@@icarusproject My point still remains, the EU acted with economic sanctions first, so it's unfair to say Russia cut off gas for "no reason" or whatever. You implied that Russia started economic war against the EU without mentioning that the EU sanctioned Russia first.
Russia intervened because Ukraine was killing Russians in the Donbass and refused to stop. Maybe it's a bad move but...
USA invades or attacks nations for much less noble reasons (Iraq, Vietnam, Syria, etc.) and for some reason no one sanctions them.

Russia sold cheap energy to Europe and we were happy to buy it. The USA were ready to export to Europe but could never compete with the cheap prices. I would say the USA succeeded in provoking Russia into a conflict in Ukraine that they have been pushing for since 2014. I'm just wondering how Russia were blackmailing Europe? Russia didn't pull the plug, we in Europe did and now we're lining the pockets of the US.

Production is stimulated by war investments, Russian society has been injected by lots of military money, and Russia's central bank is turning to debt in order to stay afloat. There's one important lesson that every nation should learn. DON'T BASE YOUR ENTIRE ECONOMY AROUND 1 OR 2 EXPORTS. When there's a needed resource that one country extorts others on, sooner or later someone is going to come up with a way around it. They'll either find a way to make it themselves, or find an alternative to it. At which point all of your leverage evaporates.

Lots of people don't seem to understand how these sanctions work. First of all they are NOT intended to affect ordinary Russians, so when you hear people on the street in Russia say that the sanctions haven't affected their lives, they are actually speaking the truth. Secondly, most of the sanctions are long-term which means that their effect will increase over time and thus be rather mild in the first couple of years. Was the Russian economy the size of the Italian one or the economy of the state of California? This is in a nominal account against the dollar. But if we calculate by Purchasing Power Parity that the Russian economy is almost like the German one. But, unlike Western economies, the Russian economy consists of REAL extractive and manufacturing industries. And not like in the west, where most of the production was brought to China and Southeast Asia, and they themselves live at the expense of the service sector. Here is a link to Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_GDP_ (PPP)
      ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/Список_стран_по_ВВП_(ППС)
And where is Italy and France on this list? So don't be surprised that the Russians were able to withstand the sanctions. Moreover, it helps Russia (not militarily) China and India. And also a lot of friendly countries that say to the West - "yes, yes, yes", but it is through them that the so-called "parallel import" goes to the Russian Federation!

Germans are some of the best in the world for that, see just their car industry where russia basically produces nothing. That’s why 80 million people creates an economy three times bigger than russias 140 million people. If you pull from russias economy the fact that most of it consists in making a hole in the ground and selling what comes up from it, that difference gets even greater. I don’t know if you are a paid troll to claim such things, but everyone else sees the same. And to do cooperation requires talking and understanding, not oppressing and fighting. If you feel momentarilly happy "winning" over your neighbour, you soon find yourself living next to a loser on the same Planet. If they are not happy because of your win, believe me, they will find a way to make you not happy soon as bad.

No one thought the Russian military could be stopped but when Ukrainians showed the will to resist the world took note of their courage! Ukraine remembered how Stalin rewarded the sacrifice of Ukraine's best and most highly decorated military by the 2 weeks all expense honor of money, food, feasting at the victory over Germany! On the train trip they were stopped to rest and were machined gun down by Russian solders, 40,000 leaders of Ukraine was murdered by Stalin's paranoia. Then 6 million were starved to death by Stalin stealing the food production from Ukraine. In modern day terms Russian invasion meant starving for Ukraine's population and the unwillingness to surrender on any terms! Ukraine cannot and will not surrender to Russian occupation! And now Russia is seen as a bully with its pants down around its knees with the only bailout is the threat of nuclear annihilation as its only trump card which no sees as a logical step toward world dominance! Putin is ruthless, not stupid, just greedy!

Putin is not an idiot. Labelling him as such would be a mistake.
He however fell into a very common trap for all dictators. He surrounded himself by gutless "Yes men" and got rid of anyone that disagreed with him. So he made the decision on bad information.
He was not that wrong though. Sure in hindsight it is a blunder of epic proportions, but see this through his eyes in 2022. His military has been modernized on paper and even most western strategists consider that it can conquer most of Eastern Europe before it is met with any resistance. By than he will just threaten with nuclear escalation and nobody will risk going to a hot war with a nuclear power over Eastern Europe. The west proved itself as weak, if they had any guts they would have levied heavy sanctions since the Crimea fiasco of 2014. Germany has even made itself more reliant on Russian gas. The "strong reply" of the west in the first week was to consider putting Nord stream on hold and mayyyybe cut off Russia from the system for electronic payments, while Macron grovelled for peace as Ukraine burned.
