Also! Speaking of manipulative edits of comedy performances, let's talk about Joslyn Fox, the Black Horse of Season 6. Her standup comedy performance may not have been the best, but the queens said post-season that Joslyn's act got massively edited to make it look unfunny. Not only did they cut out most of the laughs, they also cut out parts of her jokes IN THE MIDDLE, thus making it look like her jokes did not make any sense.

I think the reason why the heckling worked on the Pearly Gates roast is because there’s a massive tradition of heckling in comedy shows here in the UK so it really works well, all the queens understood how to heckle and how to play off it given how prevalent it is in the Uk

yeap in america we dont have that lol there have been instances but its very very rare that a heckling in america is part of the joke.
Oh yeah. My school did a series of skits as an end-of-year show and someone in the audience started catcalling an actor playing Liz 2nd. Heckling starts in high school shows and then just doesn't stop. Personally, I think it's the drinking culture. It's much more normalised here to hit the bar before a show, so half the audience is drunk, which obviously leads to heckling.
@@UtterQueerNightmare the drinking is def a part of it but also it's just banter, culturally we tend to tease and insult eachother more as a joke and it's not taken seriously whereas in the US those comments would seem more insulting
Utica asking Ru to stand was the greatest moment in RuPaul's Roast Race. She deserved the win just for that.

i think the lack of the audience hindered the recent seasons' roasts (w the exception of druk 3), like the vibe of the room is so much more tense and awkward. i can't even imagine how it must be for the queens performing...
As someone whose played sold out venues (well next to one's, no one was at mine!) I can say it's focusing on the people who are there and playing with them.....but it's waaay harder than a nice warmed up crowd!
say what you will about farrah’s performance in the roast, but i say “let’s get this roast a cookin” on a daily basis and i thank her for that.
Utica's bomb is iconic, from the heckling to asking Ru to stand up. I love it!

there was also a roast in dr españa but i don't think the jokes translate really well with... well... translation. but i would say it's probably the roast that made me laugh the most out of all the franchises.

It was actually a pretty solid roast from what I remember. Sagittaria was the only one that completely bombed. Even Dovima had good jokes, her delivery was just bad.

Sagittaria had some good moments, Pupi was kinda meh, but Carmen and Killer slayed it.
@@andreacorbo2401 Yeah it was sad with Dovima because as far as jokes were concerned, she had a solid set and she started strong. Honestly should have just pinned that wig.
I always found the edit of alyssa & alaskas comedy routine in as2 suspicious, like they showed the audience HOWLING at every word alyssa said, 😳

I may be biased idk but I laughed more at Roxxxy than at Alyssa&Alaska's ruitine

An excellent example of what you discussed at the end was Angeria's roast, except the queens and the judges acknowledged it during the show. Angeria's jokes weren't that funny, but she had the supreme confidence to convince both the people on the set and the audience at home that it was hilarious. They could have easily edited it to make it unfunny and we would have believed it. Also I think the worst roasts are the ones where the people who bomb aren't bad enough to be entertaining. Like, Naomi's performance in AS4, Roxie in S5, and Trinity's in both her roasts were bombs that weren't entertaining. In contrast, Utica, Alyssa, and Valentina (both appearances) were almost anti-humor in how bad they were. And then there's the ones that are just... boring. Like Olivia Lux and Alexis, whose performances were complete snoozefests.

@@beatm6948 : It has one of the roughest starts, especially with how they edit it, but then the moment everyone watching her realize she's bombing and has no idea how badly she's bombing, and Loni heckles her, the tension in the room goes out and it becomes funnier as the queens and the judges laugh at her and not with her.
Angeria's "okay as hell" joke was hilarious tho.
I wish they did the miss congeniality roast again with different queens that were actually hard to make fun of like imagine trying to roast Ivy Winters
Well Ivy would be easy, they would just say “who is she again?” And “you fell off” like the queens told Ben Dela
It would be funny if they did the concept again but ivy wouldn’t be there, so they’d say she’s busy doing some wild shit like climbing Mt Everest since she’s good at everything

My biggest problem with some of the roasts is originality. Some of the girls just blatantly retell jokes from previous seasons (Kandy comes to mind but there are so many more) and it just completely kills my enjoyment of their set. Because of that season 13 is prob my least favorite. Even the girls who did "well" didn't have me on the floor or anything.
Edit: season 14 had an amazing roast imo, lots of jokes I havent heard before

I sorta agree with this - I didn't find Kandy's jokes in the S13 that hilarious because they were too similar to ones that we've heard before from previous queens. However, Bosco's jokes were really personalized twists on staples, and her versatility joke was both a tribute to Bianca's legendary set and her voicing her frustration and calling out the judges. It's amazing how she managed to mine her anger for comedy.

Kandy winning was so unfair because she just used good jokes whereas Rosé clearly wrote her own jokes
Seeing Matt Iseman on drag race made me fall in love with him. I already knew him, since he hosts American Ninja Warrior, but I didn’t really care about him. But seeing this stereotypical white jock dude being not only hilarious, but also a supportive and participating ally to the drag community, I was shocked and delighted!!
I'm not gonna lie but tbh I thought both symone and Olivia were actually worse than utica, like yea utica went a bit mean but those jokes woulda been winners given the right delivery, plus the sweatpants joke was absolutely amazing

The roast on SCDR was so good, but I’m also just in love with that whole episode because Ted from Schitt’s Creek is on it and they lipsync to Celine Dion’s iconic “it’s all coming back to me now”

Unpopular opinion: Valentina was hilarious in the Roast of Michelle Visage. The left hand joke lmao & I still say “Michelle Visage…. Jizz breath” sometimes even though it was crickets for Farrah.

I will insist that Utica was NOT bad. The whale joke was not really bad and I don't see how it is more offensive than any of the other fat jokes. And her joke to Ru "Could you please sit up?" was amazing. Symone and Olivia were both clearly worse than Utica.

The whale joke wasn't bad cuz it was offensive. It was bad because
1) it was the kind of joke you'd tell on the playground in 2nd grade and
2) it came out of nowhere and didn't flow at all

In my opinion, Pythia had one of the best jokes of that roast (we weren't laughing at you snatch game either) just after being interrupted by Brooke, so I don't think it throw her off that much. Anyways, the video was great and I don't think it would change cdr2 being last 😀

I think the roast is sorta easier than Snatch Game because they can actually prepare for it. Smart queens watch celebrity roasts and simply customize the jokes. Hell, I heard a Nikki Glaser joke about DeNiro that was something like "it's an honour to be sharing this stage with you, and by that I mean the last one of your life" and immediately thought "this would be perfect for Rupaul"

the roast from dr españa was so good if you know spanish. I was watching it with english subtitles just to know how they translated the jokes and it was really sad that some of them didn’t make any sense because like i said before the roast was so funny!

I would personally rank the UK roast a spot higher as Ella and Kitty KILLED it and even then, Krystal and Vanity didn’t do too badly themselves. I didn’t mind the length, just meant I got to laugh more

I think in regards to the heckling, there’s a difference that should be noted between American and British stand-up comedy culture. Heckled is much more common in the UK that is in the United States. So, queens definitely felt more comfortable heckling back and expecting to get heckles from the judges than the Americans

after watching the kennedy roast on all stars 7, i can definitely put that one as number one

I’ve been thinking about the best Roast. And I look at it how I rate the best snatch games. It has to have more than three people do good or at least it’s even better if majority of cast don’t bomb. I don’t think we’ve had a season with a majority cast that did really well in a roast.
Never saw secret celeb comedy roast episode wouldn’t count it as it’s a side show and the didn’t write their own jokes.
Honourable mention to UK S3 though because it was the first roast of the British franchise and I agree I liked that the cast got to come back and fill in as the audience and yeah only 4 of them but nobody bombed and as you said the heckling actually wasn’t awkward we laughed with them.
hope we get better. On a future Drag Race Season We had to wait until S7 for the best snatch game so anything is possible.

I worked with Matt Iseman and chatted w him about the celeb drag race episode, he said that he for sure wrote all his own jokes and as far as he could tell so did the other two contestants
They knew about the challenge ahead of filming so they had a while to prepare their content, though.

To me the DRUK3 roast felt lighthearted, the fact everyone was able to laugh at themselves and others was a nice change of pace from other roasts.
