you sweet person.
Precious.
A while back I saw this movie with my guitarist. During this scene, I looked over at him and we were both crying. Two months later we would have our first kiss, and 5 years after that, we were engaged. Now in just two months I am going to walk down the aisle to this song. He doesn't know.
+Addie Nicole He doesnt know you are engaged? :^)
+Marshal Lee I think he doesn't know her song choice XD
Update: Married now. He cried! YESSSSS
I'm tearing and smiling just thinking about that. This is amazing i am very happy for you! :)
I wish you have the Most beautiful life! This song is gold.
I'm seriously crying now because I had memories of my simple and beautiful childhood with this movie full of love that doesn't care about clothes or looks just love and simplicity😔
Everyone who was part of this movie should be proud for the rest of their lives: an irish independent production with a small budget of a few thousand dollars conquered the world, and this song ended up winning an Oscar. That's absolutely incredible. It is still one of my favorite movies, it's raw, it's real.. I couldn't ask for anything more.
I don't think anyone could have said this better.
Tormtally agree. My niece is playing with him tonight in New York
Yes. And Yes. This song has been, and will most likely will be one of the most memorable piece of music of my life. I still remember the first time I heard it and why it became so special. It will always be special. :)
One of the best songs recorded
🥂🥂
if A Star Is Born got so much recognition, this should've had more
Yeah none of the others compare to Once!!
Agree. Sing Street too, that was a good movie
Yes yes yes
Shallow and this one give me same amount of cry everytime i hear both of them. even when i wasn't saw A Star Is Born even once, like i saw Once like 20 times... still crying... i'm a pussy :/
This movie won an Oscar. 😅
A movie that doesn't even name the main characters and doesn't end in the way most people would expect it to and also one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. Just a phenomenal movie.
And also, it doesn't have a budget as big as most movies
kittymusicgirl wait this a movie
What movie 🎥 is this called.
Shadow Beats I looked it up and the movie is called “once”.
A heartbreaking love story where he falls in love with a lady from another country, not knowing she is married with a small child. In real life, Glenn and Marketta were in love for a time, but are no longer together. The film was on a minuscule budget. but the story and characters had everything to lift it into the stratosphere. Unsurprisingly, this song won the Academy Award for Best Song.
My dad would play this on guitar when I was little and I’d sing with him with my little voice. Now I’m grown and leaving for college. I learned how to play this on guitar and sang for him. Then we played it together. All the memories of my childhood home came back.
I listen to this song and I just hear my little voice singing it.
I miss that time so much.
❤️❤️
My son used to play this song on his guitar. He would practice it over and over again until it was planted in my head. Now, several years later, he will be playing his guitar as a cast member, performing in the musical, "Once". What a beautiful love story! I can't wait to see the show.
6 years later. 2020 anyone?

Hi there.

My friend Ora showed me this and many other songs that I have come to cherish. She died a few years ago after we had drifted apart, and not a day goes by that I don’t think about her and all of the beautiful music she introduced me to. I miss you and I love you, Ora. ❤
one of the sweetest, painful and real movies ever.
I'd appreciate if you remind me of what the movie is called.
Nadir Grada the film is called 'once'
Once
Yes. Yes and also, yes.
I saw it live on broadway about a year ago and watched the actual movie recently and balled my eyes out both times.
This might be the most beautiful song ever written.
I love that you all were in love when you wrote and performed it, and it's also totally ok that you fell out of love. This was a moment in time that was somehow perfect. I love both of you all. :)
My mother died in 2010 to lung cancer It was sudden and swift.. This was a movie mom picked up off the 1$ rack at a dollar store. It's a movie we never even heard of. 13 years later this song pops in my head and reminds me of her, and this random movie "noones" ever heard of, is one of the biggest memories associated with a song i have of her. Thank you Once. Thank you for exsisting. I love you Lynn Elizabeth Coen. 1948-2010
So sorry 😢 my mom died of lung cancer in 2014 hugs 🤗
Condolences to you ..
If you ever get a chance listen to Song of Good Hope by Glen Hansard.
Awwwe! I reminder the same thing but I just want you want you are heard! Something broken bought we together! My sweet mother died of cancer also! Cancer is a turbulence thing to experience
Since this song means so much to you in regard to your late mother, perhaps it would interest you to know, in case you don't already, that "Falling Slowly" was awarded the Oscar that year for best original song from a motion picture. Much deserved.
before the Shallow, we had Falling Slowly
Omg. You are so very right! 10 years later!
I love A Star Is Born but this film really moves me until the point that i literally can't forget it.

Just saw Glen live last night. Can’t believe it’s been 20 years, I was shocked when he came out with a full on grey beard, than I realized I was in high school when this movie came out. Time
One of the most beautiful songs ever.
"Take this sinking boat and point it home we've still got time" one of the most beautiful lines I've ever heard sung...
"Raise your hopeful voice...you have a choice" Sink that melody.
That's two lines. You just didn't punctuate them.
@@ForwardEarth Oh whatever.

Also "....you have suffered enough and warred with yourself, its time that you won."
This movie is like a warm hug in a cold place
My dad would play this song on the guitar when I was three or four. The sound of the lyrics in his soft, deep voice over the strumming of his old guitar is one of my earliest memories. When I hear it, I'm right back there with him in the living room of our old house. Love you, dad ❤

In 2009, I was going through a difficult time in my life when I stumbled upon this movie on my screen. After watching it, I was inspired by the songs and felt like a different person with the courage to face my situation and figure out how to overcome it. As time passed, I stopped hearing the song, but recently came across it again and it brought back memories. It was like a refreshing moment that reminded me of how I overcame and faced that situation, making me stronger. Thanks, Glen and Marketa!
I watched this film when I was 17. I was heartbroken at that time. About three years later, in Athens I fell in love with a really beautiful and nice person. Honestly I’ve never met such a kind person in my life. My new life has begun with a new love.

I love this song so much!!!
I remember the first time watched this beautiful movie, I cried so hard in silence when the movie ended. I hold my breath in the last scene when the man tried to call the girls before he departed. I can not describe how this humble movie left such a deep feeling after it finished. Beautifully executed with memorable songs. I even recall that feeling again this time while I typing. Sigh..
Amen! I did, too!!!!
Vim pelo zerão cantando na Live tamo junto 🙃
I love that this film is so so independent but the passion of telling story with their music is huge, i cried a lot watching this and this one film enough for me to care for them characters. This is the best example of making a film with the intention of showing your love especially towards the art of music and how you want your story to be told to everybody, and i'm so so happy that they accomplished their dream.
Now I've been to Dublin I've come across this video again...I love this town, I promise I'll back❤
I love the absolute lack of sentimentalism in the movie. It completely avoids all the predictable themes and tropes - which makes both it, and this song, haunting.

When I forget how beautiful life is, I come back to this song and am reminded.
13 years and i am still falling in love with this song.
People come into our lives and ultimately serve a purpose whether we see it at that time or not, eventually, we do. "I paid the cost too late and now you're gone." Cried after watching this movie and this song is beyond moving!
“Falling Slowly” was won for Oscar’s Best Original Song since 2007.
The movie “Once” brought me here. This song is very moving. Glen Hansard is amazing singer/song writer. 👌🏻🙌🏻👏🏻

My wife and I had our first dance to this song in 2022. Beautiful song!
How lovely!🥰
For me this song represents a love too good to be true, or a love that no matter, can't happen at the end of the day. But it's still a type of love that's meant to happen.
I've been searching for this song for over two years. I could only remember a snippet of the melody and I had no idea where I saw it... I finally found it today! It's a Christmas miracle!!

This song makes me feel so many emotional things...
o zero é gigante.
A girl I knew in high school sang this at a school talent show, and I immediately fell in love with this song. I feel people always pull what they need to hear from music. "You've suffered enough and warred with yourself. It's time you won." I will always come back to music that moves me.🖤

This song literally never gets old and I’ve listened to it an ungodly amount of times
Couldn’t agree more. Over and over. As a man, I just love the innocent grace on Marketa’s gentle smiles. So tender……
when two people are perfect for each other and love each other but they can never get together...

actually that's what makes this movie more realistic, and that's why I love it so much, because I also can relate as well
The feeling of vulnerability is inevitable hearing this song :(

This song I my opinion is the greatest of all time. It has given me all I need. For me it was perfect.
It’s 2023 - I watched this movie with a girl I was seeing in 2008. It was early December. The following week I learnt to play this song on guitar (and then later Piano). I asked the girl to be my girlfriend Xmas Eve 08. We had a child together 2010. We got married 2011. This was our first dance song. ❤ A special song for us. 12 years later, it’s still “our song”

I agree as a singer somehow this song and movie really touched me.. it was sweetly magnificent
I met a woman very much like Marketa in 1979. Just as sweet, charming, and irresistable. I was luckier than Glen's character, because we had 17 years together, but then I got to feel the pain and yearning he felt at the end of the film. All this is why this song and movie haunt me so much. You don't fall in love with another woman after loving and being loved by one like Marketa or the love of my life. (Sigh)
May I ask what happened that caused your relationship to end?
I'm curious too
I am sorry to reply so late, but only now saw your questions. The answer is SO complex that it would take many pages to try. We each gave so much to the other that i believe she realized that in the long run, to accomplish what we were meant to it was best we do so separately. 23 years later we are still great friends living on opposite coasts. I will never give up the hope of loving and being loved again some day.

At first I was like: oh so they want to promote local films, eh, ok. After I watched it I was so emotional and overwhelmed. Lyrics are everything...people seem to forget...Love and Blessings to all....
Lyrics with melody, harmony, and feeling are everything.
I have grown up in the industry...yes..all have to come together...but if the lyrics aren't there, there isn't a story...I'm a writer myself...but all have their gifts...and coming together of all talents makes a true wonderful song...Love and God Bless
Sal G As a writer, singer and instrumentalist I must tell you that great music in itself can absolutely make a great story and fill the soul. Some of the greatest works ever created are instrumental pieces written by some of the greatest composers of all time. No one element is "everything." Beautiful is everything. And that can be a lyric, a chord progression, a melody, or even silence.
I agree...that's not what we were talking about...But I agree...Have a Blessed day!!!
I agree with Sal (also a songwriter, instrumentalist). This song is a perfect marriage of lyrics and music. It's been my favorite song, and the song I am most moved by since the first time I heard it performed.
There's something about Once, I can't explain it, but over the years I've watched it so many times that the initial sadness doesn't describe my feelings towards it anymore. That initial drama has mixed with layers of nostalgia and every time I watch this movie or hear its songs, it just hits me on a whole another level.
Amen
me too. This movie is everything.
True. I saw it for the first time last night. There is definitely something special about it.
Damn, it’s been years for me. Thanks, I’ll make a point to watch it again! Love this movie and this song!

Why this movie is so touching and strike a cord is because they are real musicians and they really fell in love during the production of the movie...... and we all sense it. It captured a singular moment in time, ONCE, a magical moment never to be repeated, ever again.
I first heard this when I watched this in my film class. For some reason, I broke down to tears, and I think I cried throughout the whole song.
