      Yes, to a foreign lg learner such a comedian brings a relief.
      I once was walking with an American in a Polish town and there was a Polish band singing sth in English. I understood no word. I asked her what they were singing. She was surprised: How am I to understand Polish. 😂
      On another occasion, i was watching John Hus, a vid in English. There was a text I could not understand. I rewound it but could not get it. Once an American wanted to watch the film in my house. I stopped the tape at the moment when they said what I couldn't decode. I rewound it three times. She was perplexed as well. The part of the film remains a mystery to me 😜... And to a native speaker. What a relief! Greetings from Poland 🇵🇱

    "verschlucken" means "to choke" in German. That's where the Mennonites got it from. "Ich habe mich verschluckt" = "I choked (on something)"

      Not exactly, I stem from the same Mennonite background as him and it’s from the Low German/Plautdeitch dialect which is an old saxon language. We would say “ack ha me vershluckt”. Although we do share a few words with German, we still wouldn’t be able to understand each other. There was a time in Germany when they spoke both languages but ultimately settled on one and ruled the other one out which is Plautdeitch

    • @rjostusa4274
      @rjostusa4274 Před 2 lety

      Matt, you had me at Mennonite.
      FWIW, my dad grew up between two world wars, in central US.
      Church was in German, and Plattdeutsch was spoken at home. School was in English. Mom grew up in a different community and learned Plattdeutsch and English.
      Phrases in Plattdeutsch (autocorrect; I went with it) are funny, especially when translated word-for-word in English, because of sentence structure. “Throw, the lady out the window, her purse” - therefore, dry comedy is a natural force in the Mennonite community!
